Step gauges up to 1500 mm are calibrated in a measuring machine fitted with special equipment for measuring these gauges. The measurement is made with a measuring probe on the measuring surfaces. A laser interferometer is used as a reference.

The calibration results are reported in a digital calibration certificate in Swedish or English which states that the calibration was performed at a national laboratory.

Surface texture (roughness) is the microscopic structure, consisting of scratches, pores etc. that exists on a surface. It has great importance for industrially important properties such as friction, lubrication, corrosion, noise reduction and paint work.

Our services encompass both traceable calibrations of standards for surface roughness and evaluation of surface texture on manufactured components.

RISE is verifying most types of sound level meters and sound analysers.

The characteristics of sound level meters are specified in the international standard IEC 61672, or for older instruments IEC 60651 and IEC 60804. Measurement procedures and tolerances to verify that the characteristics of the sound level meter are correct are also stated in these standards. Examples of characteristics which are tested: frequency response of microphone and filter, the different time weightings (Fast, Slow etc.), level linearity, overrange indication etc.

Sound level meters are divided into different classes of accuracy, where class 1 is normal for precision measurements and class 2 for simpler measurements. Approximate accuracy for a sound level meter of class 1 is 1 dB and 2 dB for class 2. However, the accuracy is dependent on the character of the sound.

Sound level meters have often an octave band analysis feature. Characteristics for this is specified in a separate standard, IEC 61260.

The National Laboratory for pressure and vacuum performs calibration of pressure balances. This is the most accurate and complex calibration performed and is done according to current standards and guides.

The pressure balance to be calibrated is connected to the National Labratory's reference pressure balance. The calibration takes place at six to eight pressure points over the balance pressure range. At each level, the balances are balanced against each other, whereby a reference pressure is obtained and used for calculation of results.

There are two methods used in pressure balance calibration. The first method gives a result in form of correction terms at certain pressure levels as well as associated measurement uncertainties. According to this method, the weights of the object does not need to be calibrated before the pressure balance calibration but certiain weight compositions are used to set a nominal pressure. This means that the calibration results only covers the specifik calibrated pressure levels.

The second method involves weighing the weights and piston / cylinder combination at the National Laboratory for mass. The result from that calibration is then used to calculate the effective area of ​​the piston / cylinder combination by means of the reference pressure. This means that the pressure balance is calibrated so that the customer receives sufficient information to be able to measure pressure over the entire pressure balance interval, not just the pressure levels covered in the calibration certificate.

Results are reported in a digital calibration certificate in Swedish or English. The result is presented as correction terms with associated measurement uncertainties or as effective area with measurement uncertainties, depending on the method used for the calibration. The certificate also contains information that the calibration was performed at a National Laboratory.

All pressure balances to be calibrated must be cleaned before delivery to the national measurement site.

The pressure and vacuum National Laboratory performs calibrations of all types of vacuum gauges. Calibration at the National Laboratory always guarantees the highest possible traceability in the measurements performed.

The vacuum gauge is connected to the national Laboratory's standards and the calibration is performed at agreed upon pressure levels. Calibration of vacuum meters always takes place at increasing pressures. The National Laboratory performs calibrations of vacuum gauges from 5·10^-6 Pa and upward.

Since the National Laboratory is the highest calibration body in Sweden, calibrations are performed here with the highest possible traceability.

The pressure media used for calibration of vacuum gauges at the National Laboratory site is nitrogen gas.

Each type of meter requires its own calibration method and equipment. The National Laboratory för Volume and Flow has about ten measurement equipments to be able to calibrate different types of flowmeters.

Calibration of the entire signal chain

When calibrating it is impotant that the output signal (for example the pulse, the flow or the current display device) that are used normally, also is the one that is being calibrated. Output signals can go through separate amplifiers or converters and they can have different time constants and different zero suppression. Because of that, it is very important that the whole signal chain is calibrated. By calibrating, the error of the flowmeter's display can be determined.

Different flowmeters requires different calibration methods

Each type of meter requires its own calibration method and equipment. Questions regarding the choice of method and equipment include the following:

• type of meter (resolution, type of output signal, integration time, etc.)
• type of liquid (density, viscosity, aggressiveness, temperature, pressure, etc)
• mode of use (continuous operation, dosing volume, installation, etc.)
• accuracy (which measurement uncertainty to be accepted)

To be able to meet different requirements of calibration, we have calibration resources in the form of about ten different types of measuring equipment, several of which are fully or partly self-developed. As a national laboratory, RISE is responsible for the national standards, which means that our measurements are directly traceable to these standards.

Sometimes best results are achieved if you can calibrate on site at customers as you do not need to move the meter or container from its regular location. The calibration can then take into account sources of error as, such as installation, flow profile, signal processing and peripherals. Calibration on site at customers also implies that the calibration is carried out with the right fluid and that interruptions in the customer’s production can be completely avoided.

The National Laboratory for Volume and Flow holds a high level of competence, which is required to perform accurate calibrations in the field. For smaller meters, mobile volume normals can be used. For larger meters, master meters or mobile calibration equipment are used, so-called provers that have a measurement uncertainty less than ±0.1%.

Meters for most media can be tested, such as water, gasoline, oil and condensed gas (LPG). Our equipment handle flow rates up to 26,000 liters / minute and with a average temperature up to +120 degrees.

Calibration of two meters in series can be done simultaneously and measurement results can be correlated. In addition, the measuring equipment can be used within a classified area (zone 1) regarding a potentially explosive environment.

It often involves gravimetric calibration for smaller volumes, i.e. weighing a liquid with known density. Larger volumes are normally calibrated volumetrically, e.g. by filling from a volume standard with a known volume.

We offer calibration of measuring wheels which are used in several areas and are divided into two main categories:

• Measuring wheels which are rolled on the ground to measure for example football fields or roadwork.
• Measuring wheels which are used in industry to measure the length of cables or fabrics

Measuring wheels come in various sizes (often 500 mm in diameter and 10 to 80 mm in width) with wear surface in different materials, most often aluminum or rubber. If the measuring wheel being calibrated has a counting device attached this is also checked at the time of calibration.
