Coating thickness variation measurement using burnout technique

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Coating thickness variation measurement Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Coating thickness variation can affect the print results and give mottle because the local absorption will differ

Purpose/Benefit:

The measurement of coating thickness variation will reveal if this is the cause for mottle on the printed samples or if the print results is bad because of other paper or paper board properties like surface roughness or white-top mottle.

The measurement can be used to answer:

  • Measure if the mottle (e.g. coating thickness variation) level is acceptable and stable over time
  • Check if coating thickness variations is the cause for mottle
  • Monitor how new settings in the productions affect the coating thickness variation
  • Check if new products are better or not when it comes to coating thickness variation
Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

First the samples are treated with a burnout technique where the fibres become black, but the coating remains white. Next step is to scan the samples in a flatbed scanner and the gray level image is calibrated to reflectance using a calibration set.
Variations in the range 1 to 8 mm are summed since these have been found to be the most disturbing range in visual assessments.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The mottle value, which is the reflectance variations as Coefficient of Variation in size interval (wavelengths) 1-8 mm proved to correlate to the perceived mottle at a normal reading distance of 400 mm. Also, detailed mottle values divided in spatial octave bands, ex. 0.25-0.5 mm, 0.5-1 mm, 1-2 mm, 2-4 mm, 4-8 mm and 8-16 mm revealing the coating thickness variations in fine scale, medium scale and large scale. The results are saved in an Excel file.

Measurement of Print sharpness – a combination of raggedness and blurriness

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Print sharpness measurement Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Print sharpness is a factor of immediate importance in inkjet printing due to the inherent risk of lateral spread of the low viscosity inks used. High print sharpness is a basic characteristic of high print quality.

Purpose/Benefit:

Measurement of Print sharpness can be used to:

  • Check if the print raggedness and blurriness is acceptable and stable over time
  • Benchmark to competitors
  • Monitor how new settings in the productions affect the print raggedness and blurriness
  • Check if new products are better or not
Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Quantify the print sharpness using high resolution images from a microscope or professional scanner.
The measurements are not restricted to a certain print form, instead any printed line or edge can be used for the analysis, for example part of a letter.
Two different properties are calculated:

  • The raggedness which is the length of the contour of an edge compared to the perfect straight contour
  • The blurriness meaning the width of the transition zone between ink and unprinted area

Image analysis is used to calculate the raggedness and the blurriness on the measured lines and shapes.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):
  • The raggedness which is the length of the contour of an edge compared to the perfect straight contour
  • The blurriness meaning the width of the transition zone between ink and unprinted area.

Results delivered as an Excel file.

Mottle evaluation - Measure reflectance variations as we perceive it

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Mottle evaluation Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Mottle is without doubt one of the most important factors regarding visual impression of print quality. Investigations in our perception laboratory show that the calculated mottle values correlate very well to the human perception both for full tone prints, screened prints and unprinted samples (e.g. white-top mottle)

Purpose/Benefit:

It is still common to use visual assessments to quantify the amount of mottle. However, the drawback of using visual evaluation is high cost and time consumption. Instrumental
evaluation using the STFI-Mottling tool solves this problem being both less time consuming and easier to compare with other evaluations.

The evaluation can be used for:

  • Measure if the mottle level is acceptable and stable over time
  • Benchmark to competitors
  • Monitor how new settings in the productions affect the mottle level
  • Check if new products are better or not when it comes to mottle
Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

A flatbed scanner is used to collect the images and the data is calibrated to reflectance using a calibration set.
Small- and large-scale variations are removed using frequency analysis. Only variations in the range 1 to 8 mm are measured since these have been found to be the most disturbing range in visual assessments. The software is very flexible, and it is possible to measure areas of size 25x25 mm up to 200x200 mm. Normally, 4-8 areas are evaluated for better accuracy.

Surface roughness measurement using OptiTopo technique

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Surface roughness measurement using OptiTopo technique Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

The unique OptiTopo technique used for print prediction quickly reveals the correlation between paper surface and print defects such as uncovered area or missing dots

Purpose/Benefit:

Very detailed height variations are calculated on a 32x32 mm area of the paper surface using a patented shape from shading technique. The high-resolution height maps (4 million height values) gives a great advantage to traditional air-leak instruments like PPS and Bendtsen that has traditionally been used for print prediction on paper and paperboard. The possibility to filter the height map makes it possible to filter out non-interesting large-scale variations and only count the “dangerous” craters.

The OptiTopo measurements can be used to answer:

  • How do the surface defects look like?
  • Why did we get a customer complaint from this sample?
  • In which way does my new product differ from my old?
  • Detailed fingerprint features of the surface roughness can be obtained.
  • How should the surface of my product look like to ensure the desired print quality level?
  • Can I fine-tune the filtering settings to find craters or hills that are potentially dangerous to reach my desired print quality level?
Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The shape from shading OptiTopo technique calculate a very detailed height map. The x/y resolution is 15.6x15.6 µm and the z-resolution < 0.1 µm. The height map is filtered using the image analysis technique Fast Fourier transform (FFT) to divide the height variation in spatial size classes and find craters and surface variation of the type we know correlate to the print results.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

An Excel report consisting of:

  • Surface variation in fine, medium and large scale.
  • The amount of crater area below -1.5, -3 and 5 µm.
  • Detailed surface variation spectra to reveal periodic variations like wire marks.

“A picture is worth a thousand words”.
It is difficult to describe everything with numbers but combined with images you get a better understanding of the relationship between the paper/board surface and the print quality.

Word report consisting of:

  • Gradient maps that shows how the surface variation look like.
  • Height maps (color coded)
  • Crater maps where the “dangerous” craters are outlined
