Camera measurements

Camera measurements

Picture-quality measurement of still and video cameras; a measurement of increasing importance in today’s society.

Camera type that can be measured.
Image: Anders Djupsjöbacka

Surveillance cameras are today becoming an increasingly common feature in our outdoor and indoor environments. Being able to quickly get a clear picture of what is happening is essential for a camera operator to be able to intervene correctly in case of an unexpected event. For example, one can observe:

• what is in a track area

• how severe a traffic accident really is

• what is burning and how serious the fire is.

In these cases, the image/video is the main means of information.

Common requirements for a surveillance camera:

  • The camera must be able to withstand strong sunlight and dark night without being dependent on external light sources (e.g., street lighting)
  • The camera must be able to handle high optical dynamics in a single image
  • The camera must be able to operate in the NIR range (700 - 1000 nm)
  • The camera must be able to take both still images and video under these conditions.

RISE's lab offers:

  • Measurements at long distances ~ 100 m with maximum optical zoom
  • Measurements in darkroom (IR) at medium distances (~ 50 m)
  • Measurements in labs with customized test boards and measurement setups.

Measurements and qualifications critical to operations

Calibration

Minor deviations or quality deficiencies in products, services, processes or measuring instruments can cost enormous amounts in the form of money, reputation and lost business if not detected in time. RISE services can also create more business opportunities if you want to reach new markets. With unique breadth, strong reputation and advanced expertise and testing equipment, RISE is the natural partner for testing, inspection, certification and calibration.

When governing bodies carry out inspections, or when products must be developed or produced on a large scale, quality assurance and additional peace of mind can be ensured by having a state-owned, well-known and highly credible independent partner.

Several of our experts are on standards committees, many of them working with their own research projects. In some areas, RISE is a world leader, such as in the calibration of impulse voltage and HVDC (high-voltage, direct current). We also have incomparable skills in fire safety testing, are alone in issuing the P-mark for wet rooms and are now developing a unique testing environment that will be at the forefront of cybersecurity.

Incomparable range

No one else in the market has a wider range of tests, inspections, certifications, and calibrations.

“In the vast majority of cases you gain access to the services you need under one roof,” says Petra Lantz, who heads the calibration unit at RISE.

This type of convenience and administrative overview is of great benefit to many businesses, but above all when several different regulations, industry requirements and customer requirements must be met, often in a range of product categories.

“Being able to conduct checks and get the necessary certificates with a single operator makes everything so much smoother and also saves time,” says Dag Sjöholm, research and business developer at RISE.

“You also avoid a lack of uniformity in documentation. There are quite large differences between how results and conclusions are presented, particularly down in Europe."

All RISE calibration clients also have access to a complete measuring instrument register where they can enter all their measuring instruments, along with their own internal calibrations, together with calibration certificates, manuals, documents and evaluations.

Certification of Cybersecurity in connected consumer products

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Certifications of Cyber Security for Consumer Internet of Things Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

RISE offers testing and certification of IoT devices according to cybersecurity requirements from the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) and the Swedish Theft Prevention Association SSF‎.

Purpose/Benefit:

IoT devices are consumer products that anyone can have in their home and that can connect to the internet. Examples include smart TVs, home assistants, smart speakers, connected household appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines, connected alarm systems, digital door locks, smoke detectors or baby monitors.

These products have become part of our daily life and although they help us in many daily routines, they can compromise our privacy and security if not designed correctly. Security standards such as ETSI EN 303 645 and SSF 1120-1 contain requirements on cybersecurity aspects that the product needs to meet, ensuring a higher level of security.

With the increasing use of internet-connected products in the home, the likelihood of cyber-attacks is increasing. It is important that the product is developed and tested correctly to withstand such attacks. The ETSI EN 303645 standard defines the basic requirements for IoT products throughout the product life cycle such as the design, development, manufacturing, use and maintenance phases.

Testing IoT devices against the ETSI EN 303645 standard assesses whether the product meets the general cybersecurity requirements of the standard and testing against the SSF 1120-1 standard tests whether the product can withstand an attack through penetration testing.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The evaluation is based on methods accredited by Swedac for the standards:

  • ETSI EN 303 645
  • SSF 1120-1

The test against the standard is advantageously complemented by a penetration test that RISE can offer as a separate service. Here you find our penetration test offer.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The results of the RISE evaluation are compiled in an accredited RISE report.

Why is cybersecurity important for IoT devices in the home?

Cybersecurity is critical for IoT devices because they collect and store personal information about users. If they are not adequately protected, they can be vulnerable to cyber-attacks that could lead to intrusion, data theft or unauthorised control of the device.

What testing is required to certify IoT devices to cybersecurity standards?

Tests to certify IoT devices include assessing the device's resistance to attacks, which is done by testing against standards such as ETSI EN 303 645 and SSF 1120-1, as well as penetration testing to identify vulnerabilities.

Instrument: Not applicable

What is the difference between ETSI EN 303 645 and SSF 1120-1 standards?

ETSI EN 303 645 is a European standard that defines basic cybersecurity requirements for IoT products throughout their lifecycle. As SSF 1120-1 is based on ETSI EN 303 645, they are very similar, but a major difference is that some requirements have been added on how to perform penetration testing.

How can I get help in improving the cybersecurity of IoT devices?

RISE offers testing to ensure that the IoT device meets the cybersecurity requirements of both ETSI EN 303645 and SSF 1120-1 standards.

Are we going in the right direction?

Small town

Trade, communications, contracts and finances; all rely fundamentally on quality-assured measurements. RISE has initiated the development of same level quality assured measures for climate and as we already have for the meter and kilogram.

The climate is a hot topic, but complex. Several attempts to measure carbon footprint and green investment haven fallen short to reach a more climate smart and social sustainable society. A key drawback is that they are based on statistically aggregated data without valid and reliable measurements, which limits the possibility to support the needed change.

– With measurements that break silos – between societies as well as between local and global – there are great possibilities to take steps and develop measurements associated to our climate, and in turn, maneuver to a more climate smart and more socially sustainable society, says William P. Fisher, Jr., senior researcher at RISE.

A common language

RISE has analysed of one of the world’s largest carbon and greenhouse gas emissions data sets. Our goals were to demonstrate the value and viability of metrologically-attuned approaches to the data. If contributions to effective climate action could be measured, we can achieve new products and services in climate steering.

– It's about finding a common language, units and scales that ensures that we manage what we intend to. Not being limited by the way measurements are constructed today, says Charlotta Möller, project manager at RISE. When continuing analysing the climate data, we would encourage a broader perspective on the possible solutions to enable a more climate smart and socially sustainable society

Beyond the climate data

A climate smart and more socially sustainable society goes, of course, beyond analyses and measures of climate. RISE apply methodologies to ensure measurement quality in broader scope, and in turn provide measures for e.g., quality of life for individuals and for the society.

– Some of the work we are doing are groundbreaking in this field enabling us to take an international leading position to think global and act local. In this spirit, we look forward to engaging soon in productive collaborations with any and all who are interested, says Jeanette Melin, researcher at RISE.

Spinnability evaluation of new polymer materials

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Spinnability evaluation of new polymer materials Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

RISE in Mölndal conducts research and development of textile fibres, with a special focus on material transition for a sustainable development. Melt spinning poses certain requirements on the material, including high temperature stability and suitable flow properties. We can evaluate the spinnability of newly developed materials.

Purpose/Benefit:

Melt spinning is the most commonly used industrial fibre spinning method. It’s great advantage is that the method requires only heat, no solvents, to transform polymers into a melt which can be extruded and drawn into thin fibres.

Globally, there is at present a rapid development of thermoplastics from biobased and recycled feedstocks, and consequently melt spinning will be increasingly useful to produce environmentally sustainable textile fibres.

The fibre spinning expertise RISE can support material producers by performing evaluation of the spinnability of new polymer materials. This evaluation requires only small amounts of polymer (approx. 100 grams) and is suitable also for R&D materials.

If the material is found to have good spinnability, larger scale trials and pilot fibre production can be carried out in our equipments for lab-scale and/or semi-industrial fibre spinning.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Several material properties are relevant for spinnability, and our evaluation includes characterisation of:

  • Degradation temperature, using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)
  • Melting point and degree of crystallinity, measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)
  • Composition analysis, for example by FTIR
  • Flow properties (shear viscosity and extensional viscosity) as a function of shear rate and temperature, as measured in a capillary rheometer (Netzsch RH10)
  • Melt strength as a function of take-up rate, measured in a capillary rheometer
  • Small scale extrusion of monofilaments, in capillary rheometer
  • Mechanical characterisation of fibres, by tensile testing

Measurement Quality in Laboratories SS-EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018

-

The title of the standard is "General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories," but ISO/IEC 17025 is much broader than that and has been very useful. Based on the standard, we address the entire chain in ensuring measurement quality.

In addition to the requirements in ISO/IEC 17025, which we review "cover to cover," we also address the latest updates to regulations, EA documents, and guides, and make small deep dives into important, somewhat complex, and perhaps not entirely obvious topics such as the calculation of measurement uncertainty. An important section is also the internal and external quality control applicable in several areas. Course documentation is available to you digitally.

This is a course both for those who already work in an accredited laboratory and want to refresh and increase their knowledge of the application of ISO/IEC 17025, and for those who are relatively new to the field.

Measurement of biogenic content in materials based on C 14 content

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Measurement of carbon 14 (C 14) Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

There is currently a transition from fossil-based materials to products based on renewable materials. This transition has led to a need to control the proportion of a material that comes from renewable sources, i.e. is biogenic. We can offer C 14 / Carbon 14 analysis of various materials such as fuels, plastics and chemicals.

Purpose/Benefit:

As one of the few commercial laboratory in Europe, we have the opportunity to offer accredited C 14 analysis for determination of fossil / biogenic content. To measure a materials biobased content, the only general way is to measure the proportion of the sample's carbon consists of the isotope C 14, i.e. the ratio of the radioactive and stable isotopes of carbon. The method is also suitable for determining C-14 when isotope-labeled substances are used in tracer experiments, for example in studies of drug metabolism. In addition to the analysis service itself, we can also assist with guidance and problem solving.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The sample is incinerated and the formed carbon dioxide is collected. The content of 14C16O2 is determined in an IR spectrometer with extreme sensitivity and selectivity.

The measurement is performed according to ASTM D6866, with the modification that we use an IR technology (Saturated Cavity Ringdown - SCAR) instead of one of the methods mentioned in the standard.

About the method: http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/adpr.202000069

The work include both accredited and non-accredited testing methods. The scope of accreditation is available upon request – please feel free to contact us for more information.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Written report in Swedish or English.

Delivery time:

About 10 business days.

What is the carbon-14 method used for?

The carbon-14 method is used to measure how much of a material comes from renewable, bio-based sources. It is an essential method for companies wishing to demonstrate sustainability, comply with environmental legislation and obtain certification for bio-based materials. With C-14 analysis, companies can demonstrate that their products contain a high proportion of bio-based raw materials, thus reducing their carbon footprint.

What materials can be tested using the carbon-14 method?

The carbon-14 method can be used to analyse fuels, plastics and chemicals.

Instrument: Not applicable

How does carbon-14 (C14) method work?

Carbon-14 analysis involves burning the sample and collecting the carbon dioxide (14C16O2). The carbon-14 content is then measured with extreme selectivity and sensitivity using an IR spectrometer (Saturated Cavity Ringdown - SCAR). This is done according to a modified version of ASTM D6866 to ensure the highest precision.

Why should I choose RISE for carbon-14 analysis?

We are one of few laboratories in Europe offering accredited carbon-14 analysis, which means that the analysis meets high quality standards and can be used to prove the use of renewable materials.

Failure investigations of pipes and fittings of plastics and metal

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Failure investigations of pipes Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Take advantage of experience of failures in your pipe system. Gain knowledge so that you do not repeat old mistakes and use bad design solutions. In addition, you need to know the status of your pipe system, so you can assess when different parts need to be replaced.

Purpose/Benefit:

Gain knowledge about the causes of failures in your pipe system. The knowledge is useful to improve the pipe system, find out the status of your pipe system or determine which party caused the failure. A failure investigation is about finding out if the cause is due to poor design solutions, defective components, installation errors, external damage, or age. Failures in pipe systems are often related to joints between pipes and pipe parts but can also be due to that the pipes are worn out. Cast iron pipes are exposed to corrosion and after many years of operation, the material thickness can become very thin locally. Polymers in plastic pipes also age and can degrade after long-term usage.

Knowledge gives you the opportunity to improve your pipe system, by being able to make better choices when parts are to be replaced or the system is to be expanded. By gaining knowledge about the status of the pipe system, you can better plan your maintenance and replace components in time. Often the purpose of a failure investigation can be to clarify the issue of liability. RISE performs independent failure investigations of pipes and fittings made of plastics and metal.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Initially, we compile the information about the failure that the customer has. This concerns how the component had been installed in the pipe system, position of leakage, make, operating conditions, age and any protocols kept during installation. After that an ocular inspection follows and possibly a pressure test if we need to determine the position of the leakage.

Then a specific investigation is initiated related to the type of component and failure. Is there a standard that the component should have met upon delivery? We assess whether the component met current requirements and specifications upon delivery. This often means that we measure the component geometrically and take out test specimens to do destructive testing. When welded joints are investigated, it is often also a question of destructive testing, but analysis of fracture surfaces with a microscope can also be considered.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Conditions and conclusions of our investigation are compiled in a written report.

We also help with full-scale printing at our customers. Over the years, we have developed a large number of analysis methods based on advanced image analysis technology for measuring print quality, which we combine with sophisticated characterization of the substrate's properties. We can measure substrate properties such as:

  • Topography
  • Absorption
  • Compressibility
  • Coating layer variation
  • Optical properties

These properties are used to be able to quantify properties that affect print quality and are applicable to both conventional and digital printing techniques for paperboard, paper and corrugated cardboard. We have extensive experience in predicting printability by measuring material properties on unprinted material and then filtering and combining these results.

Examples of important print quality properties we measure that affect print quality:

  • Print mottle
  • Missing dots
  • Uncovered areas
  • Print sharpness
  • Gloss variation

We are happy to help with troubleshooting, such as what a certain print defect depend on. We often use light microscopy as a first aid.

We can also develop tailor-made analysis methods for implementation in the customer's own lab.
