Something is happening with AI—and it’s not what we discussed a year ago. The focus has shifted from what AI can do to what it actually does, where it’s used, and what it demands in practice. It’s a more mature, more important conversation. This year, three shifts define a new chapter for AI.
AI has long lived in experiments, in labs, in prototypes and in projects that rarely reached everyday use. That is changing. Requirements for robustness, reproducibility and solutions that work when operations actually depend on them are now taking center stage.
To create direction in a time when everyone is moving fast, we need strong examples. Applications that work, that hold up in operation and that we and others can build on. In this issue we present several such examples, from industry and care to energy systems and cybersecurity.
For us to create direction in a time when everyone is moving fast, we need strong examples. Applications that work, that hold up in operation and that we and others can build on.
Which foundation model is used is now rarely the decisive question. What matters is what lies beneath. The capacity to train, run and manage AI at scale, with control over data, costs and dependencies.
Mistral’s investments in Swedish data centers, the development of AI gigafactories and the continued expansion of the AI factory Mimer are not marginal news. They are signs that Europe and Sweden are taking their digital capacity and independence seriously. Infrastructure is no longer a technical detail. It is a strategic asset.
As AI enters systems that underpin society, questions follow that do not solve themselves. Who holds power over the digital conversation. How do we build resilience when AI is used for both defense and attack. How do we ensure that the technology strengthens rather than erodes trust and equality.
In this issue we explore these questions in depth, from cybersecurity and democracy to new ways of working to understand and manage the societal effects of technology. Responsibility is not an obstacle to development. It is the condition for making it sustainable.
In our latest publication, State of AI by RISE 2025 and beyond, we have gathered more than thirty applications that clearly show how AI is shaping today and what comes next. Do not miss the opportunity to download the magazine. You will find the link at the bottom of the newsletter.
Now the work continues.
2026 is here.
In our newsletter The State of AI by RISE, we share insights on AI research, trends, and future outlooks. You’ll also get an overview of what’s happening within AI at RISE and what our researchers see on the horizon.
