Electrification for sustainable transport in an industrial port system

The parallel transformation of industry and ports poses challenges for energy supply, charging infrastructure, and transport integration. Oxelösund, with SSAB’s shift to fossil-free production, its port, and energy system, offers an ideal testbed for system-level solutions. This is a feasibility study preparing a system demonstrator.

Objectives and aims

Electrification of the transport sector is crucial to meet the EU’s 'Fit for 55' targets and Sweden’s goal of reducing transport emissions by 70% by 2030. The project aims to:

  • Identify barriers and opportunities for electrified transport and smart charging solutions.
  • Develop business models and incentives to balance investments in charging infrastructure and energy use.
  • Prepare a full-scale system demonstrator for real-world testing

Expected effects and results

The expected outcome of the feasibility study is an assessment of the conditions for a continued project. Key impacts include:

  • Optimization of transport flows through vehicle electrification and smart charging infrastructure.
  • Increased flexibility in the energy system through load balancing and digital control.
  • High potential for replication and scalability to other ports, logistics hubs, and mines.
  • Business models and incentives enabling large-scale investments in fossil-free logistics.

Implementation

The project will be carried out over 8 months and is divided into four work packages:

  1. Mapping of transport and energy needs for the electrification of the port of Oxelösund.
  2. Mobilization of stakeholders and development of business models to enable large-scale implementation.
  3. Technical analysis and development of digital platforms for transport and energy optimization.
  4. Planning of a system demonstrator and strategy for scaling up.
