Meet our coworkers: Karin Östergren

04 July 2023, 10:09

Next person in the article series "Meet our coworkers" is Karin Östergren, Senior Scientist within the unit Sustainable consumption and production.

Hi Karin! Hi Karin! Would you like to describe what your field is about and what your most important questions are?

"Everyone has the right to healthy and tasty food, and the food of the future needs to be sustainable. To have the opportunity to contribute with research that  may make a difference in this field is what gets me to work every day! My background is a  Master in Biotechnology, a PhD in Food technology and engineering at Lund University and  added to that more than 20 years of experience at RISE in the in the field of sustainable food consumption and production. I am especially passionate about how we can use new technical solutions to solve sustainability challenges, but also about how we can work smarter based on the knowledge and experience we have together. For me, it is of central importance that the research carried out  always should be useful in real life.

Topics of research I am currently involved in:

Food Loss and Waste. Resource efficient food processing has been a topic in most of my projects since I started at RISE  for more than 20 years ago.

How we can better organize our value chains and make them more sustainable through technological and social innovation (FAIRCHAIN). How, for example, can a smart “Wild berry app” contribute to new sustainable and fairer value chains?

How to understand and work together, academy and industry,  to achieve a sustainable transition of the food system. Linked to this challenge I have the privilege of leading the FINEST project in collaboration with a great team of researchers and experts from different disciplines and representatives from the food sector."
