Contact FrederikThe RISE Workshops On Performance Prediction for Wind-Powered Ships (SWOPP) are a series of benchmark projects for all organizations working with performance predictions of wind-powered and wind-assisted ships. Building on the insights and feedback from SWOPP 1 & 2 we now invite to SWOPP 3.
SWOPP 3
An extensive industry benchmarking study on weather routing and speed optimization.
First ever extensive industry benchmark study
The purpose of the SWOPP joint industry project is to establish a baseline by comparing results of performance predictions from the participating organisations.
How does SWOPP 3 work?
Participants will receive performance data (“polars”) for a generic wind-powered vessel, along with boundary conditions representing typical voyage scenarios. Using their own optimization tools, participants will weather-route the vessel and submit results to the organizers.
While a description of the routing methodology and algorithms is welcome, it is not mandatory. All submitted results will be anonymized and compared.
At the conclusion of the project, participants will be invited to a meeting in Gothenburg.
Finally, there is the option to contribute to a joint publication.
Test case
A generic primary wind-powered general cargo vessel with wing sails.
Predictions
The following results will be compared:
- Energy savings for a given maximum crossing time using speed optimization alone.
- Savings for a given maximum crossing time using speed optimization and weather routing.
Note
There will be no validation data available. The purpose of the exercise is to compare predictions from various methods and discuss the spreading.
Input
RISE will provide all input required to conduct the calculations including the necessary “polars” There is no need to carry out simulations in a Velocity/Performance Prediction Program (VPP/PPP). The purpose of SWOPP 3 is solely to compare results from different weather routing methods. Participation in the previous SWOPP 1 & 2 workshops is not a prerequisite!
