Laser Safety

Laser Safety

RISE offers a laser safety course for companies. The course is aimed at laser safety managers or others who work with or near lasers. The course can be held either on-site at your premises or at RISE in Borås.

All operations that handle high-power lasers are obliged to comply with the laws and regulations that regulate such activities. For example, the company must have an appointed laser safety officer (AFS 2009:7). Our course in laser safety is suitable for people who have laser safety responsibilities or who otherwise work with or near high-power lasers.

The course provides documented competence for the use of lasers in a safe and legal manner.

Target Group
Laser safety officers, users/operators, service personnel of laser equipment, safety representatives, work environment inspectors, work environment engineers and supervisors.

Admission requirements
No prior knowledge is required. However, upper secondary school competence facilitates the understanding of laboratory work and calculations.

Content On the course
The course teaches participants to interpret and understand the applicable regulations and standards. This includes, for example, what different laser classes mean, how one is required to protect oneself and others, and how to choose the appropriate type of protection. The content can also be tailored to provide extra relevance to the company’s specific use of lasers.

Laboratory sessions can also be offered as part of a company-specific course, provided the course is held at RISE in Borås.
During the laboratory sessions, participants learn how to measure various properties of lasers. The labs also cover different types of lasers such as scanning lasers, fiber optic lasers, invisible laser radiation, etc., to demonstrate various types of risks that may occur.

Fault injection and attack injection

Fault injection

Fault injection is used in as an assessment activity to evaluate the effectiveness of error handling mechanisms. Moreover, fault injection is either recommended or highly recommended in many standards related to the development of dependable systems, for example, ISO 13849, IEC 61508 and ISO 26262.

In this course, we explain how fault and attack injection could be used for validation of dependability and security attributes of related systems and components. The course is designed and given by lecturers who have a combined experience of more than 30 years in the area.

Goal & purpose

The course focuses on the increase of knowledge and understanding of the participants on how fault and attack injection could be used for dependability validation of computer systems. This is done through presentation of techniques and tools that one could use to be able to inject faults and attacks into computer systems. Moreover, we discuss how the results of the fault and attack injection experiments could be classified, i.e., what are systems’ failure modes. The advantages and disadvantages of different injection techniques and tools will also be discussed.

Target group & expected prior knowledge

The course is suitable for hardware experts, software developers, testers as well as early-stage engineers and researchers involved in development of dependable computer systems. Basic knowledge of hardware and software is required.

Content

During the day, the lecturers will go through the (i) background with a focus on dependability and security threats, dependability validation, and failure modes; (ii) physical and simulation-based fault injection techniques; (iii) state-of-the-art research on fault injection such as error space pruning and error propagation; and (iv) demo of fault and attack injection using MODIFI (Model-implemented Fault and attack Injection) tool.
