SEBRA - SEnsor for Bicycle’s impRoved Awareness

SEBRA is a collaborative project between RISE, Aptiv and Liri that develops concept and technology solutions for a radar-based safety system for bicyclists. The goal is to improve awareness for bicyclists, improve coordination between motor vehicles within the smart traffic system and thereby improve traffic safety. With improved safety more people will feel safe and comfortable while biking which will improve green and safe city development.

Within SEBRA  we identify safety critical use-cases that involve bicyclists. Based on this, we develop a safety system with sensors and interfaces on bicycles that convey information to both cyclists and drivers of approaching vehicles. Finally, the system is evaluated in relevant traffic situations both in real traffic and in simulation environment such as AstaZero and Victalab.

The research questions under investigation are::

  • What safety issues can be addressed by a radar-based safety system mounted on bicycles?
  • What performance requirements (field-of-view, computational capacity, power consumption, etc.) should such a system fulfil?
  • How should the interaction with the bicyclists be designed to give a high level of safety and user experience?

SEBRA is a project associated with SAFER (https://www.saferresearch.com/projects/sebra)
