PFAS textile

PFAS compliance and PFAS alternatives for textiles

Today, most people know that PFAS use must decrease, and that water-, grease- or dirt-repellent textiles may contain PFAS. Many also know about a proposed broad PFAS regulation in EU. But how do you test PFAS when there are thousands of substances, and can the same performance be achieved without them?

This time, the "Forum for Chemicals-Smart Trade" is organizing a webinar, partly in English, focusing on textile products where PFAS were previously commonly used to achieve dirt-, grease-, and water-repellency, but where the industry has worked—and in part is still working intensively—to phase out the use of PFAS. The more challenging textile applications have been personal protective equipment (PPE), where various standards and performance classes must be met, as well as dirt- and grease-repellency for everyday textile consumer goods. A proposal for broad PFAS regulation is under preparation at the EU level, and for trading companies it is important to be able to verify whether proposed requirements are met for products they purchase or for materials sourced for their own private labels.

At this webinar, you will hear about a study in which various alternatives to PFAS textile treatments have been tested to achieve water and oil repellency and to meet the requirements set for PPE (presented in English). We will also hear about analytical methods and working approaches that can be used to verify whether products meet the proposed requirements in the EU’s broad PFAS restriction proposal, as well as how other European legislation and OEKO‑TEX® certification set requirements for PFAS content. Forum for Chemicals‑Smart Trade is a seminar series for knowledge and experience exchange on chemical issues for trading companies. This webinar is organized in collaboration with the Chemicals Group and the Substitution Centre at RISE, and the Swedish Trade Federation. Over the years, the seminar series has addressed many different current topics and featured several interesting speakers., here you can access recordings and material from earler webbinars.
