Interfacial Contact Resistance (ICR) measurements

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Interfacial Contact Resistance (ICR) measurements Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Do you want to understand how electrical contact between surfaces is affected by pressure, material, and corrosion? RISE offers interfacial contact resistance measurements which fives valuble insight in electrical and mechanical properties, crucial for devoplment within for example batteries, fuel cells, and electronics.

Purpose/Benefit:

Electrical interfacial contact resistance (ICR)  is caused at the interface of two surfaces, in addition to the reistances of the materials. Measuring this property is crucial within applications such as fuel cells, batteries, and electrical contacts - where low ICR is directly connected to performance and safety. The method is also a powerful tool for analysing the effect of corrosion, by measurements before and after a corrosion layer is formed.

RISE offers this

RISE offers fundamental ICR measurements as part of our services within material characterization and corrosion analysis. By combining electrical measurements with a controlled pressure you will gain insight how the material behaves under actual conditions  and how corrosion affects the electrical contact.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):
  • Two gold coated probes are pressed against the sample surface at controlled pressures.
  • A low current is passed through the sample and the voltage is measured between the surfaces
  • The interfacial contact resistance (ICR) is measured at different compression pressures
  • Measurements can be performed between sample and a reference surface or between two sample surfaces
  • Probes in different sizes and geometries may be used after your need

The method can be combined with our corrosion measurements for a complete understanding of the electrical properties of the material and effects of corrosion. The method can be adapted to your needs, contact us for more info.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The results are summerized in a report with the measured ICR values at chosen compression pressures. All raw data may be attached. In combination with other services these results will be included in the report. You will get a decision basis helping you optimize design, material choice, and durability.

Pneumatic method for determination of bursting strength and bursting distension SS-EN ISO 13938-2

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Bursting strength and elongation Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Materials that are stretchable or for other reasons not suitable for tensile testing can instead be tested for bursting strength.

Purpose/Benefit:

To test bursting strength of materials that are not suitable for tensile testing. The method is;  SS-EN ISO 13938-2. Textiles – Bursting properties of fabrics – Part 2: Pneumatic method for determining of bursting strength and bursting distension.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

In the burst strength tester, the sample is clamped on top of a membrane so that it remains completely still. Using compressed air, the membrane is lifted upwards until the sample breaks or bursts. The force is then recorded in kPa and the elongation is measured in %.

This is a good alternative to regular tensile testing if the sample is stretchable, very fragile, or very strong. Knits, warp knits, non-wovens, both coated and uncoated, stretch fabrics, tights, etc., are materials that can advantageously be measured using this method. We have 3 different sizes of measuring heads to adapt to different types of materials. However, values cannot be compared between the different heads. Testing can be performed either in a conditioned state or in a wet state.

The method is accredited according to ISO 17025.

Biogas sampling (also compressed biogas CBG and liquid biogas LBG)

Our sampling services are performed by RISE personnel on site at the customer's premises and ensure that sampling is done correctly by an independent party.

Purpose/Benefit:

Our sampling services are performed by RISE personnel on site at the customer's premises and ensure that sampling is done correctly by an independent party. Sampling can affect analysis results (i.e. the quality of the biogas) and can lead to incorrect conclusions. Therefore, the first step before analysis is important - the sampling.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Determination of oil in vehicle gas

We perform gas sampling at filling stations (NGV1 or NGV2 connections) according to ISO 2615:2023 to verify the requirements set out in EN 16723–2:2017. If necessary, we can sample gas for other parameters such as composition with respect to main components and impurities, etc. Oil analysis can be an important part of systematic quality work and a preventive measure in service and maintenance work as well as an indicator of the condition of the compressor. We also take samples in gas bags, gas cylinders (max. 10 bar pressure) and/or on sorbent tubes.

Sampling of biogas and LNG/LBG (liquefied natural gas/biogas)

Sampling can be carried out at biogas plants, bus depots, gas stations or LNG terminals. It is important to use the right equipment and follow safety regulations for a safe environment. We take samples in gas bags, gas cylinders (max 10 bar pressure) and/or on sorbent tubes.

Next generation Marine Materials for Offshore Renewable Energy

MORE
Research in marin energy

The aim of the project is to create a new methodology for testing materials and components for offshore energy. The project will contribute to simpler and improved material choices that provide a longer lifespan and thus reduced costs. This helps renewable energy to increase its competitiveness.

Division: Division Materials and Industry

The project is a CETP (Clean Energy Transition Partnership) project, the Swedish part is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency. Involved in the project, in addition to RISE, are eight organisations/companies from Europe.

All materials used for offshore energy are affected by the harsh environment. Wave movements and the tough electrolyte affect the durability of various components, which are at risk of bending, abrasion and corroding. Marine fouling creates extra difficulties in maintaining the technical lifespan. All these loads also create synergy effects that can further accelerate degradation. Therefore, new test methods are required that can capture these synergy risks, and test/validate materials and surface protection for the right degradation mechanisms.

The new test method that is being developed creates a significant improvement compared to the current incomplete process for material selection and validation. The work is done together with research and innovation partners, technology developers and actors in the supply chain and validation from Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Italy.

MORE's methodology integrates the functionality from small-scale tests all the way up to full-scale devices. This strategy is expected to directly contribute to solving the challenges in the Ocean Renewable Energy (ORE) sector and make a significant change in the reliability, performance, predictability of service life and longevity of their equipment.

In memory of Clemens Elster

The Conference is dedicated to the memory of our outstanding colleague and highly respected and beloved friend Clemens Elster. A "Best presentation award" will be given in his name to the most relevant work presented at the Conference.

Clemens worked in the fields of applied mathematics and statistics and their applications in metrology after he joined PTB in 1994. He led the PTB working group on "Data analysis and measurement uncertainty" from 2004 to 2025. His wide expertise led to many successful cooperations with colleagues all over PTB, as well as many international collaborations on fundamental issues of uncertainty evaluation and related applications. He was a member of the JCGM Working Group on the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (JCGM-WG1:GUM) for many years and a co-initiator of the MATHMET conference series in 2010 that served as a nucleus of the current EMN Mathmet. We will deeply miss his scientific contributions and the discussions with him as well as his personal support and advice. Our thoughts are with his family.
