Indoor environment in buildings

Indoor environment
Indoor environment

Today we spend 90% of our time indoors. How we experience our indoor environment in buildings is therefore very important for our well-being. RISE works with investigations of indoor environment problems in the field, preventive work in the construction phase as moisture experts and with research and education in the field of indoor environment.

A good indoor environment is a basic requirement for a building whose purpose is to protect people from external influences and create a good and healthy environment to live and work in. In order to have a good indoor environment, you need to take into account, among other things, air quality, moisture security, air tightness, thermal comfort, radon presence and sound acoustics and light environment. RISE conducts research and education in each sub-area and conducts investigations in fields in existing buildings and also preventative measures early in the construction process.

Indoor environmental problems - when someone associates health problems or discomfort with staying in a room - is a recurring problem in buildings and can have a variety of causes, building-related as well as mental. Regardless, indoor environment problems cause extensive damage, both personal and financial. Building related problems can be moisture, material emissions, sound, thermal comfort and so on.

To prevent indoor environment problems, quality assurance through P-labeling of the indoor environment throughout the building and the construction process is a common assignment that RISE performs. This includes quality assurance of the entire process - from planning to management. One of the areas included in preventive measures is air tightness, air leak detection and thermography in the climate shell, in which RISE also educates diplomatic air tightness testers.

RISE is also working to investigate indoor environment problems in existing buildings. RISE has expertise in all areas affected by investigations of building-related problems, such as microbiological, chemical and allergen analyzes.

Fire testing of cables according to EN 60332-1-2

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Fire testing of cables according to EN 60332-1-2 Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Tests on electric and optical fibre cables under fire conditions – Part 1-2: Test for vertical flame propagation for a single insulated wire or cable – Procedure for 1 kW pre-mixed flame.

Purpose/Benefit:

Fire test according to EN 60332-1-2 evaluates a cable's fire properties in terms of flame spread. The main area of application is to create a basis for classification in fire classes B1ca, B2ca, Cca, Dca and Eca according to the European system for Euro classes.

In the EU, construction products must be CE marked according to the Construction Products Regulation (CPR).
Cables covered by the product standard EN 50575 are affected by CPR, which is why CE marking is a requirement for the cable to be sold within the EU.
The basis for the CE marking is fire classification according to EN 13501-6. This includes fire testing according to method EN 60332-1-2. The method forms the basis for the fire classes B1ca, B2ca, Cca, Dca and Eca .

In addition to the benefits of CE marking, the method also provides important information about the cable's fire properties and is therefore often used in product development contexts and process optimization.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The specimen shall be straightened and secured in two horizontal supports with an appropriate size of copper wire in a vertical position. A burner shall be positioned so that the inner blue cone of the flame hits the surface of the specimen at a distance of (475 ± 5) mm from the lower edge of the upper horizontal support, while the burner is at an angle of 45 ° ± 2 ° to the vertical axis of the specimen. Flame application time depends on cable diameter.

  • Power cables - insulated conductors and cables for use in e.g. electricity supply.
  • Control and communication cables - wires, symmetrical cables and coaxial cables with metal conductors for use in eg. telecommunications, data transmission, radio frequency, video communication and signal and control equipment.
  • Optical fiber cables - for us in e.g. in telecommunications, data transmission, radio frequency, video communication and signal and control Equipment.
Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The fire test results are reported in an English test report.

RISE holds both accreditation and notification regarding this test method why the test report is valid as a part of the CE marking documentation.

It is interesting and instructive to watch fire testing and therefore we welcome our clients to visit us at the test occasions.

Emission measurement from construction products, paint & glue and furnish

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Emission measurement from construction products, paint and furnish Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

It is important that building materials and other products that we have in an indoor environment do not emit harmful substances into the air. With an emission measurement, we analyze which volatile substances (VOC) a material emits in to the air. We can determine the total content of VOC (TVOC) and individual substances such as formaldehyde.

Purpose/Benefit:

In our emission chambers, we can test whether your material meets various emission requirements set by, among others Byggvarubedömningen, CARB/EPA, IKEA, BSL (F****), RTS (M1), Svanen, BREEAM och LEED.

We have many years of experience in emission measurements and we can help with what needs to be tested for your specific needs.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

An emission measurement means that the test material is placed in an emission chamber with a constant temperature, humidity and air circulation. The air in the chamber is tested a number of days after the start of the test, usually 28 days.

There are several different standardized methods we can perform:

  • EN 16516 Construction products – Assessment of release of dangerous substances - Determination of emissions into indoor air

ISO 16000-series:

  • ISO 16000-9 Indoor air - Part 9: Determination of the emission of volatile organic compounds from building products and furnishing — Emission test chamber method
  • ISO 16000-10 Indoor air - Part 10: Determination of the emission of volatile organic compounds from building products and furnishing — Emission test cell method
  • ISO 16000-3 Indoor air Part 3: Determination of formaldehyde and other carbonyl compounds in indoor air and test chamber air – Active sampling method

Other methods:

  • EN 717-1 Wood based panels – Determination of formaldehyde release – Part 1: Formaldehyde emission by chamber method

  • ISO 12460-3 Wood based panels – Determination of formaldehyde release – Part 3: Gas analysis method

  • Standard Method for the Testing and Evaluation of Volatile Organic Chemical Emissions from Indoor Sources using Environmental Chambers, by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH)

  • IOS-MAT-0003 Formaldehyde requirements of wood, wood-based and wood-like natural materials and products

  • IOS-MAT-0181 Formaldehyde requirements of wood-based materials comprised in the German Prohibition of Chemicals Ordinance

We are an approved third-party certifier for the control of formaldehyde emission from wood-based boards in accordance with the EPA TSCA Title VI and CARB ATCM 93120 regulations. Emission methods used are:

  • ASTM E1333 Standard Test Method for Determining Formaldehyde Concentrations in Air and Emission Rates from Wood Products Using a Large Chamber
  • ASTM D6007 Standard Test Method for Determining Formaldehyde Concentration in Air from Wood Products Using a Small-Scale Chamber.

We perform F****-testning and certification according to Japanese BSL (Building Standard Law) of formaldehyde emission from building products. We are approved by MLIT (Ministry of Land, Infrastucture and Transport). Emission methods used are Japanese Industrial Standards and Agricultural Standards, for example:

  • JIS A 1460 Building boards Determination of formaldehyde emission – Desiccator method

Fire testing according to ISO 5660-1

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Fire testing according to ISO 5660-1 Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

ISO 5660-1 Reaction-to-fire tests - Heat release, smoke production and mass loss rate.

Part 1: Heat release rate (Cone calorimeter method) and smoke production rate (dynamic measurement).

Purpose/Benefit:

The test method is used for fire technical modelling. The data from the test results can be used for modelling bigger fires. A fire sequence in the ISO 9705 – Room Corner Test and EN 13823 – SBI can for example be predicted using the ISO 5660 method.

The method is also widely used in testing at the product development stage. One can compare a variety of measurement data and thus find the variant of the product that seems most promising to proceed with in further tests.

The test method is also used for third party verification (production control).

The method is cost effective in product development and production control.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

When testing a product according to ISO 5660, a sample with the dimension 100 mm x 100 mm is subjected to a specific irradiance level. The surface of the sample is heated and starts to emit pyrolysis gases that ignite by a spark igniter. The emitted gases are collected in a hood and transported away through a ventilation system. The heat release is measured using the data on measured oxygen concentration in the emitted smoke. The smoke production is measured continually throughout the test with a laser system.

The following parameters are measured in the method: Ignition properties, Heat release rate (kW/m2), total heat release (MJ/m2), mass loss (g/s), effective net heat of combustion (MJ/kg) and smoke production rate (m2/s). Levels of toxic gases can also be measured with FTIR analysis.

We offer non-accredited testing with reduced oxygen atmospheres according to ISO/TS 5660-5 .
