SS 8760010 - Fire testing of health care textiles, Nursing beds

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): SS 8760010 - Fire testing of health care textiles, Nursing beds Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

SS 8760010:2016 - Healthcare textiles – Nursing beds – Burning requirements for mattresses to be used in high risk Environment (NT FIRE 055)

Purpose/Benefit:

This method evaluates the burning behavior of mattresses intended for special purposes. The standard states the demands for basic fire requirements (flammability, smoke and heat output) of mattresses intended for care of patients who may ignite the mattress on purpose (e.g. mentally ill patients, jail interns etc ).

From a patient safety, and working environment point of view, it is necessary to set fire resistance requirements for nursing beds.

During a fire in a hospital ward the mattress is one of the components that constitute the greatest fire hazard because it can develop large amounts of heat and smoke.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The test is performed in accordance with NT FIRE 055. The mattress is placed on a bed frame in metal. The test assembly is placed under a hood (calorimeter) that collects all the smoke produced during the test. The ignition source, which delivers 30 kW heat output, is applied in the middle and on top of the mattress for 120 s. A possible fire in the mattress should have self-extinguished no later than 3 minutes after the burner has been removed.
To simulate arson the mattress is prepared by two incisions in the centre of the mattress cover (perpendicular to each other), so that the mattress core (foam) is directly affected by the flames from the burner.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

After testing, a test report in Swedish or English is delivered with the results.

Linear polarisation (PDP) for determination of corrosion mechanisms

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): PDP for determination of corrosion mechanisms Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Linear polarisation (PDP) is an electrochemical technique used to evaluate several critical phenomena associated to electrochemical processes. Corrosion can be studied with the method to determine properties such as corrosion potential, corrosion rate, polarization resistance, passivation, and pitting potential.

Purpose/Benefit:

PDP is a commonly used electrochemical technique to characterize corrosion properties of metallic surfaces with or without protective coating in environments such as water of different salinity (marine environment), soil or battery electrolytes. It is a fast technique often used as an initial measurement of corrosion rate and the stability of protective coatings and films.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Linear polarization is performed by applying a potential with a constant sweep rate (typically 0.16 mV/s) in the range of ± 250 mV vs the open circuit potential. The direction and interval of the sweep can both be adapted for separate study of either anodic or cathodic mechanisms in detail. The changes in current with applied potential (the shape of the polarisation curve) allows for the determination of the corrosion potential, corrosion current, passivation current and breakdown potential of a passivating coating. For more detailed pitting corrosion investigations, Avesta cell measurements are available.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

A report with results and analysis presented in text and graphs and calculated parameters such as corrosion rate.

Archival permanence and durability – Writing, printing and copying on paper (ISO 11798)

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Archival permanence and durability – Recording on paper (ISO 11798) Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Testing the archival permanence and durability of recording (writing, printing and copying) on paper according to ISO 11798 is one of our specialties. All types of recording are covered, such as writing from pens and stamps, copying from copying machines and printing from printers (laser printers, inkjet printers, and multifunction devices).

Purpose/Benefit:

The need for ISO 11798 arises from the strong Swedish Archives Act and the necessity for information preservation for the future. The Swedish National Archives’ technical regulations (RA-FS 2006:4) align with the Archive Law and require archival permanence for documents to be preserved in archives. Accordingly, ISO 11798 has been implemented as specification requirements in these regulations.

RISE (formerly SP) has been testing the permanence and durability of paper since the early 1900s and subsequently also the writing on paper, focusing on properties crucial for the durability of writing. As new writing and printing methods have been introduced to the market, testing methods have been adapted to evaluate new properties.

Documents with writing, printing or copying that meet the standard’s requirements are permanent, provided they are stored in an archival environment and produced in combination with permanent paper (in accordance with ISO 9706 or ISO 11108) as substrate.

Purpose

The purpose of the standard is to ensure that archival documents are readable and durable both now and in the future. The documents should withstand long-term storage, be able to be copied, scanned, and handled without being destroyed, and endure some exposure to light, water, and heat. Additionally, the writing and printing (and the process of printing for laser printers) must not negatively affect the paper’s strength.

Products tested according to ISO 11798 and meeting the requirements can be certified by RISE.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The permanence and durability of recording on paper produced with writing materials—such as ink from pens and stamp pads—or paper documents produced using equipment like copiers, laser printers, and other types of printers is examined according to ISO 11798. ISO 11798 contains both the testing procedure and requirements that needs to be fulfilled.

The recording is evaluated using various methods, including tensile testing, folding endurance, optical density, color change (for color printers), and abrasion.

The standard specifies requirements in the form of:

  • Appearance of the recording
  • Lightfastness
  • Water resistance
  • Transfer of writing to adjacent documents when stacked
  • Abrasion resistance
  • Heat resistance
  • Effect of writing on the mechanical strength of the paper
  • Effect of the printing process on the mechanical strength of the paper (for laser printers)

The standard also specifies the paper to be used for producing recording (ISO 9706 and ISO 11108).

Accreditation

The testing activities for recording on paper maintain high quality through accreditation according to SS-EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Paper testing – Permanent paper (ISO 9706) and archival permanent and durable paper (ISO 1108)

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Paper testing – Permanent and archival paper (ISO 9706 and ISO 11108) Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

RISE tests paper for long-term storage in archives; permanent paper (ISO 9706) and archival paper (ISO 11108). Paper that meets the standards' requirements can be certified by RISE and be labeled with the mark "Svenskt arkiv". To create archival documents, permanent or archival paper is required along with permanent writing or printing (ISO 11798).

Purpose/Benefit:

When talking about archival documents, we refer to documents that can be stored in protected environments for a long time, probably for hundreds of years. Paper that meets the requirements in ISO 9706 is referred to as permanent paper and ISO 11108 is referred to as archival paper (permanent and durable paper). According to the National Archives' technical regulations (RA-FS 2006:4), the paper for permanent documents can be of both types. Archival documents are produced by combining such paper with a permanent writing and printing. Permanent paper is often used as copying paper, while archival paper, which is stronger and made from rag pulp, is used for important documents such as diplomas and certificates. If the documents are expected to be handled in the future, archival paper should be chosen as it is more durable and withstands significantly more handling than permanent paper.

These two types of papers are distinguished from paper tested according to ISO 20494 where the paper stability is intended for general graphic applications. Such paper is not intended for archival storage, and does not have to be permanent, but rather to be durable during its use when used to produce newspapers, brochures etc.

Purpose

The standards are based on providing permanent paper that can be used in the production of archival documents (if the writing and printing is permanent according to ISO 11798)

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Permanent paper is evaluated according to ISO 9706 and archival paper (which is permanent and durable) is evaluated according to ISO 11108. RA-FS 2006:4 refers to these two standards for paper testing. The testing includes the following test procedures.

pH - cold water extract

Acidic paper deteriorates quickly, so pH is an important parameter to measure in paper. Electrolytes are extracted from the paper in a water solution, and the pH value is then measured on this cold water extract.

Alkali reserve

The formation of acids from air pollutants in the surrounding air or natural ageing is harmful to the paper. Therefore, such paper usually contains some alkaline filler (e.g., calcium carbonate) to prevent acid attacks and neutralize the harmful acids, i.e., the paper has an alkali reserve. The alkali reserve can be measured through a titration process.

Kappa number

The kappa number indicates the amount of oxidizable material, such as lignin, in the pulp. Since such material can discolor and decompose the paper, the aim is to keep the kappa number low. Accordingly, the paper should only contain a limited amount of oxidizable material. For chemical pulps, the kappa number usually ranges between 1 and 100.

Tear strength

Tear strength is a measure of the mechanical strength of the paper and indicates the force (mN) required to tear a piece of paper.

Folding strength

Folding strength is another measure of the mechanical strength of the paper and indicates the strength required to fold a paper strip in a paper folder until it breaks.

Requirements for permanent paper (ISO 9706):

  • pH value: between 7.5 and 10.0
  • Alkali reserve: at least equivalent to 0.4 mol of acid per kg of paper (at least 2% chalk or equivalent)
  • Tear strength: at least 350 mN in the machine and cross direction of the paper
  • Kappa number: less than 5

Requirements for archival paper (ISO 11108):

Archival paper must meet the requirements for permanent paper according to ISO 9706 and additionally;

  • Manufacture: must consist of cotton, hemp, or linen but may contain a small amount of bleached chemical pulp
  • Grammage: at least 70 g/m²
  • Folding strength: at least 2.18 in the machine and cross direction of the paper

Accreditation

The testing activities for permnent and archival paper maintain high quality through accreditation according to SS-EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018.

Certification

Certification of durable paper in accordance with RISE certification rules (SPCR 004).

Archive storage media – Archive boxes, file covers and other enclosures for storage of paper documents (ISO 16245)

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Archive storage media – Boxes, file covers and enclosures (ISO 16245) Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Archive boxes (made of cardboard) and file covers (made of paper) are used for archiving and storing documents. These storage materials are included in the National Archives’ regulations on technical requirements and can be tested according to ISO 16245. The requirements cover strength properties, functionality, and material selection.

Purpose/Benefit:

Archive boxes and file covers can be tested according to ISO 16245. The requirements cover strength properties, functionality, and material selection. It is important that archive boxes and file covers are tested according to this standard to ensure the preservation of documents printed on permanent paper and with permanent writing or printing. However, the storage materials cannot compensate for poor storage conditions.

There is also a desire to be able to label archive boxes and other storage materials with self-adhesive labels that do not fall off over time or become illegible. RISE also performs this testing according to RA-FS 2006:4, appendix 3, for self-adhesive labels. Adhesion is a central part of this testing, and two different types of archive boxes (or other types of storage media) are used in the testing
