Numerical Simulations for Fibre based products

Numerical Simulations
Simulation of trays

Numerical simulation - such as Finite Element Methods (FEM) - as a tool is useful to understand and predict material, product, and process performance.

While numerical simulations by themselves cannot replace testing, the typical use cases are where testing is expensive owing to either time constraints or the value of the product involved. Simulations can help in reducing the extent of testing necessary either by informing the design process and reducing the iterations necessary or by helping in mapping the effect of various material and process parameters to the product performance.

Within the area of fibre-based materials (like paperboard, liners, tissue paper etc.), numerical simulations are useful to gain better understanding of the effect of material and geometric parameters on performance of products like liquid packaging boards, corrugated boxes, trays.

In addition, the simulation of converting processes like creasing, folding, 3D forming, embossing aids in understanding the effect of geometry, tooling parameters etc. on the product performance.

Characterisation, verification, and validation

Base material characterisation and validation is an important ingredient of numerical simulations. Material data that is necessary for numerical simulations is often difficult to obtain and has a definitive impact on simulations.

We are uniquely placed in this regard. Together with our Mechanics & Transport Testing labs, we have the ability to characterise the base material through a wide array of mechanical tests, advanced characterisation methods and run both quasi-static and dynamic mechanical tests on a range of products. Thus, we are in a position to offer solutions that add value by combining numerical simulations with material characterisation and product testing.

We offer numerical simulations in the following areas:

  • Fibre-based products like carton and corrugated boxes, 3D formed products like trays, bottles, packaging, converting processes like creasing & folding of carton boards, embossing of tissue paper etc.
  • Simulation of products made of bio-composites, rubber etc.

Studies of Wood and Wood Handling

Studies of Wood and Wood Handling
Wood handling

Studying wood can provide insights that are crucial to answering several important questions in the pulp and paper industry, one of which is whether it is possible to introduce new wood species into production while maintaining the desired properties of the resulting pulp.

At RISE, we conduct extensive investigations of different wood materials to evaluate their suitability for pulp production. Our analyses focus on the chemical composition and structural quality of the wood, allowing us to assess its economic viability in relation to production costs and the resulting pulp quality.

We also investigate the processability of the wood, including its chippability and ease of handling during mechanical processing. These factors are evaluated in terms of their impact on the efficiency of operations and the quality of the final pulp product. An important part of our research involves characterising the mechanical and physical properties of the resulting pulp and paper, such as tensile strength and bulk density.

Our drip-feed chipper is designed to produce high-quality wood chips with precisely controlled dimensions. Before being used in laboratory experiments, the chips undergo careful characterisation, including assessments of size distribution, geometric shape, moisture content and chemical composition.

RISE has developed a standardised and well-established protocol that enables objective and comparable evaluations of different wood handling systems. By following this protocol, we can systematically analyse and compare performance, energy efficiency and functionality between different solutions. This provides manufacturers, suppliers and users with a reliable basis for decision-making when choosing or further developing wood handling technologies.

Efficient Evaluation of Antifoam Solutions in the Process Industry

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Efficient Evaluation of Antifoam Solutions in the Process Industry Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

By utilizing the customer's filtrate or other process fluids, we can efficiently evaluate various antifoam solutions without the need for extensive and costly full-scale trials.

Purpose/Benefit:

By providing customized tests, we can assess how well different antifoam solutions perform in the customer's specific process environment without the need for extensive investments or disruption to the existing production process.

These evaluations allow us to identify and recommend the most effective antifoam solutions that meet the customer's needs and process requirements. By conducting tests using the customer's own fluids, we can ensure that the results are relevant and applicable to their operations.

By avoiding the need for full-scale trials, we can save both time and resources for our customers while guaranteeing that they receive high-quality and cost-effective antifoam solutions. This empowers our customers to make informed decisions about antifoaming in their production processes and ensures smooth and efficient operations.

In the process industry, both process chemistry and raw materials vary, meaning that an antifoam that is effective in one system may be ineffective in another. Therefore, each system requires individual optimization based on its specific conditions and requirements.

For paper mills and other industries, it is common to have an established supplier of antifoam, and changing suppliers often involves extensive analysis and testing. Reasons for considering a change may vary, such as the possibility of a more efficient or cost-effective product, issues with foam that the current product cannot handle, or the current product requiring excessively high and costly dosage levels.

By analyzing the current process filtrates, we can determine the causes of complex foaming issues and identify suitable solutions. It is also possible to evaluate different antifoams and study the behavior of silicone in antifoams. It is important that the silicone does not adhere or clump with resins and other contaminants, which can lead to production issues in both paper mills and printing facilities. Having a thorough understanding of these processes is crucial to ensuring smooth and efficient operations.

Lab-scale rod coating for quick screening trials

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Lab-scale rod coating for quick screening trials Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Traditionally, rod coating has been used to test surface adhesives and coatings for spreads on graphic paper. But the method has also proven to be valuable for testing coating of new chemical solutions. The method has therefore had a renaissance and is now used in several new application experiments, including nanocellulose.

Purpose/Benefit:

The effects of coating with viscose, nanocellulose and lye on different test surfaces are some examples of coating solutions that can be used. These solutions are applied to the sample using a rod. Different rods are available, ranging from smooth to grooved for different amounts of toppings and solutions. After coating, the sample is dried with, for example, IR dryer, but several drying methods are available. More layers can be applied or the sample can be tested directly in lab.

Various surface adhesives and creams can be boiled and prepared in jet boilers. Samples in A4 format are usually used for coating, but even smaller formats can be coated. Stick coating is a fast method that does not require large amounts of material. After coating, there are also many different options for testing the coated surface, such as contact angle, surface roughness and friction. A good complement to other analyzes of the surface are Cobb 60 and Cobb Unger. The strength properties of the test as well as air permeability and air permeability are examples of other interesting tests that can be performed.
