Project LULUCF-policy in the Nordic Region RISE, together with SINTEF and LUKE, is carrying out a 12-month project for the Nordic Council of Ministers to develop the first Nordic overview of policy tools, measures and barriers affecting the implementation of the LULUCF Regulation and Nature Restoration Regulation. Project Strategic Sustainability Work In two projects, we have deepened our understanding of the organizational barriers and success factors that influence municipalities’ ability to manage cross‑sectoral transition work. The point of departure has been the everyday work of strategic coordinators, which takes place in an ‘organizational gap’ where structures are often lacking. Circular transition / Project Reuse Logic Effective market models for reuse, together with regulations that promote them, are crucial factors in the transition to a circular built environment sector – from planning through implementation to management, and, when needed, conversion or dismantling and reuse. Through qualitative studies, interviews, and a policy lab, tools are developed to create more integrated and sustainable urban development processes. Production and manufacturing / Project Waste2Place The extractive industry in Sweden currently has ~177 km2 of mining disturbed land. The aim of the Waste2Place project is to create long-term stable landforms to help to deliver mining-disturbed land back to nature and people through a geomorphic approach to waste rock management. RISE plays a role in facilitating equality and knowledge exchange. Additive manufacturing / Project Utredning, testning av reservdelar During crises and conflicts, it is vital that key societal functions remain operational. A lack of spare parts could cause disruptions that impact both food and water supplies. To explore whether additive manufacturing of spare parts could enhance resilience, the Swedish Food Agency has commissioned RISE. Wood technology / Project Moisture safety in CLT construction The aim was to increase knowledge of how the moisture safety of CLT structures is affected by precipitation during frame erection without weather protection. CLT elements and construction details, joints and connections, have been studied both in the field and in the lab to enable the industry to better determine the need for weather protection and Power production / Project WECoS System dynamics simulation modelling to facilitate/support decision-making practices made by municipalities and industry where WtE operations, the energy system, and high-level policy goals such as increased material reuse and net-zero targets are integrated Hydrogen / Project FlyH2UME In the FLYH2UME project, Umeå Municipality, Swedavia, RISE and Umeå Energi are jointly taking significant steps to prepare for the introduction of hydrogen at airports and to enable hydrogen flights by 2035. Resource-efficient cities / Project Hållbart Stockholm 2030 HS30 (Sustainable Stockholm 2030) gathers actors from the housing development sector in the Region of Stockholm, who work together to strongly reduce the ecological footprint of the industry and to take social sustainability even more seriously. Circular transition / Project The North star Together with Umeå Municipality, RISE has developes and tested new ways of working holistically with system innovation to increase the city's ability to adapt. The project will enable new ways of collaborating and working more jointly with the climate challenge, across the city's administrations and actors in the city. Social sustainability in urban development / Project Navigating autism in public transport This interdisciplinary research aims to offer new perspectives on how integrating the participation of the autism community in public transport planning processes can help initiate and improve the social participation of individuals with ASD in society. Maritime / Project MISTRA C2B2 C2B2 envisions a more sustainable, open and democratic, multi-sector and multi-actor blue economy and sustainable society. C2B2 aims to bring about transformative change through participatory governance supported by relevant and insightful data and knowledge by re-imagining the role of quintuple helix actors across the blue economy in Sweden. Plastics / Project Re-Membrane Many building materials for both infrastructure and house construction contain large amounts of plastic. In this project, we focus on membranes that will seal against water, and the project will investigate whether recycled plastic can be used in moisture and vapor barriers and in tunnel membranes with maintained quality. Energy storage / Project Air-Charge The project aims to develop assessments of the technical, operational, economic, and temporal feasibility of a future system demonstrator for high-power charging of electric aircraft in a real airport environment. Through roundtable discussions, analyses, and collaboration, the project identifies regulatory needs and contributes to policy development in Sweden and internationally. Textiles / Project RegioGreenTex In the framework of the European Green Deal, RegioGreenTex is a project promoting the collaboration in research and development for the textile industry to establish a systematic circular economy business model across the EU. Social sustainability in urban development / Project Citizen Dialogue Tool for Climate Action Malmö Stad, as part of their climate contract, wanted to engage citizens in a climate dialogue. We carried out research and developed a digital citizen dialogue tool to motivate citizens into actions towards more environmentally friendly behaviour, and to understand what support they require from the municipality to carry out these actions. Innovation management / Project LOFT In order for citizens to be offered well-designed and sustainable public services, municipalities ability to develop and transform is fundamental. LOFT is a partnership where municipal managements together develop new knowledge, test processes and systems, get access to analyses of the surrounding world and participate in research. Innovation management / Project DINO Public actors who work with operational and administrative tasks or with issues concerning regulations, do not always have an organization or structure that is suitable for innovation or transformation. To meet the demands placed on public actors, DINO aims to develop a model and structure for innovation work. Social sustainability in urban development / Project Collaboration support Universal design RISE has been given the task to follow up on Vinnova's program focused on universal design (a governmental assignment from 2017-2020). The aim of the program has been to ensure that organisational development, environments and services are universally designed, so that they become accessible and useful to all people no matter social affiliation. Urban development / Project SIGURD Urban planning and construction have great potential to contribute to sustainable development, but also to prevent it. New ways to measure and value investments, which provide a more comprehensive picture of the values that are created, are needed to lead the way to sustainable development. Data Science / Project Digitalisation index Municipalities and regions are facing a radical digital transformation to meet the present and future needs of welfare services and other community services. The digitization index aims to compare how far different parts of the country have come in their digitalisation maturity. Project People-tools-Process-Place (PTPP) Social sustainability is high on the agenda in Swedish urban development – and an important aspect of this area is accessibility. While there are laws and guidelines for physical accessibility, it’s not as clear how munucipalities and other actors can work on issues of social accessibility. This is the subject PTPP sets out to examine. Wood technology / Project Tall Timber Buildings - concept studies The project has demonstrated various ways to design and construct a multi-story building with a load-bearing timber structure (20+ stories) and has strengthened knowledge among the participating stakeholders. The results provide a foundation for future projects and contribute to the development of large-scale sustainable building solutions. RISE, Interactive in Piteå has developed an application for the organ that allows visitors to experience the instrument in new ways, regardless of age or musical background. Visitors can, for exam Social sustainability in urban development / Project Arkilog Arkilog (Architecture firms and citizen dialogue) has as its goal to generate knowledge on how architecture firms can work with citizen dialogue processes. Furthermore, a method will be developed which can be used by architecture firms in order to develop their own capability to work with such processes. Circular transition / Project RE:Source The resources of our planet must be used more effectively. RE:Source supports the development of innovations that can contribute to a smarter use of resources in both society and industry.
