The project will analyze the event area's current and future freight transports and thereby gain an understanding of the type of freight, delivery points, freight volumes, vehicle movements, supplier structure and other influencing factors such as planned infrastructure projects that will lay the foundation for a future logistics solution. The project will also develop design principles for a first major logistics hub and list requirements for the digital platform and infrastructure for data sharing within the transport chain to ensure the possibility of efficient coordination. Presented logistics solutions are also evaluated to ensure potential for an efficient inflow and outflow of goods from the perspective of goods recipients and consignors, potential business models and potential for feasibility. The project will lead to a proposed common direction for a long-term fossil-free and sustainable digitized goods handling for the actors in this area. The project is also expected to lead to a pilot project where the proposed logistics solution is tested.

The introduction of autonomous, driverless vehicles in industrial environments holds great potential for improving transportation efficiency, safety, and reducing the industry's climate impact. The purpose of the previous project, In the Hub, was to explore and demonstrate how human operators can interact with these vehicles. However, for these solutions to be implemented in reality, a better understanding of the obstacles and challenges that must be overcome is required. In this extension of the project, several key perspectives related to "Technology, Products, and Processes", "Business Models", "Infrastructure", and "Policy and Regulation" were studied.

The goal was to develop a deeper understanding of the obstacles that need to be addressed, which creates better conditions for large-scale implementation projects and promotes faster deployment of autonomous vehicles in the industry. The project built upon a design concept from the In the Hub project. This concept is intended to support interactions with driverless trucks in mining environments. The results from the project was presented in an open report.

The project was funded by Vinnova. RISE served as the project leader and coordinator, Scania was the primary stakeholder in terms of requirements, and Boliden was a stakeholder.

Just-In-Demand logistics with Additive Manufacturing

3D-printning and Just-In-Demand logistik
Just-In-Demand Logistics

Solutions targeting the transport and logistic sector are today in most cases built on the assumption that goods movements are physical. But with additive manufacturing production can be moved closer to the customer and products, transport and warehousing digitalized to create a Just-In-Demand Logistics where demand replaces production forecasts.

Image: RISE Transport Digitalisation Framework consists of six levels of transport digitization and describes the transformation from a fully physical supply chain (Level 0) to a supply chain consisting of fully digitized production, warehousing and transport to the end-user (Level 5).
Image: Markus Eriksson

Need for sustainable and resillient supply chains

Today's supply chain with its many actors, global distribution and complexity makes it vulnerable to disruptions, difficult to optimize and reacts slowly to changes in demand. The corona pandemic, the obstruction of the Suez Canal and political conflicts are some examples of events that have led to major disruptions in the supply chain.

In addition to this, there is a need to make the supply chain:

  • Sustainable
  • Predicable
  • Transparant
  • Cost effective

Just-In-Demand, additive manufacturing and logistics

3D printing or additive manufacturing (AM) has been around for decades without major impact on transportation and logistics. The development of the AM technology today goes from being a tool for visualization and prototyping to industrial large-scale manufacturing of components and products. The shift of additive manufacturing towards large-scale industrial production is developing rapidly and the development enables not only new resource-efficient supply chains but also the development of new sustainable business models.

Some of the benefits that you can achive with Just-In-Demand Logistics are:

  • Optimized demand Management
  • Reduce production Costs
  • Reduced warehouse costs
  • Reduced inventory Costs
  • Reduce transportation
  • Increase product availability
  • Improved resilience
  • Improved sustainability
  • New business opportunities

6 levels of transport digitalization

RISE has identified 6 levels of transport digitalization with different characteristics and implications on the supply chain. A digitalization of transport propelled by AM does not only affect transports, which is the most significant logistics cost (58%), but also inventory (23%) and warehousing (11%); which jointly account for 92% of all logistics costs. Together with our research partners, RISE is exploring Just-In-Demand logistics where transports are digitized, production is localized and demand drives production volumes instead of forecasts.

RISE AM-Center
RISE has together with industry and academia created an Application Center for Additive Manufacturing that is available for all industries, companies and public actors who are interested in learning more about additive manufacturing. Here you will get help to test and evaluate different solutions and business models, which can give your organization strengthened competitiveness, new business opportunities and sustainability gains.

Do you want to join the development of this area of expertise or take part of the results of the research?

Together we can take on the following challenges:

  • Design of transport and logistics systems based on additive manufacturing
  • Work and planning in the implementation of Just-In-Demand Logistics
  • Improvement measures for better warehousing and delivery precision
  • Evaluation of alternative logistics processes
  • Transformation of your organization towards Just-In-Demand Logistics
  • Technology monitoring of the AM area and its impact on transport and logistics

Want to know more about Just-In-Demand Logistics

If you want to know more about how AM can affect transport, logistics and industrial manufacturing, don't hesitate to contact us and we can have a dialogue on the subject. Right now, we are looking for more partners to work with to develop this area.

If you want to read more about Just-In-Demand, you can download our White paper in the box on the right: "JID | Just-in-Demand Logistics".

The goal of the Research and Development (R&D) program was to be able to propose a regulatory framework that makes it possible to introduce longer and heavier vehicles on parts of the Swedish road network. The definition of HCT is that there are longer and / or heavier vehicle trains than the current regulations allow.

For the management of the program, there are a steering group that had four meetings per year where those responsible for each work package and other parties in CLOSER participate. There are 10 different work packages that are coordinated by different parties:

  • Infrastructure (Swedish Transport Administration)
  • A single set of regulations (Swedish Transport Agency)
  • Traffic Safety (VTI / SAFER)
  • Performed Based Standards (VTI)
  • International cooperation (CLOSER)
  • Follow-up research (KTH)
  • Access and monitoring (RISE)
  • Logistics and system effects (RISE)
  • Type vehicles (Volvo / Scania)
  • Demonstrators (Skogforsk)

In RISE's assignments regarded work package Access and monitoring, the goal was that with the help of data, for example from the IT systems used by connected vehicles, optimize the use of the infrastructure also known as "Intelligent access". The R&I assignment included: to report on steering group meetings at what had happened in the area (external monitoring), produce proposals for research assignments that need to be carried out, writing text for the HCT annual report and participating in conferences and presented papers.

The assignment also includeded, together with the program manager for HCT, responsibility for international contacts and coordinating with related work packages within the HCT program as well as related programs such as the Geofencing program. The client for the assignment is the Swedish Transport Administration and RISE has also engaged Wandel Consulting as a sub-consultant during this period. The work has bees divided between these parties in close collaboration with the client.

Future-proofing cargo transporation in newly built city districts

First / Last mile delivery
uninterrupted urban development

The project is a feasibility study on how cities can plan, and build, to meet future needs regarding deliveries to homes and businesses. This includes issues regarding the creation of a nice urban environment, while securing people's needs for deliveries and waste management.

Coordinator
Active
Mobility Urban development
8 month
Division: Division Digital Systems and Societal Transformation

A major challenge in sustainable urban development is to create a pleasant urban environment for people while also ensuring that there are safe systems for waste management and deliveries of goods and goods. Transports are required for the daily life of the inhabitants and for the activities of the companies, but they also take up space in the street space. They affect road safety, increase emissions and cause noise in the urban environment.

The problem linked to the city's transport needs is not new, several studies have been carried out since e-commerce began to gain momentum. Since then, the climate goals have been clarified and the discussion about the use of the street space has intensified, while e-commerce and home deliveries have further increased throughout the pandemic. To address the challenges surrounding these transports, a number of solutions are highlighted, such as hubs, drones, and delivery robots, electric cargo bikes, boxes (all with different advantages/disadvantages). However, there are risks that these will be introduced without investigating the impact on the city. The feasibility study applies a holistic perspective based on the city setting the requirements and the transport system as an enabler for a diversified urban environment with different types of businesses and residents. The aim of the project is to investigate whether, and how, various innovative solutions can help cities meet the challenges while achieving the ambitious climate goals. The project, therefore, covers all types of goods and flows (eg materials to/from businesses, waste, groceries, packages, mail, ready-made food, returns) for new districts based on needs and conditions.

RealHOPE: Hantering av proteinläkemedel

RealHOPE

Studier i verkliga miljöer

Fem arbetspaket

Projektresultat

Forskningsstudier inom RealHOPE

Under projektets gång genomfördes omfattande forskningsstudier. Resultaten är en viktig grund för utveckling av framtida läkemedel och riktlinjer som stärker patientsäkerheten.
