EN 1021 - Fire testing of upholstered furniture

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): EN 1021 - Fire testing of upholstered furniture Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

EN 1021-1:2014 – Furniture – Assessment of the ignitability of upholstered furniture – Part 1: Ignition source smouldering cigarette.

EN 1021-2:2014 – Furniture – Assessment of the ignitability of upholstered furniture – Part 2: Ignition source match flame equivalent.

Purpose/Benefit:

The standards are used to assess the ignitability of material combinations, such as covers and fillings used in upholstered seating, when subjected to a smouldering cigarette and a match flame equivalent as ignition source.

These test methods only evaluate the ignitability of upholstery combinations. To evaluate the burning behaviour, the furniture needs to be tested in full scale with larger ignition sources.

For a upholstered furniture, the Product Safety Act applies and one of the safety risks is fire. According to the Swedish Consumer Agency, upholstered furniture sold to an individual consumer on the Swedish market must be able to withstand a glowing cigarette for a fixed time period without igniting the upholstery. The Agency then refers to the requirements according to EN 1021-1. In public environments, such as cinemas, hotels, restaurants etc., upholstered furniture should at least meet the requirements of both EN 1021-1 and EN 1021-2.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The tests are performed in a test cabinet with a calibrated air flow. Combinations of cover fabrics and filling materials used in upholstered furniture are tested. Cover fabrics can also be tested in combination with a standard PU filling. A steel test rig is mounted with the cover and filling so that a 90º angle is formed between the seat and back. The ignition sources are located in the junction between seat and back.

During the cigarette test the test assembly is not allowed to smoulder after one hour from the beginning of the test. The test assembly is also not allowed to smoulder to the extremities of the specimen.

The test assembly is subjected to a gas flame equivalent to a match flame for 15 seconds. No flaming is allowed to continue for more than 120 seconds after removal of the burner tube.

Prior to testing, all outer coverings that have been chemically treated to reduce their ignitability shall be  subjected to a water soaking and drying procedure, described in Annex D.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

A test report, in Swedish or English, is deliverd with the test results after testing.

Combustible dust analysis

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Combustible dust analysis Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

A dust explosion may occur when an ignitable concentration of fine dust particles dispersed in air comes into contact with an ignition source, which can be a hot surface, static electricity, self-heating material or a naked flame.

Purpose/Benefit:

Determination of explosive characteristics for dusts is vital for many industries to comply with the user directive 1999/92/EC, linked to ATEX. The parameters achieved through testing can be used to dimension vent sizing, to specify maximum surface temperature that may be achieved on equipment to be installed and much more.

RISE have the most well-equipped laboratory in Sweden for analyzing combustible dust, with dedicated test engineers and researchers specialized in fire safety, explosions and risk assessment. We offer a wide range of services to help companies investigate and limit explosion hazards.

Combustible gases and fluids have known explosion properties which are stated in their material safety data sheets, but for dust and powder it is not as simple. Defining the explosive properties is vital to attain a safe plant design and operating conditions.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Modified Hartmann tube:
ISO/IEC 80079-20-2
A yes/no method to determine if the dust is combustible or not. If ignition occurs further testing is recommended.

MIE – Minimum Ignition Energy:
ISO/IEC 80079-20-2, EN 13821
The minimum energy required to ignite an explosive atmosphere. Testing can be performed without increased inductance to simulate common electrostatic discharges or with increased inductance, corresponding to e.g. mechanical sparks or sparks from faulty electrical equipment.

MITdc – Minimum Ignition Temperature of dust cloud:
ISO/IEC 80079-20-2, EN 50281-2-1
The lowest temperature of a hot surface which will ignite an explosive atmosphere. The test measures at which temperature a dust cloud in contact with, for example, a hot pipe, will ignite.

MITdl – Minimum Ignition Temperature of dust layer:
ISO /IEC 80079-20-2, EN 50281-2-1
The lowest temperature where a dust layer resting on a hot surface will ignite. The test simulates dust gathered on equipment, for example, and at which surface temperature the dust will ignite.

pmax – Maximum explosion pressure:
EN 14034-1
The maximum explosion pressure attained in a 20 L sphere. Together with the rate of pressure rise these are essential data to be able to properly dimension vent sizing etc.

dp/dt and Kst – Maximum pressure rise rate and dust explosion constant (severity):
EN 14034-2
An indication of how fast the pressure rises in the 20 L sphere and the corresponding pressure rise in a 1 m3 vessel. This value is the basis for the St-classes.

LEL/MEC – Lower Explosion Limit:
EN 14034-3
Lower explosion limit/minimum explosive concentration of dust which is ignitable in atmospheric conditions.

Test of resistivity:
ISO/IEC 80079-20-2
An indication of the electrical conductivity of the dust. High resistivity equals low conductivity. The risk of accumulating electrostatic charges increases with increasing resistivity.

Fire test according to EN ISO 1182

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Fire test according to EN ISO 1182 Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

EN ISO 1182 - Reaction to fire tests for Products - Non-combustibility test

Purpose/Benefit:

The fire test has been developed for constrution Products wich, whilst not completely inert, produce only a very limited amount of heat and flame when exposed to temperatures of 750º C approximately. The main purpose of the test is to classify a product A1 or A2 according to the European classification system.

To be able to sell a construction product in Europe, the product must be tested, classified and if possible, CE-marked in accordance with the Construction Product Regulation. To meet the technical fire requirements, there are common test methods and a common classification system, EN 13501-1, also called Euroclass. This classification system is used by all EU countries, including Norway and Iceland. In Sweden the Building Regulations, BBR, use the Euroclass system.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

A test specimen is located inside a cylindrical furnace tube at 750 °C. The furnace and specimen temperatures are measured continuously during the test. Potential combustion of the test specimen is registered as temperature rise and/or visible flames. Mass loss of the test specimen is calculated after the test. These parameters are used to decide if the product is non-combustible or not.

Our large test halls – with the names of Faraday and Awitar – has been designed in conjunction with the Swedish automotive industry specifically for EMC testing of vehicles. In addition to testing EMC characteristics of road vehicles, we have substantial experience of testing forest machinery, earthmoving machinery, military vehicle.

Purpose/Benefit:

Vehicles and vehicle components are required to meet legal requirements for EMC according to UN ECE R10 (which replaces 72/245/EEC).

The procedure is significantly different from normal EMC marking, which can be carried out completely by the manufacturer itself.

In this case type approval is required;this is granted by a road transport authority, in Sweden Transportstyrelsen.

RISE is also approved for initial assessment and surveillance audits (CoP) of quality management systems of manufacturer´s within the scope of type approval.

Scope

The UN's vehicle regulation UN ECE R10 concerns safety and makes a distinction between equipment and functions involved in safety systems and the driver's control of the vehicle, and other items such as navigation systems, heating systems and so on. The term "immunity related" functions is used to describe the functions included in a specific list in the text covering the legal requirement.

All other equipment is covered by the "normal" EMC Directive (2004/108/EC), and specific standards are constantly being developed.

Determination of heat production using microcalorimetry

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Isothermal calorimetry - Microcalorimetry Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Isothermal calorimetry, also known as microcalorimetry can be used to study endothermic or exothermic processes. The instrument measures thermal power from a sample and is especially sutiable for slow reactions e.g., curing or self-heating.

Purpose/Benefit:

Microcalorimetry is a direct method to measure release or consumption of heat from a sample. The result can be used to determine reaction kinetics or to estimate a material's propensity for self-heating. Tests can be made in closed ampoules or in ampoules with a controlled environment (humidity, oxygen concentration). The analysis of thermal power can be combined with analysis of gases.

Examples of studies performed by RISE are:

  • Ageing of EPDM
  • Degradation/self-heating of vitamins
  • Self-heating of wood pellets
  • Self-heating of contaminated insulation (lagging fires)
  • Reactivity of plastic materials
  • Phase change materials
  • Determination of heat capacity
  • Oxidiation of oils
  • Self-heating of cutting fluids

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

RISE has two different microcalorimeters: TAM Air and TAM III. If desired, tests can be done in an inert
atmosphere or at different moisture concentrations.

Testing in TAM Air involves placing a small quantity of test material (up to a few grams) into a 20 ml ampoule which is closed and then lowered into one of the instrument’s eight channels. The ampoule is in contact with a heat flow sensor, which also senses the preset temperature in the instrument. Production of heat in the ampoule as a result of oxidation, biological activity or other exothermic process creates a temperature gradient across the sensor, generating a voltage that is directly
proportional to the thermal process occurring inside the ampoule. The method produces time resolved
results.

TAM III is a development of TAM Air. In TAM III it is possible to vary mositure and oxygen concentration in the headspace. It is also possible to perform tests in a 125 ml ampoule.

Tests can be conducted from 10 °C up to approximately 145 °C.
