The Certification of Production Process regarding Formaldehyde Emissions and REACH supports production processes for composite wood products. It aims to demonstrate that the manufacturer has the capacity to control the level of formaldehyde emissions from products produced in the certified production process.
Purpose/Benefit:
The REACH regulation, Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 - Registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemicals (REACH), is a European Union regulation aimed at improving the protection of human health and the environment from the risks posed by chemicals. Regarding formaldehyde emissions is the requirement that this shall be under 0.05 ppm.
SPCR 020 applies to production processes where composite wood products such as plywood, oriented strand board, particle board, fiberboard laminated veneer lumber, glulam and other glued timber products are produced.
SPCR 020 not only helps manufacturers fulfill regulatory requirements but also enhances their credibility and commitment to environmental and human health protection.
Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):
RISE performs all test in its own test labs and has a long experience in the field of testing and certification of wood products in general and regarding formaldehyde emissions. RISE is also a third-party certifier and can certify according to U.S. EPA TSCA Title VI Regulation for wood products. Through this, we can coordinate both audits, testing and certification to offer a comprehensive solution for both REACH and U.S requirements.

Are charging stations delivering the right amount of energy? OKQ8 partnered with RISE to verify their charging stations in a unique project.
As a consumer, it is virtually impossible to detect whether a charging station is delivering too much or too little energy. Are you overpaying? Or is the charging station operator losing money on your charging session? For gasoline and diesel pumps, there are legal requirements for regular inspections. An independent entity verifies that the pump delivers the correct amount of fuel.
"Despite the rapid expansion of charging infrastructure, no such requirements exist for charging stations. This means that charging stations can be installed and used for years without any verification that they actually deliver the correct amount of energy. That poses a potential risk to both consumer protection and personal safety," says Magnus Nilsson, unit manager in inspection and calibration at RISE.
Partnered with RISE
OKQ8 is one company taking this issue seriously. Despite the absence of mandatory inspections, they proactively partnered with RISE last year to verify around a hundred of their charging stations.
“This is the first large-scale field inspection of charging stations in Sweden,” says Magnus Nilsson.
Up to 400 kW
During the inspection, RISE engineers compare the amount of energy the charging station reports it has delivered with the actual amount of energy supplied. The measuring equipment, calibrated at the National Laboratory for Power and Energy at RISE, can currently handle charging stations with power outputs of up to 400 kW.
“We’re proud to be part of driving this development forward. Our fuel pumps for liquid fuels are already subject to regular inspections, so for us, ensuring the same level of quality for charging stations is a natural step,” says Christer Karlsson, Project Manager at OKQ8.

Some variations
As expected, the inspections revealed some variations — some charging stations delivered slightly more energy than expected, while others delivered slightly less. However, the deviations were small.
“It was reassuring to see such positive results and to know that customers are getting what they pay for. Most importantly, there were no significant discrepancies. These inspections are crucial for us — without them, we would be operating in uncertainty,” says Christer Karlsson.
Small deviations are expected. All measurements come with inherent uncertainties, and regulations—such as those for gasoline and diesel pumps—specify tolerances that define an acceptable range of variation.
"It would be interesting to conduct additional measurements in winter conditions to study how very low temperatures affect the charging process. Our charging stations are also relatively new — the oldest high-power chargers are about three years old. In the future, it would be valuable to see how aging affects them, as all measuring instruments experience slight drifts over time. However, at this stage, we are not taking any immediate action based on these findings; instead, we are awaiting potential regulatory requirements for inspections," says Christer Karlsson.
"We want well-defined regulations that apply to everyone in the market, making the system both simpler and fairer. It is important that the regulations are stable and predictable, without frequent changes over time. We are used to regulations in the liquid fuel sector, so this is nothing new to us. Of course, there will be some costs involved, both for adapting equipment and for the inspections themselves, but it will be the same for everyone, ensuring fairness," says Christer Karlsson.
He sees independent inspections as a major advantage.
"Having an independent entity like RISE conduct inspections is crucial for building trust with our customers. They recognize the inspection stickers on fuel pumps as a mark of quality, and the same principle applies here. It reassures them that we are delivering exactly what they expect," he says.
Continues expanding
While awaiting official regulations, OKQ8 continues to expand its charging network.
“At OKQ8, our goal is to become climate-neutral while supporting our customers in their own transition. In 2024, we opened more than 120 new charging stations, and our expansion will continue,” he says, adding:
“If we want electrification to progress, we need more charging stations—it’s as simple as that.”
The EMERGE project focuses on emergency preparedness for autonomous passenger ferries and remote operation centres (ROCs). It addresses challenges such as passenger evacuation, man overboard and loss of communication. The project involves RISE, Torghatten and other stakeholders, with the aim of improving safety and operational procedures.

The EMERGE project aims to improve emergency preparedness on autonomous passenger ferries and remote operation centres, namely man overboard, evacuation and loss of communication, from three main perspectives: the ROC perspective, the on-board perspective and the rescue network perspective. This is crucial to ensure the safe operation and acceptance of autonomous vessels (MASS) monitored from remote operations centres (ROC). The goal is to map current emergency procedures, define safety challenges and adapt procedures for autonomous ferries and for interactions between the MASS/ROC system. The project will contribute recommendations for specific training, design of onboard and ROC systems, and rescue organisations, and develop and test prototypes for safety solutions. User-centred design (UCD) will be used to explore requirements and solutions for information sharing, usability and training. The results will improve safety and guide future research.
RISE coordinates the project and is a research partner. Ship operator Torghatten contributes with its concepts and demonstrators. A reference group also contributes to the project.

RISE offers a comprehensive portfolio of battery safety and abuse tests, covering individual battery cells, battery modules and complete battery packs. These tests are tailored to a wide range of applications, including electric vehicles, off-road machinery, industrial equipment and stationary energy storage systems for renewable energy.
Our ISO/IEC 17025 accredited test laboratories use modern testing equipment to guarantee precise and reliable measurement data. We test according to many different international regulations and standards such as GB 38031, GTR No 20, UN 38.3, UN ECE R100 and IEC-EN 62133-1 and 2.

Abuse testing
We perform overcharge tests up to 1200 V, short circuit etc. As these tests can result in thermal runaway with harmful gases, RISE new-built test lab is equipped to this.

The 2-CAP project handles the area of developing a robust automated process for 2-component adhesive. Today, there is a lack of quality-assured automation solutions for resource-efficient and efficient series production adapted to 2C application of adhesive.
2C applications are a strong trend in lightweight design and electrification of vehicles where new concepts are now being developed that require new technical solutions.
The goal of the 2-CAP project is an automatic handling of all parts of the 2C adhesive process to obtain a stable robust process, optimized material consumption and minimized chemical risks for personnel.
Almost all experience in the automotive industry which may be considered leading for high-volume manufacturing, regarding automated adhesive processes, is today based on heat-curing 1C adhesive. For new innovative lightweight designs, which depend on mixing materials (Multimaterial), joining with 2C adhesive is important. Increased strength and adhesion in joints open up the opportunity for new material combinations and a stronger product with a longer lifespan. High-volume manufacturing requires automated application of 2C adhesive and thus ensure products with high quality, short lead times and reduce work environment risks. 2C adhesive has certainly been around for quite some time in hand-held and semi-automatic applications, but has not been applied in the areas and volumes that are now in demand.
A robust automated process for 2C adhesive has great potential to rationalize and make production more efficient, but deep knowledge of the interaction between materials, equipment, application situations and process is required to give Swedish companies the competitive advantage it needs and contribute to a resource-efficient use. The need for generic knowledge is great and central to creating innovative lightweight solutions, reducing material use and unnecessary waste. Automated 2C bonding means that you create less waste that has to be sent for destruction and that the degree of utilization increases.
By developing and describing an automatic handling of all parts in the 2C adhesive process, one can prepare for a rapid introduction and implementation, and central technical support systems for, for example, monitoring and preparation can be identified and developed. A successful project result can in the short term lead to the implementation of robust processes in Swedish industry.
The work in the project takes place within the framework of the sub-programme FFI Cirkularitet within the collaboration Vehicle strategic research and innovation (FFI) financed by VINNOVA.
The project (MAGIC*) aims to provide the vehicle industry with tools in the form of processes, methods, and mechanisms to aid in forensics investigations, and support liability investigations.
MAGIC facilitates more efficient root cause analysis that can lead to faster product updates to address issues, increase trust in vehicle digital forensics evidence, and provide guidance to engineers who want to design vehicles to support future forensics analyses.
Objectives of the project
MAGIC aims to increase confidence in, and streamline handling of, forensic data from vehicles to support the investigations around liability issues in incidents. To this end we aim to:
Develop automotive digital forensics (ADF) solutions that guarantee forensic soundness, enhance the trustworthiness of incident investigations, and identify cybersecurity-related vulnerabilities.
Implement real-time ADF mechanisms to enhance the adaptability of incident detection and protection against cyberattack threats.
Develop adaptive cyber-resilience and assure forensic soundness.
Achieve compliance with, and potentially propose enhancement to, UNECE R155 & R156 and ISO/SAE 21434.
Disseminate knowledge and educate future experts.
Evaluate the feasibility of the proposed ADF solutions for real-world implementations.

EU:s nya regelverk med bland annat CSRD och Taxonomin underlättar för banker och andra investerare att placeras sina pengar hållbart. De ger också bland annat fastighetsbolag krav på rapportering och ökar behovet av kunskap på fastighetsnivå.
RISE kan bidra med forskningsbaserade underlag åt fastighetsägare, banker, försäkringsbolag med flera för att identifiera vilka byggnader som är mer sårbara än andra. Idag saknas lättillgängliga data för dessa bedömningar. Här arbetar RISE tillsammans med flertalet bank- och försäkringsbolag med att forma ett första screeningverktyg för att kunna bedöma sårbarhet i byggnader. Men vi har redan nu kommit en bra bit och åtar oss uppdrag inom området.

As a result of automation, demands for increased production and reduced physical effort for the operator, safety-related electrical control systems (called SRECS) for machines play an increasingly important role in achieving overall machine safety.
This course covers all elements of standard EC 62061:2021, from initial risk analysis to final validation and requirements for any modifications. The documentation structure of the standard is consistent with ISO 13849, but the level of detail differs. Furthermore, we go through the differences in application between the two standards to give the course participant a better knowledge and understanding.
Purpose
The aim of the course is to give the participant a deep technical knowledge of the standard IEC 62061:2021. This standard is machine sector specific within the framework of IEC 61508.
Target group
The course is primarily intended for machine designers, manufacturers and integrators of control systems, but also for other professionals involved in activities such as specification, design and validation of SRECS.
