Climatic Environmental Durability testing: heat, cold, humidity and water effects

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Climatic Environmental Durability Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

In our advanced climatic test lab, we can perform all types of environmental tests, for example temperature chock, moisture, temperature cycling, submersion, splash water test. We offer accredited testing for a large number of standards (IEC, ISO, MIL, ETSI etc).

Purpose/Benefit:

The simplest of our climate simulations are pure temperature cycles which may be sufficient to prove any level of climate.

We can also include and control air humidity. In most cases humidity control is mandatory to achieve, for example, the specified condensation. High air humidity can create catastrophic consequences for polymers and lead to warping or delamination of foils.

RISE climate chambers can generate temperatures from -70 ℃ to +180 ℃ with a controlled humidity between 10 % and 98 %. Each chamber can be programmed with individual temperature- and humidity profiles and monitored to simulate a wide array of natural and artificial weather.

Examples of further tests we perform are sun simulation and UV-exposure, salt fog, IP rating, chemical exposure and mildew.

We help our clients to increase the durability and reliability of their products through customized climate tests and test scenarios.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The tests are performed in climate equipment in our labs. We can also provide temperature tests combined with vibration tests. From time to time we also tailor test methods to the individual needs of the customer. By close collaboration with our internal suppliers of, for example fixtures and workshop services, we solve most issues quickly on site.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

During a test, results are often communicated on an ongoing basis. Sometimes customers participate in the trials themselves. After a completed test, the results are usually summarized in a technical report. Most of the reports we issue are accredited. The report can, for example provide the basis for further CE marking.

Combustible dust analysis

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Combustible dust analysis Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

A dust explosion may occur when an ignitable concentration of fine dust particles dispersed in air comes into contact with an ignition source, which can be a hot surface, static electricity, self-heating material or a naked flame.

Purpose/Benefit:

Determination of explosive characteristics for dusts is vital for many industries to comply with the user directive 1999/92/EC, linked to ATEX. The parameters achieved through testing can be used to dimension vent sizing, to specify maximum surface temperature that may be achieved on equipment to be installed and much more.

RISE have the most well-equipped laboratory in Sweden for analyzing combustible dust, with dedicated test engineers and researchers specialized in fire safety, explosions and risk assessment. We offer a wide range of services to help companies investigate and limit explosion hazards.

Combustible gases and fluids have known explosion properties which are stated in their material safety data sheets, but for dust and powder it is not as simple. Defining the explosive properties is vital to attain a safe plant design and operating conditions.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Modified Hartmann tube:
ISO/IEC 80079-20-2
A yes/no method to determine if the dust is combustible or not. If ignition occurs further testing is recommended.

MIE – Minimum Ignition Energy:
ISO/IEC 80079-20-2, EN 13821
The minimum energy required to ignite an explosive atmosphere. Testing can be performed without increased inductance to simulate common electrostatic discharges or with increased inductance, corresponding to e.g. mechanical sparks or sparks from faulty electrical equipment.

MITdc – Minimum Ignition Temperature of dust cloud:
ISO/IEC 80079-20-2, EN 50281-2-1
The lowest temperature of a hot surface which will ignite an explosive atmosphere. The test measures at which temperature a dust cloud in contact with, for example, a hot pipe, will ignite.

MITdl – Minimum Ignition Temperature of dust layer:
ISO /IEC 80079-20-2, EN 50281-2-1
The lowest temperature where a dust layer resting on a hot surface will ignite. The test simulates dust gathered on equipment, for example, and at which surface temperature the dust will ignite.

pmax – Maximum explosion pressure:
EN 14034-1
The maximum explosion pressure attained in a 20 L sphere. Together with the rate of pressure rise these are essential data to be able to properly dimension vent sizing etc.

dp/dt and Kst – Maximum pressure rise rate and dust explosion constant (severity):
EN 14034-2
An indication of how fast the pressure rises in the 20 L sphere and the corresponding pressure rise in a 1 m3 vessel. This value is the basis for the St-classes.

LEL/MEC – Lower Explosion Limit:
EN 14034-3
Lower explosion limit/minimum explosive concentration of dust which is ignitable in atmospheric conditions.

Test of resistivity:
ISO/IEC 80079-20-2
An indication of the electrical conductivity of the dust. High resistivity equals low conductivity. The risk of accumulating electrostatic charges increases with increasing resistivity.

Cascading Natural Hazards: Visualizing, Learning and Understanding

CAZULU
Screenshot of Cazulu project visualization

In this project we wanted to explore when, where and how cascading natural hazards occur - and why. What are the societal consequences of flooding, erosion, landslide? How can we visualise the effects and impact of these cascading natural hazards; and how can we communicate this in a better way?

Project member

Division: Division Digital Systems and Societal Transformation
SGI

The aim of the project was to develop methods to analyze and understand cascading natural hazards and their multiple effects and impacts. We designed scenarios and developed visualisations of the natural and societal consequences in a Swedish watercourse. We collaborated with secondary school students and additional public stakeholders.

A motivation for the project was to investigate how we can communicate and visualize nature-related information in a better way and change perspectives. We wanted to create commitment, interest and a sense of what is possible to achieve and thus counter and prevent feelings of helplessness.

On the RISE end of the project, the practical outcome was a web-based visualization which was designed around so called scrollytelling and which was used as an opportunity to explore the opportunities and challenges of using prominent digital tools for image generation to visualize natural events and hazards.

Participants from RISE included Arianit Kurti, Nina Lemon, Daniel Eriksson, Gustav Backhans and László Sall Vesselényi.

Management system for Business continuity - ISO 22301

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Management system for Business continuity - ISO 22301 Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

ISO 22301 provides organizations, regardless of size, with support for systematic work in their continuity planning. The standard helps your organization with plans and work to reduce the likelihood, respond to, and not least how to recover after disruptions when they occur.

Purpose/Benefit:

Continuity planning is about ensuring that the business can continue to function even in the event of serious disruptions – such as cyberattacks, fires, natural disasters, or attacks. It is a more comprehensive and long-term effort than traditional disaster preparedness, focusing on maintaining IT systems and other critical functions without interruption.

If your organization has high demands on availability and operational reliability from customers, suppliers, or other stakeholders, ISO 22301 is a standard worth looking into.

With a certified management system according to ISO 22301, you ensure that your organization's continuity work follows an established standard and verifies it at the same time to suppliers, customers, and other stakeholders. It strengthens the trust of your stakeholders and creates a clear structure for how you manage risks and disruptions.

The certification serves as proof that you are working with continuous improvements in continuity – and the annual audit helps you develop both efficiency and resilience over time.

In a society where threats and vulnerabilities are increasing, the need for continuity planning becomes increasingly important. Even if you hope that crises never occur, ISO 22301 provides a clear path for how you can prepare – and stand strong when the unexpected happens.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

See the description of RISE certification process for management systems.

Function control of mechanically ventilated floors, walls and other mechanically ventilated constructions

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Mechanically ventilated gaps and constructions – function control Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Used to create moisture-proof constructions and to stop emissions from reaching the indoor environment. We work on evaluating the function of these constructions in connection with damage investigations, inspections and quality assurance during new installation, verification of system solutions in connection with certification and follow-ups.

Purpose/Benefit:

The purpose of a function control can be, for example, inventory / function mapping of installations or follow-up control of certified systems to assess the system's function. Function testing can also be a subset of damage investigation of buildings with moisture problems.

The functional test of the mechanically ventilated design ensures that the system works in the intended way and that moisture and emissions from underlying construction do not spread to the indoor environment.

A functional test can be performed at different stages:

  1. During construction to ensure that the installation is carried out correctly and give the installer a chance to verify that the system is airtight before the flooring / surface layer is completed so that any leaks can be corrected as early as possible.

  2. During the use phase to verify that the installation works as it should and has not been compromised by changes in general ventilation, refurbishing of adjacent building parts, dirt or other operational disturbance.
Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The accredited SP methods 1630-1634 cover a range of test methods for evaluating the function in mechanically ventilated gaps, which include, for example, control of airflow direction, pressure difference between the ventilated gap and the indoor environment, airtightness and tracer gas measurement to study air movements.

In addition to these measurements, an indication measurement of the airflow in the exhaust air duct and pressure drop over the building envelope is normally included. When monitoring the certified systems, an assessment is also made of the installed system's compliance with the design documentation.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Results from the functional test are presented in a report.

The social challenge that the project focuses on is a growing polarization in the public sphere. This challenge has been clearly highlighted by the Swedish Government Official Reports on democracy, and polarization between groups is referred to as a special risk factor for democracy.

The project is expected to result in deeper knowledge of the challenges, needs, markets and a network of users and stakeholders for the next innovation step. Effects in the long term, after a step 3 project, are expected to be that media will be able to offer safe discussion tools for conflict-ridden topics and that more readers, from more groups in society, participate in discussions across lines of conflict and via media actors' platforms.

The project has four work packages: Media market analysis that deepens the knowledge of the media as an attractive arena for discussions, Needs analysis and user studies in collaboration with reader groups and other groups in civil society to increase understanding of the user's/reader's perspective, Idea workshop where early concepts are developed based on needs analysis and lastly a package for Planning for the next project.

Collaborating parties are RISE, Direktpress AB, Södertörns Högskola, Lindholmens Science Park and Ifrågasätt AB, consortium with expertise in  media, ICT, design, journalism and challenges related to online discussions.

Testbed PFAS

PFAS is a group of chemicals currently used in a large number of products around the world, such as waterproof clothing, electronics, food packaging, cosmetics, ski wax and impregnation products. PFAS has been used extensively in fire extinguishing foams at civilian and military airports, in municipal rescue services and in permanent fire extinguishing systems in industry. PFAS is in principle not degraded in nature and may adversely affect human and animal health.

To help solve the problems, RISE and the Swedish defence sector conducted a research project, Testbed PFAS. The project invited companies, innovators, researchers and others who wanted to test their solutions and products in a professional laboratory environment and at contaminated areas. The collaboration aimed to contribute to society's need for realistic, sustainable and cost-effective post-treatment techniques for PFAS contaminations, as well as to new long-term alternative fire extinguishing agents and extinguishing methods. The work is carried out in two tracks, LEGACY and FUTURE.

Within the Legacy track methods for post-treatment of contaminated water and ground were evaluated. In the Future track alternatives to substitute PFAS in fire extinguishing were evaluated to provide future PFAS-free firefighting.

The project started in 2020 and was run and financed by RISE, the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Material Administration and the Swedish Fortifications Agency.

LEGACY - Evaluations of removal of PFAS from water

  • Evaluations in lab scale for water:

    • Foam fractionation
    • Carbon-based technology (graphene)
    • Membranes combined with  reversed osmosis
    • Ion exchange
    • Cellulose-based adsorption
    • Electrically assisted flocculation combined with MAC (= magnetically activated carbon)
    • Supercritical water oxidation
    • Chemical addition (detergent) combined with ultrafilter

  • Evaluation in pilot scale for water: (Tullinge waterworks):

    • Carbon-based technology (graphene)
    • Membranes combined with  reversed osmosis
    • Ion exchange

  • Evaluation in pilot scale for water (The airfield of Ängelholm):

    • pretreatment and ion exchange
    • pretreatment and PFAS flocculant

  • Overall conclusions:
    • Selection of PFAS removal technologies depends on initial and goal concentrations of PFAS, other contaminants etc.
    • A combination of different techniques, a treatment train, has been shown to be successful. Optimization of the different treatment steps usually gives a more cost-effective solution.

FUTURE - evaluations of  PFAS-free extingushing agents

During two years, more than 100 extinguishing tests were conducted with PFAS-free extinguishing agents in the fire halls at RISE in Borås. The tests were conducted according to ICAO Level B. The tests showed that the PFAS-free extinguishing agents extinguish a liquid fire (e.g. a burning fuel) within the specified time. The results were used directly in practice by allowing the Air Force to decide to use a new extinguishing agent that does not contain PFAS. The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) was then tasked with procuring a PFAS-free extinguishing agent to be used in the new rescue vehicles (delivered at the end of 2022).

Safe Storage of Inflammable Goods in Retail

Safe Storage of Inflammable Goods in Ret
Fire safety cabinets may be placed freely within the retail premises. Sales occur via doors in the cabinet.

Retail outlets, from small shops to large department stores and supermarkets, sell products classified as inflammable goods. MSB, or the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, recommends fire safety cabinets as a means to improve safety and to meet legislational requirements on safety. At RISE we evaluate and certify such cabinets.

Because of the packaging material often being plastic, and plastic being unable to contain its inflammable contents at high temperatures, there may be dangerous consequences to not storing these goods properly. The results can turn out to be catastrophical due to high chances of rapid fire development.

Swedish regulations on the safe handling and storing of inflammable goods, state that this must be done in a satisfactorily safe way. In addition, the way these goods are handled may neither obstruct nor complicate evacuation or rescue efforts. One measure that can be taken to ensure that these conditions are met is to store inflammable goods seperately or in a special fire safety cabinet. Our unique testing method, i.e. SP Method 2369, is designed to evaluate these fire safety cabinets.

Fire safety cabinets can be used to prevent fire violently intensifying when reaching inflammable goods. SP Method 2369 evaluates the general construction of fire safety cabinets as well as their ability to resist both internal and external fires. Recently, the requirements related to external fire resistance have been updated to reflect the critical temperatures of aerosol cans. Specifically, in version 6 of SP Method 2369, the maximum allowable internal cabinet temperature has been reduced from 200ºC to 75ºC while the time duration has been increased for this test. As such, cabinets that meet version 6 of SP Method 2369 provide greater protection to your flammable goods than those that meet the requirements set out in earlier versions.

Fire safety cabinets that have been evaluated according to SP Method 2369 and meet the requirements of our certification conditions, i.e. SPCR 102, may be placed freely within retail premises. Certified cabinets carry our P-Mark and shall resist the spread of an internal fire as well as ensure that an external fire is not aggravated by the cabinet's flammable content. These P-Marked cabinets have notnly been evaluated by us but are also subject to repeating production control to ensure good quality.
