Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Road equipment - Mechanical properties Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Road equipment includes products that are meant to help and protect you and other road users. There is a requirement that lighting columns, road restraint systems, signs, delineator posts and road traffic noise reducing devices are CE-marked in order for the road holder to be able to provide the roads with save and adapted products.

Purpose/Benefit:

Today, there is a requirement for CE marking for road equipment components. In order to CE-mark products, essential features need to be developed or reviewed by a notified body (an approved independent partner). We at RISE can help you with testing, calculation, guidance, investigation or evaluation in the field of crash, fatigue, as well as static and dynamic load.

The requirements for the mechanical properties of road equipment components are used to reduce the number of deaths and injuries in traffic.

RISE can help you to prepare documentation for the technical documentation (the technical file) that is available to show that the product meets the necessary requirements.

We deliver an efficient evaluation process for you who need to CE-mark road equipment components. Through our work we can help reduce the cost of your development process, for example with a reduced test plan or engineering assessments. Engaging us early in the development process can make your path smoother and faster to a CE-marked product.

UN, Manual of Tests and Criteria, section 33.2.4 Test N.1: Test method for flammable solids

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Dangerous goods testing, Test N.1 - Burning rate Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Testing according to "UN Reccomendations on the transport of dangerous goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, section 33.2.4 Test N.1: Test method for flammable solids" evaluates a materials tendency to propagate fire. The data is used for determination of safe transportation.

Purpose/Benefit:

Dangerous goods are items or substances that can imply a risk for health, safety, property, or the environment. Some items, which may not be harmful by itself, may become a risk when combined with other substances.

Most regulations concerning dangerous goods, such as national regulations, the IMDG Code, IATA etc. are based on the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods Model Regulations. The guidance document is developed by the United Nations to uniform national and international regulations.

Dangerous goods are divided into nine different classes, grouped by their physical and chemical properties. Through testing a packaging group is assigned, in accordance with the degree of danger they present. In Division 4.1:

CLASS       SUBSTANCE
1.          Explosive substances and articles
2.          Gases
3.          Flammable liquids
4.1        Flammable solids
4.2        Substances liable to spontaneous combustion
4.3        Substances which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases
5.1        Oxidizing substances
5.2        Organic peroxides
6.1        Toxic substances
6.2        Infectious substances
7.          Radioactive materials
8.          Corrosive substances
9.          Miscellaneous dangerous substances and articles

Testing is performed according to the UN manual of Tests and Criteria - Section 33: Division 4.1 Test N.1: Test method for flammable solids. The test generates data which can be used to classify dangerous goods and as a basis for risk analysis and research.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Testing is performed by applying a burner to a 250 mm unbroken strip, or powder train, of the material which rests on an impervious surface. Ignition and flame propagation is observed. Initial testing is performed according to 33.2.4.3.1 Preliminary screening test, if the material propagates combustion in a given time frame the Burning rate test, according to 33.2.4.3.2, shall be carried out. In the Burning rate test the burning time is measured and depending on how fast the flame front propagates the product is assigned a suitable packing group.

The product can be classified as "Not a flammable solid", "Flammable solid - Packing group II/Cat. 1" or "Flammable solid-  Packing group III/Cat. 2".

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The result is summarized by RISE in a written report. The report is delivered in English.

Evaluation of functional safety in machine control systems

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Machine control systems Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

The trend in the industry today is that an increasing part of the risk reduction is dependent on the correct operation of the machine's control system. This applies both to traditional machines but also to mobile machines. RISE is accredited by Swedac for evaluating control systems in machines and works with standards such as ISO 13849 and IEC 6206

Purpose/Benefit:

RISE can help evaluate that the requirements of these machine safety standards are met. The reason for taking help from RISE can either be to build up your internal expertise in the area or that you need an independent evaluation of your design. If your product is classified as Logic Units for Protective Functions in accordance with point 21 of Annex 4 of the Machinery Directive 2006/42 / EC, we can issue an EC type-approval in addition to an evaluation report.

By using RISE early in your Product development, you avoid the risk of misinterpreting these functional safety standards. The first choice is whether you shall work with ISO 13849 which is based on the risk reduction measure Performance level or IEC 62061 which is based on the risk reduction measure SIL - Safety Integrity Level or alternatively if for your product there are other functional safety requirements stated directly in your product safety standard. Even when identifying the correct standard, there are many pitfalls, we usually stress how important it is to define the safety functions correctly before proceeding with the design of the associated software and hardware.

The evaluation is based on ISO 13849-1:2015 but we are also updated on the upcoming version ISO 13849-1:2023. The updates to the standard include (among other things):

  • Clearer definitions of terms and concepts that will make it easier to understand and apply the standard.
  • Expanded use of Performance level (PL)
  • Updated documentation requirements to ensure that all necessary information on machinery safety is documented and available.
  • The new standard emphasises more the human role in machinery safety, including the need to train and develop user competence in the use of machinery and safety-related parts of control systems.
Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The evaluation is based on our Swedac accredited methods for:

  • ISO 13849
  • IEC 62061
Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The result of the functional safety evaluation is summarized in an accredited RISE report.
