Acoustic Properties of Medical Devices

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Acoustic Properties of Medical Devices Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

We offer testing and evaluation of the acoustic properties of medical devices. Our measurements and analyses provide a basis for assessing whether the sounds are appropriate for the product’s function and intended use environment, and whether they may pose a risk of disturbance or burden.

Purpose/Benefit:

Sound from medical devices and equipment affects patient safety, the work environment, and the user experience in healthcare and care settings. Functional sounds, such as alarms and monitoring signals, are intended to convey information and support patient safety.

These sounds can negatively affect:

  • the patient’s sense of security and comfort,
  • healthcare staff’s concentration, communication, and fatigue levels.

In addition, the overall acoustic environment is influenced by background noise from, for example, fans, medical pumps, and other technical equipment, which is often perceived as disturbing.

At RISE, we support you in ensuring that sound from medical devices contributes to patient safety, a good working environment, and better user experience. Through our measurements and assessments for clinical and care-near environments, you receive a basis for developing both the product’s function and the overall acoustic environment in healthcare.

In our acoustic laboratory, we carry out independent testing and measurements of medical devices, and we also perform measurements and assessments in real clinical and care-near environments to provide you with a complete picture of the acoustic environment.

In addition to objective measurements, we can conduct listening tests and user-centered evaluations to assess how sound is perceived and how it affects healthcare staff and patients – giving you a basis for developing safer and more user-friendly products as part of risk management, usability, and product development.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

We measure and evaluate according to established methods and standards for sound, vibration, usability, and safety. The method is adapted to the product’s intended use, risk profile, and regulatory context – from early product development to verification, risk assessment, and documentation prior to certification or market access.

Depending on the question at hand, the work may include
•    measurement of the product’s sound power level, sound pressure level at the patient or caregiver position, and vibration emission
•    evaluation of alarm signals’ audibility and suitability for the intended environment
•    verification of sirens and alarm devices against applicable regulatory requirements.

Where relevant, we use established measurement methods, standards, and regulations, for example ISO 11201, ISO 3744, ISO 24501, EN 1789, relevant parts of the IEC/EN 60601 series, and VVFS 2003:29.
Measurements can be carried out both in a controlled laboratory environment and in real-use settings, such as ambulances, incubators, or other care-near environments. In this way, the results can be adapted to the product’s actual use and provide a relevant basis for product development, verification, risk assessment, or documentation.
The goal is to ensure that the products support a safe and appropriate sound environment, without unnecessarily burdening patients, staff, or users.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Our standard deliverable is test reports (in Swedish and/or English), tailored to regulatory and technical needs. If required, we can also provide statements, assessments, or supporting technical documentation and certification processes, depending on the scope of the assignment and the agreement.

We can also provide supporting material for CE marking under the MDR, as well as technical documentation and risk and usability analyses where sound and acoustic aspects are included.

Evaluation of cybersecurity standard ISA/IEC 62443-4 for industrial Automation and Control Systems(IACS)

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): ISA/IEC 62443-4 for industrial Automation and Control Systems, IACS Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

RISE performs accredited testing and evaluation of cybersecurity for IACS components. Cybersecurity testing is conducted according to the product parts of the IACS based on 62443-4 standards, SS-EN IEC 62443-4-1 and SS-EN IEC 62443-4-2.

Purpose/Benefit:

The standard consists of two core parts that together address both the development process and the technical security requirements for industrial components.

Part 1: Swedish Standard SS‑EN IEC 62443‑4‑1

Security for industrial automation systems – Part 4‑1: Secure product development lifecycle requirements

This part defines the requirements for designing, implementing, verifying, maintaining, and supporting a product throughout its entire lifecycle. It covers areas such as security management, requirements specification, secure design and implementation, verification and validation, vulnerability and update management, and security guidelines.

Part 2: Swedish Standard SS‑EN IEC 62443‑4‑2

Security for industrial automation systems – Part 4‑2: Technical security requirements for IACS components

This part defines technical security requirements for four categories of components:

  • Software applications
  • Embedded devices
  • Host devices
  • Network devices

Key requirement areas include identification and authentication, access control, system integration, data confidentiality, data flow control, event handling, and resource availability.

Why evaluation according to 62443‑4‑X matters

Manufacturers of industrial components want to demonstrate that their products meet international cybersecurity requirements, that their development processes follow best practices according to 4‑1, and that their components fulfil the technical security requirements in 4‑2. An evaluation according to 62443‑4‑X also shows that products can be integrated into secure IACS environments. For customers—especially within critical infrastructure—this reduces both risk and uncertainty during procurement.

How RISE conducts the evaluation

RISE performs evaluations according to ISA/IEC 62443‑4‑X by focusing on the practical cybersecurity requirements for industrial components and how parts 4‑1 (secure development) and 4‑2 (technical product requirements) work together. This provides a clear foundation for understanding which requirements apply and how they are implemented throughout the product lifecycle. For those who want to deepen their knowledge, RISE also offers a course that covers the 62443‑4 series in practice.

How the evaluation benefits you as a customer

  • Clear cybersecurity level — you receive an independent assessment of component security against internationally recognized requirements.
  • Stronger supplier trust — suppliers can demonstrate that their products and processes are reliable.
  • Security by design — the evaluation aligns with industry expectations for products that are secure from the outset.
  • Meets regulatory expectations — procurers and authorities receive the documentation they need to make informed decisions.
Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Evaluation will be carried out in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 and the accredited standards in our laboratories in Borås.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The result of our evaluation is compiled in an accredited report.

Technical service - Initial assessment

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Technical service - Initial assessment Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

In order for your vehicle components to be type-approved, an initial assessment of your quality management system is required. As a Technical Service appointed by the Swedish Transport Agency, RISE helps you ensure that the system meets the authorities' requirements – a crucial step in reaching the market.

Purpose/Benefit:
  • Initial assessment of quality management systems – we review your system to ensure that you meet the requirements for type approval.
  • Quality management system surveillance (CoP) – we follow up and ensure that your system continues to meet the requirements over time.

In addition to this, we also offer testing against standards and support throughout the type approval process. Read more about these services on our related pages below.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):
  1. You contact us and we will go through your needs together and determine which documents and procedures need to be in place.
  2. We will review your quality management system and ensure that it meets the requirements for type approval. If necessary, we will also conduct an on-site inspection.
  3. You will receive a report with the results. If the system meets the requirements, the type approval process can continue – otherwise, you will receive clear recommendations for improvements.
Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The delivery consists of a report that may contain deviations. These deviations are addressed by you before a final report is prepared, which is then used as a basis for the Swedish Transport Agency.

The report serves as a basis for the authority and also contains recommendations for improvements where necessary. If the system is approved, the process continues and RISE follows up with regular monitoring to ensure that the requirements continue to be met over time.
