Electric vehicles potential to contribute with frequency regulation

Through vehicle-to-grid (V2G), electric vehicles can help balance the power grid, but realizing this potential requires an understanding of drivers’ willingness and ability to make their batteries available. In this project, we use measured real world driving patterns to study individual drivers’ opportunities to contribute to frequency regulation.

Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) creates new opportunities to use the growing fleet of electric vehicles as a flexible resource to balance the power system. The project examines how individual EV drivers’ driving patterns, access to charging infrastructure, and economic conditions affect their ability to make batteries available for frequency regulation. By analyzing GPS data from around 400 cars and modeling battery degradation, the project generates insights that can reduce uncertainties about profitability and battery wear, thereby strengthening the role of EVs in the future flexible power system.
