EN ISO 5659-2 - Fire testing of products in trains

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): EN ISO 5659-2 - Fire testing of products in trains Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

EN ISO 5659-2 - Smoke generation;Part 2: Determination of optical density by a single-chamber test

Purpose/Benefit:

EN ISO 5659-2, determination of the optical density of smoke produced from a horizontally positioned test specimen subjected to a specific thermal radiation in a sealed chamber. The method is invoked by EN 45545-2 for Products used on trains.

When we take the railway, we assume that the journey will be comfortable and safe. Fire safety is important in order to save lives in the event of an accident. Therefore, all materials and products installed in trains and subways must be fire tested according to EN 45545-2. The system has been developed by Technical Committee CEN/TC 256 ”Railway applications” at the request of the European Commission. The system is based on requirements from EU Directive 2016/797. All contradictory national standards are revoked.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The test is conducted in a sealed chamber. The test sample is placed horizontally and subjected to thermal radiance. When the specimen is subjected to the irradiance it starts to emit smoke which is collected in the chamber. The smokes specific optical density (transparency) is measured with a light source and a photo cell. In the case of doing the toxicity analysis, some of the produced smoke is taken out of the chamber for analysis. Analysis is performed for each of the three irradiance levels and amongst others the following substances can be detected through FTIR analysis: Carbon monoxide, Hydrochloric acid, Hydrogen bromide, Hydrogen fluoride, Hydrogen cyanide, Nitrous oxides and Sulphur dioxide. The method used when measuring with FTIR is EN 17084.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

A test report, in Swedish or English, is deliverd with the test results after testing.

Washing affects textile materials in several ways. The method is used to determine various properties such as dimensional change, wrinkling, seam puckering, general changes in appearance (pilling, fuzziness) after industrial washing.

The method is also used as pre-treatment of materials prior to testing of flammability or mechanical properties.

Purpose/Benefit:

The method simulates professional washing at an industrial laundry.

The washing properties of a textile material are an essential part of the quality experience. By testing these characteristics, it is possible at an early stage to predict what appearance and function will look like after washing.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The method describes washing processes that simulates washing at an industrial laundry.
Eight different washing programs are described.
Wash temperature is 85 ◦C (full load = 20 kg cotton) or 75 ◦C (reduced load = 14 kg synthetic).
A standard industrial detergent is used (pH about 11.3) with or without bleach.
The drying method we can offer is tumble drying at max 80 ◦C.

It is possible to wash and dry at lower temperatures than the above mentioned as we program the washing machine and tumble dryer ourselves.

The method is always used in conjunction with any other test method that evaluates a particular property, e.g. dimensional change (SS-EN ISO 5077).

Determination of dimensional change (in textiles) in washing and drying according to SS-EN ISO 5077 and SS-EN 3759

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Dimensional change according to SS-EN ISO 5077 Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Textile materials that are washed often change shape and size. This change can be both increase in size or decrease in size (shrinkage). The magnitude of this change is crucial to the function of the material.

Purpose/Benefit:

The aim of the method is to determine the dimensional change of textile materials when subjected to washing and drying.

When testing dimensional change in washing and drying, the suitable washing temperature and drying process for the material is checked. This can then be used as a basis for, among other things, care labeling. In case of complaints, it is then possible to check whether the care instructions have been followed.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The material is conditioned in standard climate in our textile lab and 1-3 samples of garments or fabric are measured before and after washing and drying. Dimensional change expressed in % is calculated.

The number of measurements and their position are described in standard SS-EN ISO 3759 (Preparation, marking and measuring of fabric specimens and garments in tests for determination of dimensional change).

Washing and drying is carried out according to, for example, household washing method SS-EN ISO 6330 or industrial washing method SS-EN ISO 15797.

Analysis of solvent residues (NMP, NEP, DMAc, DMF, FA) according to OEKO-TEX

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Analysis of solvent residues (NMP, NEP, DMAc, DMF, FA) in textiles Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

It is important that the textiles on the market are free of harmful and regulated substances. Chemical analysis is a way to gain control over the products' chemical content.

Purpose/Benefit:

Society and consumers set high demands on companies and their products. The legislation also means that you as an actor must have complete information and control over the chemicals in your product. It is especially important with products for children and goods with skin contact, such as clothes and accessories.
Aprotic solvents such as DMFa, NMP and NEP are commonly used in polyurethane coatings (PU coatings) of textiles, gloves and "faux leather". The substances are also used in the manufacture of elastomers such as elastane, as well as in the manufacture of aramide fibres (kevlar). The concentrations can be kept down in the end product, but often occur more or less in the materials.

We help you interpret chemical legal requirements and restrictions that apply to goods made of textile materials and plastics and that are linked to e.g. REACH and POPs. We suggest what analyses you need to do based on legal requirements, but also other specifications such as eco-labels or procurement requirements
