Biofilm on surfaces, filters and in pipes can, among other things, give rise to production stop and production defects.

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Biofilm on surfaces - a problem in many industries Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Biofilm formation is the microorganisms' way of protecting themselves against factors in the environment such as chemicals, antibiotics, heat etc. Biofilm therefore creates problems in many industries and environments, for example in water management in various contexts, in healthcare, in the paper industry and not least in the food industry.

Purpose/Benefit:

Research has shown that when a biofilm has formed, the microorganisms can be up to a thousand times less sensitive to, for example, antibiotics than when they live freely in a solution. Correspondingly, resistance to cleaning and disinfection chemicals, biocides, heat, but also to drying out increases.

The microorganisms that can form biofilm can in some cases cause disease if they are found on surfaces in the food industry ex. Listeria, in healthcare ex. Enterococci or in shower water in the form of Legionella. In the paper and other process industries, the biofilm can manifest itself, for example, in the form of product defects or clogged filters.

RISE can, with various methods, help prevent biofilm formation, for example by choosing the right type of material, means or design of equipment. We can also offer risk assessment in situations where risks may arise due to biofilm formation e.g. with stagnant water and the possibility of growth and spread of Legionella.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

We have methodology for testing and evaluation at different scales, from lab scale to large-scale in the form of smaller reactors and larger rigs, where you can circulate water to simulate biofilm construction and removal of biofilm. Combinations of different materials, chemicals, cleaning regimes and biofilm types can be evaluated.

At our microbiological lab, which is BSL 2 classified, we can analyze biofilm with traditional culture techniques, flow cytometry and MBEC to look at levels of microorganisms as well as with molecular techniques to get an identification of the microorganisms that occur.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Examples of deliveries to customers:

  • Basis for being able to choose suitable materials that counteract biofilm construction
  • Help and advice to be able to design in a way that makes it difficult to build biofilms
  • Evaluation of the effectiveness of chemicals in counteracting and removing biofilm
  • Risk assessment and preventive measures with a focus on Legionella in water systems

Water Management in Papermaking

Water Management in Papermaking
Water

Good water management allows papermakers to mitigate the negative impacts of contaminant accumulation in process water streams. This can result in an improvement of product quality and process stability along with reduced costs, energy consumption, and water consumption.

Water quality impacts process performance

The increasing need for papermakers to reduce water use leads to the increase of dissolved substances and colloidal material in paper machine water loops. Such contaminants impact machine performance through their negative impact on the process, particularly wet end chemistry. This impact can lead to increased costs for papermakers tied to poor process stability, high chemical consumption, and poor drainage which subsequently results in increased energy requirements in drying. Water contaminants also increase risks tied to bacterial deposits and slimes in the process.

A focus on water management

At RISE we work directly with industry to solve problems related to water management. We aim to reduce direct and indirect costs, impacts and risks related to water with the ultimate goal to improve productivity in papermaking. RISE can help papermakers with:

  • Identification of water re-use possibilities and improvement of water loop separation
  • Identification of key contaminants in the process, their source, and both the cost and risks they pose to the process
  • Evaluation of alternatives to control contaminant buildup in processes including lab and pilot evaluation, techno-economical assessment and feasibility studies.
  • Identification of microbiological impacts and techniques to minimise biological impact on the process.
  • Evaluation of water cleaning technologies to act as kidneys for decontamination of water loops and advanced combinations of treatment technologies.
  • Assessment of recourse recovery opportunities from water streams.

Separation of kraft and soda lignin

Separation of kraft and soda lignin
Separation lignin

RISE has a team of experts working with different processes for separation of lignin from various kraft and soda liquors. The focus of the work is on optimisation of the processes and process parameters for different liquors, but also to modify the properties of the lignin products in order to suit the downstream application.

RISE have been working with processes for separation of lignin for a long time. This work has for example resulted in the development of the LignoBoost process in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology. The LignoBoost process IPR is nowadays owned by Valmet who have commercialised it with support from RISE. RISE has equipments in both lab, pilot and demo scale for running the LignoBoost process. RISE has also a well-equipped analysis lab with a lot of tools to characterise lignin products and their properties to support the development of separation processes. However, RISE is not only working with the LignoBoost process, but also other processes and modifications thereof in order to fit the process to the feedstock (liquor from pulping of hardwood, softwood or agriculture residues) and to the pulping technology (kraft or soda). Furthermore, we do also adjust the separation method dependent on the application of the lignin product, e.g. would it be more beneficial with a more condensed or reactive lignin, more or less impurities like polysaccharides and metals, etc. If you are unsure which quality will fit your product best, we can of course guide you. Custom made solutions are our expertise!
