Tobias Edman is Head of Unit for Data Platforms and Systems at RISE Department of Computer Science, and Vice President of Space Technology with overall responsibility for RISE's space activities.
The unit conducts applied research and development through three research groups:
- High-Performance Computing (HPC) — AI training infrastructure, and scientific computing. The group operates Sweden's EuroCC competence centre ENCCS and is responsible for Sweden's coordination of MIMER AI Factory (Sweden's EuroHPC AI Factory).
- Quantum Information — quantum software, quantum algorithms, and quantum computing. The group works on algorithm development, quantum programming models, hybrid classical–quantum computational workflows, and integration with HPC infrastructure.
- Space Technology — satellite data, AI for Earth observation, and on-board processing. The group operates Digital Earth Sweden — the national platform for satellite data and AI-based Earth observation — and ESA Phi-Lab Sweden, ESA's national environment for AI and edge computing.
As Director of Space Technology, Tobias coordinates and strengthens RISE's overall space activities — from test and qualification infrastructure to applied research in space data, AI, and system validation.
In his external roles, Tobias represents Sweden in the Destination Earth Coordination Group, the SIS standardisation committee for space technology, Geoforum, Rymdforum (the Swedish Space Forum), and SOFF's space group, and contributes to Sweden's coordination of Copernicus. Before joining RISE, Tobias was Head of Innovation and Societal Benefit at the Swedish National Space Agency.
