Silva develops gear for running and outdoor adventures.

Silva strengthens its chemical management with support from the Chemicals Group

When regulations change rapidly, it can be difficult for companies to keep up. For the outdoor brand Silva, joining the Chemicals Group at RISE provided both expertise and structure. The result is a more systematic approach to chemicals that supports sustainability while also strengthening competitiveness.

Silva designs and manufactures compasses, headlamps, and running gear such as vests, backpacks, and poles. Together with Primus, they are part of Primus-Silva Sweden AB, with products used by recreational users and professional adventurers worldwide.

When in-house expertise isn’t enough

Few companies can have all the expertise they need internally—especially in areas where rules and requirements evolve quickly, such as chemical management and legislation. For Silva, this was a challenge.

– We didn’t have enough in-house expertise in chemicals and legislation, so we knew we needed external support. A recommendation from another Chemicals Group member company led us to the network, says Emma Gustafsson, Product Developer at Silva.

We have benefited greatly from support with product testing, interpreting third-party test results, and being able to consult a panel of experts

Support that became part of everyday work

This collaboration has gradually built both knowledge and clear routines. What once felt complex and time-consuming has become more manageable.

– The support with product testing, interpreting results, and quick feedback from experts has been very valuable. So too have the chemical guide, suggested contract templates, and regular legislative updates—such as when new SVHC substances are added, explains Emma Gustafsson.

These updates have made it easier to act in time when new requirements arise and have given Silva greater control over its chemical management.

A clearer structure

Today Silva’s chemical work is more systematic. The company has implemented its own RSL (Restricted Substances List), introduced chemical contracts with suppliers, and developed a clearer testing process.

– We’ve strengthened our internal knowledge, improved processes, and established our RSL and supplier contracts. We’ve also shared knowledge with suppliers and expanded our testing, says Staffan Till, Sustainability Manager at Primus-Silva AB.

Insights that strengthen both sustainability and competitiveness

The collaboration has given Silva better oversight of legislation and enabled more long-term sustainability work.

– We now have greater insight into both existing and upcoming legislation. This has strengthened our ability to stay ahead while also improving competitiveness. By developing a more systematic and reliable control of production, we can contribute to higher quality, reduced risks, and a more sustainable business, says Staffan Till.

A foundation for the future

The accumulated experience has created a solid foundation for Silva’s future development and highlighted the value of having access to the right expertise to act long-term.

– Access to expert knowledge and networks has been invaluable in understanding complex chemical issues and enabling us to act proactively, concludes Staffan Till.
