Carbonation-based Carbon Capture and Storage

Carbonation-based CCS
CO2 reactor in place in the laboratory

Carbon capture and storage with alkaline-rich materials

Sweden has set a goal to reach zero-net greenhouse gas emissions by 2045, and thereafter achieve net negative emission of CO2. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) has an important role to play in meeting this goal. Carbonation-based CCS wherein alkaline materials are converted to thermodynamically stable carbonates is globally considered the safest CCS technology. However, low reactivity of feedstocks leading to high operational costs is the main barrier to the commercialization of this technology.

RISE together with academia and industry are carrying out research to develop cost-efficient carbonation-based CCS systems wherein alkaline-rich materials in pure form or as  industrial residues are  applied for CO2 sequestration.

Microplastics from thermosetting resins

Microplastics from composites
Plastic boats

Microplastics derived from thermoplastics are today a well-known problem. But can thermosetting resins also cause harmful microplastics? In the project Microplastics from thermosetting resins, RISE will examine how composites are affected by UV light, abrasion and leaching, and whether thermosetting resins, can degrade into microplastics.

In recent years, the problem of microplastics has become increasingly aware. Scientific studies show that microplastics can cause damage to the marine environment and that we humans get microplastics in us when we drink water and eat seafood.

Much of the microplastics comes from the large amount of waste in our oceans, where plastics are degraded into smaller and smaller particles and form microplastics. They also come from products such as tires, clothing, cosmetics, detergents and body care products. Common to these microplastics is that they come from thermoplastics. While awareness of microplastics from thermoplastics is increasing, so is use of thermosetting resins.

Aim to examine thermosetting resins

Thermosetting composites offer many attractive properties that are suitable for high-performance products in for example the sectors of automotive, marine, transport, aviation and wind power. Thermosetting composites are light in relation to metals, they do not corrode and you have the opportunity to customize properties for different applications. Thanks to its attractive properties, the composite market is expected to grow, despite the risk of negative environmental consequences.

It is therefore of utmost importance to ensure that the environmental impact is minimized or absent when using thermosetting resins and thermosetting composites.

The project Microplastics from thermosetting resins will examine whether external influences such as UV light, abrasion, leaching can produce microplastics. The project will focus thermosetting composites in different environments such as salt water, water and sediment.

The aim of the project is to learn more about the sources of microplastics and minimize the risk of rising fear and suspicion of all plastic materials, even if many of them are shown to be relatively harmless with respect to contaminants.

RISE offers type testing and quality assurance of wood-burning stoves and pellet stoves, as well as inserts, cookers and tiles toves (heavy fireplaces). RISE's combustion laboratory is SWEDAC accredited and offers measurement of performance and emissions as well as safety tests.

Purpose/Benefit:

New fireplaces, inserts and stoves that use solid fuels, such as wood, pellets and briquettes, must now have an energy label. The idea of energy labeling is to make it easier for consumers to make energy-smart choices, so that they can choose an efficient product with low wood or pellet consumption. In addition, in 2020 and 2022, energy labeling was supplemented by an eco-design requirement from the EU with requirements for efficiency and emissions, which will reduce emissions from small-scale biofuel heating. Properly used and with efficient equipment, small-scale biofuel burning can help achieve climate and energy policy goals, since the fuel is renewable.

Testing is carried out in RISE's own combustion lab in Borås by experienced staff. We offer tests that can be used by manufacturers as a basis for CE marking of their products.

Calibration of pyranometer at The National Laboratory

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Calibration of pyranometer at The National Laboratory Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

The National Laboratory for Photometry and Radiometry offers calibration of pyranometers.

Purpose/Benefit:

The national laboratories are responsible for maintaining the national reference standards for each measurement quantity and  spreading metrological competens and traceability to industry and society at large. The national reference standards are the highest level of traceability in Sweden.

A calibration performed at a national laboratory fullfils all typical traceability and accreditation requirements that commonly exist in industry and society at large.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The calibration is performed indoors against a Hg(Xe)-lamp in comparison with a reference pyranometer. The method requires that the device under test and the reference match each other in make and model as closely as possible which puts some restraints on which types of pyranometers the method can be applied to. For example, photo diode pyranometers cannot be calibrated with this method. The calibration is performed at 500 W/m2. The calibration can be performed year round.

A calibration can also be performed directly against the sun as a source in compariton with a reference pyrheliometer. This method does not have the same restrictions on matching models. It does require a sunny and cloudless day during a time of year when the sun is high enough in the sky.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The calibration results are reported in a digital calibration certificate in Swedish or English which states that the calibration was performed at a national laboratory.
