EN 61034-2 Smoke density of electric cables burning
EN 61034-2 is a fire test method that generates data that is used to evaluate formed smoke density as cables burn. Test results forms a part of the basis for CE marking according to the CPR Construction Product Regulation.

Delivery time for accredited test report is usually 4-8 weeks.
Preliminary test results can be shared when the fire test has been carried out, which is usually about 4 weeks after the test material has been delivered to RISE.- Preparations
Material consumption for testing.depends on the cable diameter, number of cable lengths needed:
40.0 < Ø → 1 pc.
20.0 < Ø ≤ 40.0 → 2 pcs.
10.0 < Ø ≤ 20.0 → 3 pcs.
5.0 < Ø ≤ 10.0 → N1 pcs.
where N1 = 45 / Ø, rounded down to the nearest integer1.0 < Ø ≤ 5.0 → the cables are distributed in bundles of 7 cable lengths in each bundle. The number of bundles, N2, depends on the diameter of the cable and is calculated according to:
N2 = 45/3Ø, rounded down to the nearest integerMaterial consumption for non-circular cables differs slightly from the above.
Each cable length is 1 m long.

Purpose
In the product development context, it is important at an early stage to investigate the extent to which cables contribute to smoke development in the event of fire. Fire testing according to EN 61034-2 generates data used to determine smoke density when cables are burned.
Requirements according to the Building Products Regulation (CPR) mean that cables must be CE marked and fire classified according to the Euroclass in order to be sold as building products. In some applications, additional classification of smoke density is required. Data from tests according to EN 61034-2 form the basis for CE marking with supplementary classification s1a or s1b.
Method
The cable to be tested is mounted in 1-meter lengths on a frame placed above a vessel containing a mixture of ethanol, methanol and water. The mixture is ignited and allowed to burn until consumed, about 40 minutes. During the test period, the smoke density formation is measured.
Deliveries
The fire test results are summarized in English in a test report delivered in digital format.
RISE holds both accreditation and notification regarding this test method why the test report is valid as a part of the CE marking documentation.
