Analysis of narcotics and doping substances in wastewater

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Analysis of abuse substances in wastewater Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Measuring drugs or doping substances in wastewater makes it possible to estimate the amount of abuse substances over a certain period of time. It provides an overview of the abuse and trends in an area or workplace.

Purpose/Benefit:

Measurements of substances are carried out either upstream, for example in the sewage of workplaces and schools, or downstream in treatment plants, which can then provide an overview of usage in a municipality. Compared to, for example, interview questions and random samples at workplaces, these measurements offer a more objective assessment of entire populations and serve as a good replacement or complement to other interventions at a workplace or in an area.

Wastewater analysis of drugs and doping is a cost-effective method for assessing drug use on a large scale. It can also be used to identify differences between different areas in a city or even measure differences between departments and buildings within the same workplace.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

We measure the presence of drugs and/or doping agents in water samples using mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). In the drug panel, we analyze approximately 10 commonly occurring substances, and in the doping panel, about 16 different agents.

Our analysis methods have been validated through an intercalibration study within the SCORE research network, which is responsible for organizing annual surveys of drug use in Europe through analyses of municipal wastewater.

If you are unable to carry out the sampling yourselves, we are happy to assist with that service.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

We compile the results of the analyses in a report where we usually indicate levels per 1,000 inhabitants & 24 hours.

In addition to the analysis of controlled substances we can offer assistance with interpretation (consultation), presentation, calculations based on prescription of substances, and help you compile results into larger reports.

State of the art gas measurements and diagnostics in furnaces and reactors

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): State of the art gas measurements and diagnostics in furnaces Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

At RISE we are developing and implementing state of the art measurement and diagnostic techniques with tunable diode lasers to monitor and enhance the performance of thermochemical conversion processes. The techniques enable real-time, accurate measurements of difficult-to-quantify entities in hot and enclosed environments.

Purpose/Benefit:

Advanced optical measurement techniques, specifically Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) have developed and matured in recent years and can offer new and exciting alternatives for monitoring industrial processes.  The technology relies on the fact that chemical species of interest will absorb infrared light at certain known frequencies, while not absorbing any light at "off" frequencies, a simple concept that allows for robust measurements in difficult environments.  Residence time of TDLAS measurements is determined by the scanning rate of wavelength around the chemical species spectroscopic feature ( on and off the peak). Typically we work with 1-10 ms scanning intervals.  Equipment for TDLAS is inexpensive compared to competing technologies such as FTIR.

RISE at the forefront

RISE is focused on both developing the TDLAS technology for new uses as well as implementing TDLAS technologies within industry.  Current research focuses on using TDLAS to adjust fuel feedstock flows in real time to achieve better combustion efficiency.  Implementations at industry are focused on measurements of temperature, soot,   NO, CO2, H2O, CO, C2H2, CH4 as well as biomass flow and moisture content.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service): Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Our expert researchers and engineers are enthusiastic about this technology and are available to aid in a successful implementation or research initiative.

TDLAS implementations offer an extremely robust method for capturing data in difficult environments, using non-invasive light beams for the measurements.  Difficult environments such as sooty or gasified gas streams are no problem for TDLAS techniques, because the baseline measurement factors out the additional absorption.  Additionally, the use of lasers emitting exact frequencies means that calibration is never required and results are repeatable.

Normally, two optical ports (sight glasses) are needed on opposite sides of the furnace or reactor vessel, in order to emit and detect the laser beam.

RISE can supply laser measurement equipment as well as software for signal interpretation.  We offer the expertise needed for implementation, support, and development.

More information:

In TDLAS (see Figure 1) the wavelength of a narrowband laser is tuned across a specific absorption feature of the target species. The absorption of the laser intensity is measured with a photodetector and related to properties of targeted species (e.g. concentration, temperature (T), pressure (P)) using spectroscopic properties available from databases and the Beer–Lambert law. If the spectroscopic and gas properties (P, T) are known, the concentration can be evaluated from the measured absorption. For the temperature measurements, the laser is tuned over two or more lines of a species, the lines' (integrated or peak) absorbance ratio provides the temperature. It is important to note that the accurate detection of the parameters of the process (species concentration and T) is possible even at high level of laser light extinction due to particles, e.g. dust, soot, char and ash. The broadband reduction of the laser intensity can be used to evaluate particle concentrations. The lasers can easily be coupled to optical fibers, which constitutes a significant advantage for practical applications since the instrument can be located in a control room (or other safe places) with the light being transferred to the boiler in the fiber. The measured data is an integration (or average) over the entire absorption path and, therefore, provides information on the overall process condition and efficiency.

Currently, the monitoring and control of bio-based energy generation processes is carried out using feedback signals from conventional temperature measurements, flow rates and flue gas analysis. The main drawbacks of these methods are their poor temporal resolution, slow response time, invasiveness, etc. Due to these drawbacks, conventional methods are unfit for accurate and rapid detection of changes in process conditions that are needed for responsive control. In-situ diagnostics are measurements carried out directly in the reaction zone of the process, thereby reducing the response time of the feedback signal. Optical in-situ methods are non-invasive and operable for prolonged times in challenging environments. At present, TDLAS is one of the most promising and rapidly developing optical techniques for online in-situ diagnostics in thermochemical conversion systems. A comparison of TDLAS and conventional methods based on extractive sampling and invasive probing is given in Table 1 (Appendix).

Mutagenicity testing

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Mutagenicity testing Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Certain chemical compounds are mutagenic; they can alter DNA and lead to severe diseases like cancer. When working with novel substances, it is essential to assess their mutagenic potential. At RISE, we offer a simplified bacterial reverse mutation test (Ames test), which is a cost-effective initial screening assay to detect mutagenic compounds.

Purpose/Benefit:

The purpose of the Ames test is to identify whether a substance has mutagenic potential, i.e. the ability to cause genetic changes. The test is used as a first step in the risk assessment of chemical compounds. By using specific bacterial strains, it is possible to quickly and cost-effectively detect the ability of substances to induce mutations.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The bacterial reverse mutation test uses strains of Salmonella typhimurium and/or Escherichia coli to determine whether a compound is mutagenic. The strains carry specific point mutations that prevent them from synthetising an essential amino acid. As a result, they can only grow if that amino acid is present in the growth medium. The test detects reverse mutations that restore the bacteria’s ability to synthetise the amino acid. The revertant bacteria are detected by their ability to grow in medium lacking that amino acid.

At RISE, we offer a simplified version of the method described in the OECD Test Guideline No. 471 (Bacterial Reverse Mutation Test) of the OECD Guidelines for the Testing of Chemicals. This version uses two S. typhimurium strains: TA98, which carries a frameshift mutation, and TA100, which carries a base-pair substitution. Both mutations are in the histidine operon, making the strains unable to produce histidine.

The test involves exposing the strains to six concentrations of the test compound, both with and without a metabolic activator. The bacteria are then incubated in a histidine-free medium. A dose-dependent increase in the number of revertant colonies indicates that the compound is mutagenic under the test conditions.

Sealants have a wide range of uses; they must be able to be flexible and durable in varying environments.

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): The importance of testing flexible sealants and joint compounds Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Flexible sealants and joint sealants play a crucial role in building and construction projects. They ensure that joints are tight, protect against moisture ingress and maintain the durability of the building over time. The consequences of using a joint sealant with the wrong properties can be enormously costly.

Purpose/Benefit:

The importance of testing flexible sealants and joint compounds

By carrying out standardized tests, the performance of the sealant can be assessed and it can be ensured that it can withstand stresses such as temperature variations, mechanical loads and environmental influences.

Without tests, there is a risk of cracking, weakened adhesion and, in the worst case, leakage that can cause damage to the building. Common test methods include creep and elasticity tests as well as determination of adhesion and durability over time.

By following international standards, such as ISO 11600, it can be ensured that the sealant meets both functional and aesthetic requirements.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

With a wide range of equipment and several years of expertise, we can perform a variety of testing methods, all depending on the customer's needs, both standardized and specially developed methods for damage investigations.

Multiscale surface and interface analysis with FTIR

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Multiscale surface and interface analysis with FTIR Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

When assessing the chemical properties materials, information from a single location is rarely enough to understand a process. In Kista, RISE has a state-of-the-art equipment for performing spatially resolved vibrational spectroscopy on the macro-, micro-, and nanoscale along with cells for tracking time-resolved surface reactions.

Purpose/Benefit:

Materials and their surfaces exhibit behaviors and characteristics at multiple scales, with variations dependent on both time and location along the material. Corrosion products on a metal surface can form homogeneously across an entire surface or spread from initiation points. Degradation reactions in protective coatings can initiate at the surface and slowly progress into the coating, or failure can occur underneath the coating without any discernible changes at the surface. These are examples of complex behaviors that can easily be misunderstood or completely missed unless the correct type of analysis is performed. RISEs platform for multiscale surface and interface analysis aims to enable customers and partners to gain a deeper understanding of complex processes, and suggestions of how to use this knowledge in their day to day business.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Chemical analysis can be performed at different spatial scales:

  • Without spatial resolution. These methods include Attenuated total reflection (ATR), transmission (both solid and liquid samples), photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS), and reflection including infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS). In addition to high signal-to-noise ratio these methods can also be combined with time resolved analysis and follow reactions and in situ.
  • At the microscale. The FTIR microscope in Kista can perform hyperspectral imaging collecting up to 4096 spectra in parallel at a spatial resolution of up to a few µm.
  • At the nanoscale. With the possibility of performing IR spectroscopy or chemical mapping with a spatial resolution of just 10 nm.

In addition to infrared spectroscopy, complementary Scanning Kelvin probe (SKPFM) and topographical analysis is also available.

The instruments that are part of the platform are listed below:

  • Vertex 70 spectrometer with a wide array of accessories, and cells.
  • Hyperion 3000 with both MCT and spatially resolved FPA detectors
  • NanoIR3, including AFM-IR and topographical measurements with humidity control, and SKPFM

One appliction of FTIR-Focal plane array (FPA) spatially resolved spectroscopic imaging is to compare levels of degradation along the cross section of a coating. The image to the left show that before being exposed to damaging radiation, the coating is chemically homogenious. After exposure the relative levels of degradation close to the surface is high and gradually decreases further as we go further into the bulk.

AFM-IR measurements can for example be used to both find and determine the location and size of different chemical species with high spatial resolution. The image to the right illustrates the formation of sulphur-containing corrosion products have formed on a metal surface after it was exposed to an aggressive atmosphere.
