SP FIRE 105 – Fire test for facade

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): SP FIRE 105 – Fire test for facade Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Meet the fire requirements in the BBR for facade systems in multi-storey buildings through the method SP FIRE 105. A full-scale method where the facade is exposed by an apartment fire that escapes out through a window opening. RISE offers testing at our fire lab in Borås, where our world-leading smoke cleaning system takes care of all emissions.

Purpose/Benefit:

Fire test according to SP FIRE 105 evaluates the fire properties of a facade system regarding flame spread, falling parts, temperature at the eaves and radiation towards the floor above the burning apartment. The general recommendation in National Board of Housing, Building and Planning's building regulations, the BBR, refers directly to the method in the case of external walls in building class BR1 and the requirements are described in the recommendation.

Examples of facade systems that can be tested in this method are wooden facades, rough casted cellular plastic facades, board facades, concrete elements etc.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The facade system is mounted on our rig, either directly against the steel frame or on a cover of lightweight concrete blocks. The rig is 4 meters wide and 6 meters high and contains two fictitious window openings that represent two floors.

The thing to keep in mind is that assembly should be performed as close to reality as possible. Window frames should be used around the fictitious windows and along the lower edge of the system, the edge first exposed by the fire. It is important to determine which substrate(s) the system is usually applied to and how the various components are to be mounted. Any air gaps or similair should be considered.

During testing, the rig is placed over a fire room that will simulate an apartment that is on fire. A fire with 60 liters of Heptane is the source of the fire and creates an flash over ignition of the apartment that pushes flames out of the window opening and the flames expose the surface of the facade. The test lasts around 17 minutes. During this time, falling parts are observed and temperature measurements at the eaves and radiation measurements against the floor above the burning apartment are performed. After the test, the specimen is inspected to determine how far the flame base has reached.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

After testing, a test report is delivered in Swedish or English with the results. The report can be used as a basis for an assessment from RISE or a Swedish type approval that facilitates reaching the market.

EN 16755 - Durability of reaction to fire performance.

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Is your old wood good enough? Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

EN 16755 - Durability of reaction to fire performance - Classes of fire-retardant treated wood products in interior and exterior end use applications.

Purpose/Benefit:

Multi-storey buildings with wooden facades need to fulfil the requirements in SP FIRE 105 in Sweden. The requirements should be fulfilled also when the wood has been exposed to the surrounding climate.

To ensure that your product is up to standard during its life cycle, the product shall be tested according to EN 16755 - Durability of reaction to fire performance.

This means that your product is undergoing the hygroscopicity test and accelerated weathering. Before and after accelerated weathering it is fire tested according to the SBI method.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

EN 16755 - Durability of reaction to fire performance - Classes of fire-retardant treated wood products in interior and exterior end use applications.

EN 13823 - Single Burning Item (SBI).

In accordance with EN 16755:2017, the SBI method (EN 13823) is the preferred evaluation method to validate the durability of reaction to fire performance of products meant for exterior applications. Alternatively, it is possible to use the cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1). However, due uncertainties regarding the achieved level of safety when using the cone calorimeter, RISE has chosen to NOT offer this alternative testing method until further notice. EN 16755:2017 is currently under revision and the cessation will apply at least until the new standard is ratified. Henceforth, RISE will only offer validation trough the SBI method.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

RISE guides you with our knowledge and expertise in the field and performs tests and accredited reporting.

The results will be presented in an accredited test report.

RISE has many years of experience in testing and classifying wood products. We also have a history where we have actively participated in the development of both test systems and classification systems at an international level.

Jet fire test

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Jet fire test Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

We have a long experience in jet fire testing and has been involved in the development of several jet fire test standards used by the industry and the authorities today. Our facility enables testing of complex combinations of one or several jet fires with varying heat flux levels.

Purpose/Benefit:

Jet fires represent a major fire risk in installations with pressurized hydrocarbons. Jet fires may vary with respect to flame length, heat flux and velocities, and important influencing factors are the type and nature of the fuel, pressure and amount of fuel, geometry of the rupture, and surrounding conditions. The geometry of the structure may also be an important parameter with respect to the resistance of the passive fire protection exposed to a jet fire.

We can offer jet fire tests to document the resistance capabilities of passive fire protection materials against jet fires. We offer single tests or test series comprising of one or several jet fires, as well as jet fires in combination with varying heat flux levels, for example fires following the HC curve. Jet fires can be conducted with heat flux up to 350-400 kW/m².

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Standard jet fire

The objective of a standard jet fire test is to determine the resistance of passive fire protection materials and systems to jet fires. It gives an indication of how passive fire protection materials behave in a jet fire. The test methods ISO 22899-1 and OTI 95634 cover:

- Tubulars
- Panels
- Structural steel
- Pipe- and cable penetrations

High heat flux jet fires

Our extended jet fire furnaces can be used where standard jet fires are insufficient:

- higher temperatures (1300 – 1400 °C)
- higher heat fluxes (350 kW/m²)
- for larger test specimens (Ø ~1 m)

HC - Jet combination test series

Used for certification of different specifications, with the possibility to interpolate between tests. This enables us to test variations of the fire protection in multiple test subjects in a single horizontal furnace HC-test, and then compare this to a selection of variations subjected to a jet fire test.

- HC fire (pool fire), horizontal furnace
- Jet fire
- Jet fire addition

Sequential jet and pool-fire test

The extended jet fire furnace can be used to simulate the exposure inside a HC fire furnace. This gives us the ability to perform a combination of jet fire directly followed by a simulated HC-fire in the same test. For example:

- 350 kW/m² jet fire for 15 minutes + 2 hours pool fire.

Pressurized pipes, valves and end connections

We offer testing of pressurized pipes, valves and end connections according to API standards.

Mini jet-fire

This is a smaller-scale test set-up mainly developed for product development and realistic screening tests. The mini jet uses a premixed flame of air and propane to obtain similar temperature as in a standard jet fire according to ISO 22899-1. The flame temperatures are similar, but the erosion effect on the test subject is not comparable.

Test of cryogenic spill protection

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Test of cryogenic spill protection Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

As the first laboratory in the world, we now offer testing of insulation materials that have been exposed to cryogenic spillage. We offer customized tests documenting the materials' resistance.

Purpose/Benefit:

In case of a cryogenic spillage, the low temperatures of the fluid can damage structures, instruments and equipment and degrade insulation materials protecting them. The purpose of the test is to document the material's insulation and resistance capabilities.

In addition, a cryogenic release of LNG represents a fire and explosion hazard, which means that insulation materials ought to withstand both the cryogenic release and jet fire. We offer customized tests to document the materials' resistance against cryogenic spill and a sequential jetfire.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

We offer tests according to ISO 20088-1 “Determination of the resistance to cryogenic spillage of insulation materials - Part 1: Liquid phase” and ISO 20088-3 “Determination of the resistance to cryogenic spillage of insulation materials - Part 3: Jet release".

Testing of load-bearing and non-load-bearing boards

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Testing of board material Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

RISE tests boards for non-load-bearing purposes and load-bearing boards for constructive use in walls, floors and ceilings and performs manufacturing inspections in production plants. We also have our own method for testing of step through safety that has been developed to meet the Swedish Work Environment Authority's rules.

Purpose/Benefit:

Testing can be performed prior to certification of boards such as CE marking or because the manufacturer for some other reason wants to know the quality of the boards. It can be wood based boards such as chipboards, OSB and plywood or other types of boards as gypsum boards, fiber cement boards, etc.

Wood-based boards for construction purposes, load-bearing or not, must today be CE-marked against EN 13986 as it is a harmonized standard.  Depending of the intended use for the product the tests can be more or less extensice. Sometimes it is enough with material tests of small specimens, but sometimes it is necessary to performe full scale type testing of the construction. Wood-based boards that are explicitly for floors and ceilings are tested according to EN 1195 and EN 12871 (static and dynamic point load). Walls are tested according to EN 12871 and EN 596 (soft body impact) and/or EN 594 (strength and stiffness, so-called racking test).

Tests according to EN 12871 take place with more or less finished roof, wall or floor constructions, eg floor chipboard, roof plywood, heated floors or installation floors.

RISE can also determine formaldehyde content according to the perforator method (EN 120) and formaldehyde release in chambers, for eg CARB, EPA or CE-marking.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The boards are tested in a lab environment, ranging from a sawn-out board specimen to a full format construction.
