Calibration at a National Laboratory meets all the typical requirements for traceability and accreditation commonly found in industry and society at large.

RISE offers calibration of direct current in the range 10 fA – 6000 A. For calibration of calibrators in the interval 10 µA - 20 A, the current is determined by measuring the voltage across a resistance standard (current shunt). The calibrator is thereafter used as a stable current generator for calibration of current measuring instruments, for example multimeters. The calibrator can, however, be sensitive to different loads. If instead the current measuring instrument is connected in series with a current shunt, the current in the circuit can be determined by Ohm’s law and the measurement will not be load-dependent.

For calibration of currents smaller than 10 µA other instruments are used. For example a source meter to generate small currents, or an electrometer to measure small currents. Source meters and electrometers are calibrated either with a resistance standard (≥100 pA) or with voltage ramps across a capacitance standard (≤100 pA).

For calibration of currents higher than 100 A other methods are used. Those calibrations are carried out by the National Laboratory for high voltage and high current.

The calibration resources for direct voltage are in the range of 1 nV – 1MV. In addition to voltage standards we also calibrate different kind of instruments, for example voltage dividers, voltmeters and calibrators. We also calibrate ECG calibrators. For high voltage, above 1000 V, the most common objects are voltage dividers and probes.

Almost all calibration of voltage standards for voltages up to 10 V are fully automatized and are carried out through comparison with groups of primary and secondary voltage standards. The measurement interval can be varied from a few seconds when short term stability is measured, to several weeks for long term stability. The measurement uncertainty is at best 0.3 μV/V.

For calibrations up to 10 V of voltage standards and certain types of voltage dividers we offer calibration with the best possible measurement uncertainty by calibration directly against a Josephson standard. The measurement uncertainty will then be 3 nV/V at best.

Other types of measurements can also be performed, for example extraction of temperature coefficient.

The measurement uncertainty given for a calibration depends, in addition to the calibration equipment’s performance, also on the calibration object’s performance (stability, temperature coefficient, voltage dependence and so on). In most cases, a preliminary estimate of the measurement uncertainty can be given from experience before the calibration.

RISE are able to calibrate most types of colour meters. The calibration is performed using ceramic colour standards in various colours and shades of grey. The calibration is available for multiple measurement geometries e.g. 45°/0°, 8°/t och 8°/d. Other geometries can also be accommodated. We offer both 2° and 10° standard observers as well as standard illuminants A, C and D65. 

The calibrations takes place at the laboratory for photometry and radiometry in Borås.

The national laboratory can calibrate spectroradiometers in the range 200 nm to 2500 nm. 

The calibration involves using the software for the spectroradiometer to generate a calibration file. A spectral irradiance standard is used as a reference in the calibration. The range 200 nm to 250 nm is currently outside the scope of our traceability but this range can be added to the calibration by extrapolating from known values for a deuterium source.

Since the software for the spectroradiometer is required for a calibration it may happen that the customer needs to provide access to the software in cases where RISE does not have access to the software internally. 

Tapping machines are used as sound source at tests within building acoustics.

The purpose of the calibration is to verify that the tapping machine complies with the requirements of ISO 10140-5 and ISO 16283-2.

Accredited calibration fullfils all typical traceability requirements that commonly exist in industry and society at large.

The properties of the tapping machine are mechanically defined, which means that the calibrated characreristics are hammer velocity, impact angle, hammer tip curvature, etc.

If needed, we can also make minor service on the tapping machine, such as cleaning, feet adjustments and hammer exchange.

The calibration results are reported in a digital calibration certificate in Swedish or English which states if the tapping machine is complying with the actual ISO standard.

RISE is calibrating most types of vibration transducers. The transducer can be calibrated separately or together with its conditioning unit.

The most common type of vibration transducers is the accelerometer, but velocity transducers also occur, especially within the fields of ground vibrations and machine monitoring.

The most common calibration is a sine calibration between 6,3 and 2000 Hz alternatively between 20 and 8000 Hz.

Low frequency transducers can be calibrated down to below 1 Hz.

Accelerometers which are used at high levels can be shock calibrated up to 50000 m/s².

Vibration velocity transducers can be excited horizontally or vertically.

Reference accelerometers, i.e. calibration standards, are calibrated with laser interferometer technique.

Other types of vibration transducers, e.g. impact hammers, impedance heads and dynamic force transducers, are also calibrated.

The characteristics of sound calibrators are specified in the international standard IEC 60942. Requirements and tolerances for sound pressure level, frequency, distortion and stability are among other things stated in this standard. The standard gives three classes of accuracy, LS, 1 and 2. Class LS is intended only for laboratory use while class 1 and 2 are intended for field use. These classes match the corresponding class for sound level meters.

RISE calibrates all types of sound calibrators. Parameters which are calibrated are sound pressure level, frequency and distortion. If the instrument is equipped with an accessory barometer, we check this as well at current air pressure

The recommended calibration interval is 1 year for sound calibrators.

IEC 60942

The National Laboratory for Length and Dimensional Metrology offers calibration of form standards intended for use with form measuring devices.

Form measurements includes parameters such as roundness, cylindricity, straightness and flatness. The definitions of these parameters will be found in ISO 1101. Roundness standards, reference cylinders, straightness standards and flatness standards are calibrated in accordance with these definitions. We offer also calibration of measuring instruments for form and amplification standards for roundness testers. The measuring methods that are used in the calibrations are based on tactile measurements.

The calibration results are reported in a digital calibration certificate in Swedish or English which states that the calibration was performed at a national laboratory.

ISO 1101

The National Laboratory for Length and Dimensional Metrology offers calibration of line scales.

We offer calibration of line scales, from very accurate microscope scales (stage micrometers, glass scales) of a few mm in length, to workshop scales (steel rulers) up to 3000 mm.

Line scales are calibrated in a measuring machine using a microscope for reading of the scale lines and a laser interferometer to measure the distances between the lines. The finest, most accurate scales, manufactured of metal or glass are calibrated using a machine vision system, to detect the scale lines.

For less accurate scales with coarser lines, we use a measuring machine with a manual reading microscope to detect the lines. This method is applied on line scales up to 3000 mm. The zero point on these scales can be defined as the first scale line or at the edge of the scale.

Heavier equipment, such as measuring machines, generally must be calibrated where they stand. The National Laboratory for Length and Dimensional Metrology performs field calibrations of measuring equipment, where high accuracies are needed. We use physical standards as well as laser interferometers, depending on the properties of the measuring equipment that needs calibration. The temperature is carefully surveyed during the calibration process and when needed we make temperature corrections of the results.
