Härryda Municipality is one of 48 Swedish cities that, within the initiative Climate Neutral Cities 2030, are working together with several national government agencies and Viable Cities to lead the way in the climate transition. Viable Cities' mission is Climate Neutral Cities 2030 with a good life for all within the planetary boundaries.
The cities have committed to testing new solutions and ways of working, to learning from one another and to working toward the mission: creating cities that function well for the people who live in them, that are good for citizens’, businesses’ and society’s economies — and — that are good for the climate. This is not an easy task, and there is no single answer for how it should be done. Large changes across society are therefore required for us to meet the climate targets and save the planet. Doing what we have always done is no longer an option; we must work in entirely new ways.
RISE is contributing to Climate-Neutral Härryda 2030 with expert support, process facilitation and innovation management.
The purpose of the Climate Contract 2030 is to accelerate cities’ climate transition in line with Agenda 2030 and the stated mission, while improving quality of life for city residents and strengthening Sweden’s competitiveness in the climate domain. Signing the Climate Contract means adopting a higher ambition for sustainable urban development than that set out by the national climate policy framework. This elevated ambition is realized through annual steps to promote sustainable urban development with a focus on a just climate transition, resilience and social sustainability, in order to create a good life for all within the planet’s boundaries.
The Climate Contract 2030 is integrated into municipalities’ and agencies’ ordinary work. It serves as a unifying document and process for cities’ goals, strategies, roadmaps and financing, and identifies gaps in the transition to climate-neutral and sustainable cities with a focus on quality of life.
Härryda Municipality is about to develop an entirely new residential area, Landvetter Södra, with capacity for 25,000 new residents and 15,000 jobs. The municipality’s strategic priorities are therefore largely directed toward the various phases of community development, to both pursue a climate-smart planning and construction phase and to create favourable conditions for a climate-smart area for those who will live and work in Härryda.
A particularly relevant area for Härryda Municipality to develop and expand collaboration in is energy and mobility, with a focus on the electrification transition and sustainable mobility solutions. Within the framework of the municipality’s adopted climate commitments, strategic work is prioritized to reduce climate impact through procurement and measures for a resource-smart municipality. The purchasing and procurement process is a prioritised policy instrument for managing existing and new materials, products and services.
