Our units of measurement - in step with the times?

Our units of measurement – in step with the times?

A presentation of the new SI definitions

Since ancient times, humans have measured different things and the units of measurement have been more or less regulated. A few years ago, it was time for the latest change, but why was it made and what does it mean today and in the future?

In this seminar, we will partly provide a background to today's measurement system, but above all give a motivation for and future perspectives on the definitions that today form the basis of our measurements, everyday as well as advanced.

The cost of your own booked digital lecture, about an hour long incl. question time/discussion, is 8 715 SEK regardless of how many you are. The lectures are also offered in English.

Can measurements be trusted?

Can the measurements be trusted?

Seminar on quality assurance of measurement results(ISO 17025)

Here is a brief introduction about quality assurance of measurement results with ISO 17025. How should you and your laboratory work to deliver reliable measurement results to customers? And for those who order measurements: how do the laboratories work to ensure that you can trust the measurements you order?

One way is to look at how you work from receiving an assignment, via the actual measurement and delivery, to how you follow up customer satisfaction. For all steps, you need to ensure that you have the right processes and skills. There is an established international "best practice" for how this can be done, and it is described in the ISO 17025 standard.

The cost of your own booked digital lecture, about an hour long incl. question time/discussion, is 8 715 SEK regardless of how many you are. The lectures are offered in English or Swedish.

Capillary rheometry – for rheological characterization of highly viscous materials such as polymer melts

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Capillary rheometer Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

A capillary rheometer is used to measure a material's flow properties at high shear rates. The results can be used for both material development and to predict a suitable processing window in extrusion, injection moulding, or fibre spinning.

Purpose/Benefit:

Capillary rheometry is relevant for anyone interested to evaluate and/or develop polymeric materials for processing in the melt or in high viscosity solution.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

In a capillary rheometer, the material is placed in a cylindrical chamber to be extruded through a smaller capillary, while measuring the inlet pressure. The temperature in the chamber can vary from room temperature to 300°C, and possible shear rates range from 0.1 s-1 to 100,000 s-1.

Our Netzsch Rosand RH10 rheometer has two parallel cylinders and is equipped with haul-off, so that besides viscosity, it can measure melt strength as a function of take-up speed.

Approximately 100 grams of material are required for a test.

The instrument is suitable for testing according to ISO 11443.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Report containing:

• Viscosity curves as a function of shear rate and temperature.

• Melt strength as a function of extrusion and collection speed.

A small amount of collected filament on a spool, during melt strength testing.

Development of filament and staple fibers

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Development of filament and staple fibers Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Man-made fibers produced using solution spinning are collected and processed as filament or staple fibers depending on the desired application. RISE has equipment and knowledge to develop these two types of fibers that can be further converted into yarns and threads.

Purpose/Benefit:

Solution spinning of fibers results in tows, in other words bundles of multiple fibers packed in the longitudinal direction. The number of fibers in the tow is determined by the number of capillaries in the spinnerets used for extrusion. The tow is processes throughout coagulation, washing, stretching, spin finish application, drying, where fibers stay packed together, as extruding single fibers is not economically feasible. Depending on the intended application, the tow can be processed as filament or staple fibers, suitable for yarn and thread manufacturing.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

We perform research trials aimed at the development of both filament and staple fibers.

Filament fibers

Filaments are continuous and unbroken fibers that can be used in their original form as they emerge from solution spinning or can be twisted to form yarns and threads. The number of fibers in filament yarn is determined by the number of spinneret capillaries employed during the dope extrusion.

Staple fibers

Filaments can be transformed into staple fibers using a cutting operation. Typically, crimping is also performed to aid in the yarn spinning process by creating interlocking points for the fibers to grip onto each other. Moreover, spin finish plays a crucial role in yarn spinning of staple fibers and thus requires careful optimization. When aiming for staple fibers, the number of spinneret capillaries used for extrusion is not restricted by the yarn thickness, allowing for solution spinning of very thick tow. The tow can be cut into staples and used for yarn spinning, with yarn thickness subsequently controlled through such operations as carding, drawing, roving, and ring or open-end spinning.

Characterization of fibers

We perform the following testing of fibers:

  • Mechanical testing (e.g. dry and wet tenacity).
  • Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS).
  • Degree of polymer orientation (birefringence).
  • Specific surface area (BET).
  • Crystallinity (CP/MAS NMR and SAXS/WAXS).
Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

We have knowledge and equipment to develop and optimize solution spinning processes to produce filament and staple fibers, yarns and threads. Deliverables may include optimized process parameters summarized in a report or actually produced fibers. Please contact us for more information.

Graphene-coated optical fibers for sensor applications

Graphene-coated optical fibers
Fiber optic (graphical)

Optical fiber coatings are essential for the performance and reliability of the optical fiber in application. In this project, RISE developed a nanocomposite coating using graphene oxide and polyimide, and validated its potential for extended temperature durability and enhanced performance in fiber sensor applications.

Optical fiber coatings are essential for the performance and reliability of the optical fiber in application. For most applications, standard coatings such as acrylates and polyimides are used, providing good protection against mechanical and chemical ambients. For high temperature applications, up to 300°C, polyimide coatings are industrial standard.

In this project, funded by the Swedish innovation program SIO Graphene, we developed methods to coat long lengths of optical fiber with graphene/polyimide nanocomposite (NC) coatings. Several properties of the as-coated fibers proved interesting for sensor applications, as validated in the project.

  • The NC coated fibers are (slightly) more robust against high temperature ageing in air, with the fiber strength retained longer than standard polyimide coated fibers.
  • The NC coating is electrically conductive (kOhms/cm) and can be used for heating the fiber.
  • The NC coated fibers show significantly less moisture-induced strain than standard polyimide coated fibers. This is particularly important for FBG-sensor applications.

The project has shown, for the first time, the production of long length optical fibers with polyimide coating enhanced by the integration of graphene and graphene oxide particles. Further exploration of this, and other nanocomposite coatings, is on-going at RISE. Reach out if you're interested in collaborating on this topic!

Are you sure about the measurement uncertainty?

Are you sure about the measurement uncertainty?

Despite the fact that no measurement is flawless, we often blindly trust our measurements. At this seminar, we focus on measurement uncertainty, a fundamental concept in measurement technology that is basically about being critical of our measured values.

Many factors affect measurements: the human factor, temperature, humidity, what we measure, what measuring instrument we use, and so on. But no matter how good the measuring instruments we use or how ideal the conditions are, there is no way to know that the measurement value we have received is completely true.

We talk about what factors affect measurements and how to think about the level of measurement uncertainty.
