Failure analyses for applications made of polymers and/or rubber materials

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Failure analyses for polymers and rubber materials Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

When something fails, it may be important to know the cause of the failure in order to avoid the same thing again in the future.

Purpose/Benefit:

By examining the chemical and mechanical influences on the material on which the application is made of, conclusions can be drawn about how the accident happened. We examine very carefully whether the material has been affected by the environment where, for example, temperature, gas and chemicals that the plastic/rubber has come into contact with can cause changes that lead to reduced lifetime and performance. Some chemicals can accelerate or, in turn, trigger a breakdown, everything has to do with the choice of materials.

Understanding what is the underlying cause of a failure can be a great eye opener for the future design or manufacturing of a product. For example, a failure may be caused by the wrong material choice where the lifetime is expected to be higher than it actual is. It may be that the product was originally designed for a particular type of environment but that is latter has been used for other environments where the material has not managed to fulfill its duties. It may also be the case that other parameters around the product have changed during its operating time, e.g. temperature or load.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

A failure analysis is performed in our labs and the approach depends on the specific application. If a detail has been broken, the surfaces of the breakage are visually investigated, this can say a lot about how the failure occurred, whether it was brittle or ductile and where it was initiated. Has the failure occurred fast or took it a long time? Sometimes it may be necessary to also test details that have not failed and try to provoke a similar failure as in the damaged part, this can be done mechanically (a load is placed on the part) or chemically (the detail is exposed to a certain chemical environment). Depending on the application and materials being investigated, the procedure for the failure analysis varies.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The customer receives a report containing the results of the survey and recommendations for the future.

Analysis of cut-out samples of glass fibre reinforced plastic

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Analysis of cut-out samples of glass fibre reinforced plastic Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Cut-out samples can be collected from equipment made from fiberglass reinforced plastic. Examples of such equipment can be scrubbers, chimneys and tanks from the chemical industry, flue-gas cleaning, etc. The more background information available on the current equipment, the more information the analysis of the samples will provide.

Purpose/Benefit:

By analyzing the cut-out sample, much can be said about the condition and status of the equipment, i.e. if there are any warning signs suggesting that the equipment should be replaced in the near future, etc.

By analysis of cut-out samples taken from equipment made of fiberglass reinforced plastic, information is provided about the existing condition of the equipment and whether it may be needed to be replaced or maintained.

Keeping track of the status of the equipment is important from a safety and working environment perspective and it can also provide the opportunity for planning for future operation and maintenance. When should the equipment be replaced with new? How long should it be possible to use the equipment in the current operating conditions, etc.? Is the equipment safe?

An analysis of cut-outs can also be made to check the new equipment to ensure that it complies with the specifications.

We recommend that cut-out analyses are carried out at regular intervals on the same equipment in order to constantly follow up the quality and avoid unexpected and sudden failures.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

At a cut-out analysis, the sample is first investigated by visual inspection, this indicates whether there are large delaminations, blisters or other major defects in the material. After this, a piece of the cut-out sample is being cut, the cross section is sanded and polished and then examined in a light optical microscope.

To further visualize small defects and possible chemical influences such as the diffusion of chemicals into the material, the sample can be stained with a dispersion dye that makes damages visible. The sample is thoroughly investigated with a microscope and any defects and diffusion fronts are detected, see the image at the top.

By burning the cut-out sample, in a high temperature furnace that burns away all the organic matter, the glass fiber content can be calculated. A burn-off also provides information on the types of glass fibres used and the construction of the laminate, such as which layers of woven roving or chopped strand mat are available, etc. This information can be compared to the specification of the equipment when it was built to see if the equipment is actually built up as specified.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Upon completion of the cut-out analysis, a report is delivered with the results and recommendations for the future.

The Charpy-V method tests the impact strength of a material by dropping a pendulum on a test rod of the material. It is also possible to determine whether the fracture was brittle or ductile by examining the fracture surface.

Purpose/Benefit:

The impact toughness of a material describes how well the material can withstand a hastily imposed load or stroke. This can be dependent on many different things, such as for example temperature.

For applications where the material will be exposed to sudden loads, it is important to know the material's impact toughness.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The impact toughness is measured by means of a Charpy-V,  Alpha, type 30 M 401, S No. 10475. (The machine is calibrated at 22 ° C.)

A working partner in order to investigate a products environmental durability and methods to validade its function

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Environmental Testing Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

RISE offers a wide range of services in the area of environmental durability. We have services that support the work during the development process as well as during the last qualification of a product to ensure the correct durability.

Purpose/Benefit:

Environmental durability is a concept relevant to many industries and products and it is wise to include the necessary durability requirements early in the development process. By performing validation tests at the right stage, a good quality of the final product can be ensured and costs associated with defects caused by defects are minimized. RISE can help to create these test environments by offering most of the established environmental durability tests.

With its unique technological width, RISE can offer complete solutions packages with support during several phases during the product development process and
in most technology areas. From our many years of work within the field, the customer can benefit from our experience when performing tests with us. Not least through the possibility of gathering several different sub-tests during more extensive testing with RISE as the single supplier of the results. Resources at the customer are then freed up, which would otherwise be spent coordinating and managing the tests that instead will be handled by RISE.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Mechanical Environmental Durability - Vibration Testing

We vibrate anything, from objects to be transported by road, equipment that is fixed in vehicles to parts of vehicles that are going into space. Large, heavy objects around a ton are tested as well as smaller ones that weigh only a few grams. We can test at frequency ranges from a few Hertz up to 2000 Hertz.

Mechanical Environmental Durability - Shock

Shock testing is used to ensure that a product can withstand a crash in vehicles, transport requirements or normal use where it should be possible to drop the product into the ground while its function should be maintained. Often this type of test is done at the same time as a vibration test.

Climatic Environmental Durability

Ambient temperature and moisture present a constant risk of affecting a products function. RISE has several climate chambers that operates at low and high temperatures and with cycling between these temperatures. In several of the chambers it is possible to run temperature in combination with controlled moisture.

Combined Mechanical and Climatic Environmental Durability

When objects have structural parts of e.g. plastic, it is very important to do combined testing. This is because plastics change their mechanical properties with temperature and / or moisture. RISE has equipment that simulates mechanical stress (vibration, shock) together with simultaneous heat / cooling.

Complex Environmental Durability Testing

It is often insufficient for a product to be tested without being in operation. This means stricter requirements regarding how the test is performed in order for the test to be relevant. RISE has the equipment and ability to build test setups for more complex tests eg. vibration in climate with function monitoring and data logging while the test is run with simultaneous pressure cycling.

Other Environmental Durability Testing at RISE

  • Sun simulation and UV exposure
  • Salt mist
  • Temperature shock
  • Temperature and humidity
  • Condensing water
  • Rain resistance and evaluation of waterproofing
  • IP-classification
  • EMC

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Often results are communicated on an ongoing basis during a test. Sometimes the customer participates during the acctual testing. After a completed test, the results are usually socumented in a technical report. Most of the reports we issue are accredited. The report can, for example, provide the basis for further CE marking.

Climatic Environmental Durability testing: heat, cold, humidity and water effects

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Climatic Environmental Durability Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

In our advanced climatic test lab, we can perform all types of environmental tests, for example temperature chock, moisture, temperature cycling, submersion, splash water test. We offer accredited testing for a large number of standards (IEC, ISO, MIL, ETSI etc).

Purpose/Benefit:

The simplest of our climate simulations are pure temperature cycles which may be sufficient to prove any level of climate.

We can also include and control air humidity. In most cases humidity control is mandatory to achieve, for example, the specified condensation. High air humidity can create catastrophic consequences for polymers and lead to warping or delamination of foils.

RISE climate chambers can generate temperatures from -70 ℃ to +180 ℃ with a controlled humidity between 10 % and 98 %. Each chamber can be programmed with individual temperature- and humidity profiles and monitored to simulate a wide array of natural and artificial weather.

Examples of further tests we perform are sun simulation and UV-exposure, salt fog, IP rating, chemical exposure and mildew.

We help our clients to increase the durability and reliability of their products through customized climate tests and test scenarios.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The tests are performed in climate equipment in our labs. We can also provide temperature tests combined with vibration tests. From time to time we also tailor test methods to the individual needs of the customer. By close collaboration with our internal suppliers of, for example fixtures and workshop services, we solve most issues quickly on site.
