EN 61034-2 Measurement of smoke density of electric cables burning under defined conditions - Part 2: Test procedure and

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): EN 61034-2 Smoke density of electric cables burning Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

EN 61034-2 is a fire test method that generates data that is used to evaluate formed smoke density as cables burn. Test results forms a part of the basis for CE marking according to the CPR Construction Product Regulation.

Purpose/Benefit:

In the product development context, it is important at an early stage to investigate the extent to which cables contribute to smoke development in the event of fire. Fire testing according to EN 61034-2 generates data used to determine smoke density when cables are burned.

Requirements according to the Building Products Regulation (CPR) mean that cables must be CE marked and fire classified according to the Euroclass in order to be sold as building products. In some applications, additional classification of smoke density is required. Data from tests according to EN 61034-2 form the basis for CE marking with supplementary classification s1a or s1b.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The cable to be tested is mounted in 1-meter lengths on a frame placed above a vessel containing a mixture of ethanol, methanol and water. The mixture is ignited and allowed to burn until consumed, about 40 minutes. During the test period, the smoke density formation is measured.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The fire test results are summarized in English in a test report delivered in digital format.

RISE holds both accreditation and notification regarding this test method why the test report is valid as a part of the CE marking documentation.

EN 13501 - European fire classification of construction products

European fire classification
Room Corner Test

Europe's fire classification system for construction products is the basis for CE marking. The system is called 'the Euroclass system' (EN 13501).

What is fire classification of construction products?

Fire classification of construction products involves test and classification of construction products in a harmonised European system. This system is adopted by all EU Member States. Substantially the fire classification is divided into two areas, the reaction to fire and the resistance to fire.

How does the reaction to fire classification work for different product groups in the Euroclass system?

The Euroclass system for construction products mainly concerns wall linings, insulation materials, floor coverings, pipe insulation and cables. These product groups are treated similarly.

The reaction to fire classification of wall linings, floor coverings and pipe insulation

The chosen class limits for wall linings, pipe insulation and cables are almost entirely based on Swedish work and contributions to the harmonisation. Wall linings are classified using an index called FIGRA, developed at RISE. More about FIGRA and the technical background of the Euroclass system can be found in "The Development of a European Fire Classification System for Building Products, Test Methods and Mathematical Modelling".

The reaction to fire classification is divided into seven main classes

There are seven main classes defined in EN 13501. For wall linings, floor coverings and pipe insulation, they are called A1, A2, B, C, D, E and F. For cables they are called A1, B1, B2, C, D, E and F.

Common class designations for wall linings, flooring, pipe insulation and cables

Examples of common class designations, including smoke and burning drops, for wall linings, floor coverings, pipe insulation and cables are as follows:

A1 (non-combustible material)
A2-s1,d0
B-s1,d0
C-s2,d0
D-s2,d0
A1fl (non-combustible material for floor covering)
Cfl-s1
Dfl-s1
BL-s1,d0 (pipe insulation)
B1CA-s1,d0,a1 (cables)

The criteria for the Euroclasses can be found in the classification standards: EN 13501-1 for wall linings, pipe insulation and floor coverings, and EN 13501-6 for cables.

Fire classification of roof coverings

External fire behaviour of roofs is part of the Euroclass system. There are four different test methods for fire classification, which gives a total of thirteen different classes.

  • In Sweden and the Nordic countries, the classes BROOF(t2) and FROOF (t2) are used.
  • A roof with the class BROOF(t2) class has met the EN 13501-5 requirements together with a specific substrate.
  • A roof classified FROOF(t2) has either not been tested or did not pass the fire behaviour requirements.

The criteria for the Euroclasses can be found in the classification standard, EN 13501-5.

The fire resistance classification of construction products

When testing the fire resistance of a product or a construction, the properties are determined when exposed to a certain temperature effect, normally corresponding to a room fire. Fire resistance is one or more properties of the assembled structure/product and thus not a property of the constituent materials. Fire classification of structures regarding fire resistance is done according to a system where the property is labelled with a letter – e.g. R, E or I – and an index indicating the time that this property is maintained, e.g. REI60. Doors are also classified concerning smoke leakage, property Sa or S200.

Examples of classifications:

  • EI60 (non-loadbearing wall/ceiling with fire separation function in 60 minutes)
  • REI60 (load-bearing wall/floor/roof with fire separation function in 90 minutes)
  • RE90 (load-bearing wall/floor/roof with fire separation function in 90 minutes)

The criteria for the classes can be found in the classification standard EN 13501-2.

Construction Products Regulation (CPR)

Testing is carried out with regard to harmonised European testing standards, which were developed by the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN). A fire-classified construction product can be CE-marked if the other properties, according to the European Commission's Construction Products Regulation, have also been verified. This is governed by several so-called harmonised product standards issued by the European standardisation CEN and referred to by the EU in relation to the Construction Products Regulation.

Replaced the Construction Products Directive (CPD)

The Construction Products Regulation (CPR) (305/2011) 2011 has replaced the previous Construction Products Directive (CPD) (89/106/EEC) from 1989 and is thus mandatory for all Member States. The previous directive was introduced by the European Commission to facilitate free trade in construction products within the EU.

Requirements of the Construction Products Regulation

The Regulation contains six essential requirements for the building itself. One of these requirements is safety in case of fire. Therefore, construction products have to be fire-classified based on the same standards across the EU. A Member State requiring a certain level of fire safety can then identify the desired fire property using the common fire classes.

Specifications in the Construction Products Regulation

The Construction Products Regulation can only work if there are several specifications. In the field of fire, the definition of fire classes, harmonised test methods and declaration of conformity are important specifications. The European fire classes and the rules for declaration of conformity are published by the European Commission. Test standards and product standards are published by CEN. Product standards become harmonised only when approved by the Commission.

ConeTools - Development tool for Euroclasses according to EN 13501-1

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): ConeTools - Development tool for Euroclasses according to EN 13501-1 Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

ConeTools - Development tool for predicting test results according to SBI (Single Burning Item) and RCT (Room Corner Test).

Purpose/Benefit:

ConeTools is one of several flame spread models that RISE has developed. ConeTools allows you to predict the Euroclass for SBI and/or RCT by means of cone calorimeters test (ISO 5660-1) results at one heat flux level.

The advantages of testing according to ISO 5660-1 is less material consumption and that the test method is more cost effective than testing according to SBI or RCT. For these reasons, ConeTools is an excellent tool for the development and production control of materials and products.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

When testing a product according to ISO 5660-1, a sample with the dimension 100 mm x 100 mm is subjected to a specific irradiance level. The surface of the sample is heated and starts to emit pyrolysis gases that ignite by a spark igniter. The emitted gases are collected in a hood and transported away through a ventilation system. The heat release is measured using the data on measured oxygen concentration in the emitted smoke. The smoke production is measured continually throughout the test with a laser system.

The following parameters are measured in the method: Ignition properties, Heat release rate (kW/m2), total heat release (MJ/m2), mass loss (g/s), effective net heat of combustion (MJ/kg) and smoke production rate (m2/s). Levels of toxic gases can also be measured with FTIR analysis.

Fire resistance testing

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Fire resistance testing Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

RISE offers accredited testing, inspection and certification for a vast variety of fire resistant products at our sites in Borås, Sweden and Trondheim, Norway.

Purpose/Benefit:

In the event of a fire, the fire resistance time of the constructions is the most critical component and has a direct influence on the safety. Fire-resistant products should allow the construction to retain their minimum functions during the time required to evacuate.

Fire resistance testing can be performed for a variety of constructions such as walls and glazed structures, tile floors and ceilings, beams, pillars, doors, gates, shutters and gates, ceilings, ducts, cable glands and fire dampers. Testing can be done with either vertical or horizontal load.

To prevent the spread of fire within the built environment and maintain means of escape, building legislation across the world often requires that separating elements, such as partitions, doors and glazed screens, offer known resistance to fire exposure.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

RISE has two specialist fire resistance and product development test laboratories.

We offer ISO/IEC 17025 accredited fire tests to a variety of SP, national, Nordtest (NT FIRE), European (EN) and International standards (ISO, IMO). As a Notified Body of the European Commission, RISE can deliver fire testing services necessary for product conformity assessment to harmonized Product Standards and European Assessment Documents (EAD) under the EU Construction Products Directive/Regulation.

We also provide ad-hoc fire tests for the purposes of product development. If you would like to know more, feel free to contact us!

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

IMO 2010 FTPC Part 5 - Fire testing of materials for ships

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): IMO 2010 FTPC Part 5 - Fire testing of materials for ships Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

IMO 2010 FTP Code Part 5 - Test for Surface flammability (test for Surface materials and primary deck coverings)

Purpose/Benefit:

IMO 2010 FTP Code Part 5 evaluates a material's ability to withstand a fire spreading along its surface. The method also evaluates the heat release from the material during combustion. The method is used to classify and certify materials used in marine and offshore applications.

Products and materials for maritime use is fire tested according to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) code, IMO 2010 FTP Code. The results from fire testing according to the FTP-code can be used as a basis for type approval (also called the wheel mark). Type approval is regulated in accordance with European Parliament Directive 2014/90/EU. RISE can perform the fire tests, issue the certificates and perform the production control required in order to gain the wheel mark.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The specimen is inserted in the specimen holder together with a substrate. It is vertically positioned during the test and is exposed to heat radiation from a radiation panel. The test is conducted with a pilot flame. The time is noted when the specimen is ignited as well as when the flame reaches each of the 50 mm stations along the specimen centre line. Other parameters that are notes are the time to flame out of the flame front on the center line, the burnt length and any occurrence of burning droplets.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

A test report, in Swedish or English, is delivered with the test results after testing.
