Project Overview

PREMA-HEAPS is an ambitious initiative centered around improving the performance, reliability, and adoption of heat pumps. The project explores three key areas:

  1. Machine Learning for Optimization: Leveraging machine learning, we aim to predict failures and identify sub-optimal performance in heat pumps, enabling efficient and proactive maintenance.
  2. Addressing Measurement Uncertainty: We examine how uncertainties in heat pump data impact the reliability of fault detection algorithms, with the goal of mitigating their effects.
  3. Knowledge Exchange: As part of the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Heat Pumping Technologies Collaboration Programme (HPT TCP), the project facilitates knowledge-sharing globally, ensuring that findings benefit not just Sweden but the international community.

The ultimate objective is to advance predictive maintenance technologies, ensuring heat pumps operate more efficiently and reliably.

The Inspiration Behind PREMA-HEAPS

The project idea was inspired by a pressing need: enhancing the reliability of heat pumps amid their growing global adoption. Unexpected breakdowns and performance inefficiencies are common challenges in heat pump systems, and addressing these is vital for achieving the IEA's ambitious targets outlined in its Net Zero by 2050 Roadmap (2021).
According to the roadmap, heat pumps are expected to meet 55% of building heating demands by 2050, requiring an estimated 1.8 billion units globally. Optimizing their reliability and efficiency is, therefore, crucial to ensuring sustainable growth in this sector.

Targeted Outcomes and Beneficiaries

Our team is working toward developing advanced algorithms that:

  • Predict and prevent system failures,
  • Minimize energy wastage, and
  • Ensure smoother, more efficient operations.

These advancements will directly benefit industries reliant on large-scale heat pump installations, utility companies aiming for energy efficiency, and researchers working on sustainable heating technologies.

Industry Collaboration: A Key Driver of Success

Collaboration with industry partners is a cornerstone of PREMA-HEAPS. Our consortium includes CLIMACHECK, a leader in Automated Fault Detection and Diagnostics (AFDD); Vasakronan, one of Sweden’s largest real estate companies; and Enrad, a prominent Swedish heat pump manufacturer. This partnership ensures that our research remains grounded in practical, real-world applications and that the solutions we develop are easily adaptable for the industry.
