Reuse and repair in the furniture industry

For circular furniture flows to work in practice, more is required than good intentions. It is about creating the right conditions for information, quality, business models, and traceability throughout the entire furniture lifecycle.

Circular strategies in the furniture industry only become profitable when the right conditions are in place. Many organizations get stuck in the same challenges—from design and traceability to business models and verification.

Five things that need to be in place

We help you identify where the value lies and how to build circular flows that work in practice.

Design for Multiple Life Cycles

Circularity begins in product development. Furniture needs to be designed for long service life, easy repair, disassembly, and upgrading. We help you develop solutions where standardization, modularity, and material choices strengthen both sustainability and business value.

Traceability

For furniture to be reused, information must follow the product. Individual-level labeling, product data, and digital product passports create trust and make it possible to assess quality, repairability, and reuse value over time.

The Right Business Model

Reuse requires more than good intentions—it requires business logic that works in practice. We help you develop circular business models that are viable and scalable.

Testing and Verification

Reused furniture must be just as safe to buy as new furniture. In the furniture testing testbed, we can test furniture and related products against more than 50 different standards and are often involved in certification according to TMF’s Möbelfakta. Read more.

Systems Thinking

Circular flows require the right competence and the right systems. We support you in managing data, meeting new regulations, and building IT structures that enable traceability, interoperability, and long-term business value.

Knowledge bank – Circular furniture flows

Since 2017, RISE Research Institutes of Sweden has collected and created knowledge about circular furniture flows in broad collaboration with the industry. This has resulted in practical tools, in-depth analyses, and concrete methods that are freely available for you to access.

Tools

  • LCC tool – compare lifecycle costs for purchasing new, leasing, and reuse (in Swedish)
  • Traceability data – a tool for managing product information in circular flows (in Swedish)
  • Climate figures – for calculating and communicating the climate effects of reuse (in Swedish)
