The shipping industry is facing its biggest transition ever. International regulations have set out clear requirements: carbon dioxide emissions must be reduced by 75 per cent by 2050. The EU's emissions trading system puts a price on every tonne of carbon dioxide emitted, and emissions must be reduced by 40 per cent by 2030. This means that shipping companies, shipyards and ports must make crucial choices between alternative fuels, new technologies such as wind propulsion, and extensive investments in ships and land-based infrastructure. At the same time, the market demands cost-effective, sustainable solutions in the long term.

RISE can support you throughout this process with independent analysis, advanced technological infrastructure, simulation and proven methods. We help you to evaluate and optimise energy-saving solutions, including wind propulsion, alternative fuels, electrification and hydrodynamic design. Using simulations, model tests and risk analyses, we verify that your solutions are effective before you invest. We also contribute to the development of maritime logistics and sustainable ports as transport, energy and digital hubs for future freight transport.

Shipping: New technology and optimal design reduce energy usage

Stena Line’s new concept vessel Stena Futuro can reduce energy usage by 20 percent or more, combining existing technologies such as wing sails and air lubrication. RISE independently assessed the saving potential of the wing sails and helped with a study to confirm that the vessel fulfills certain requirements for stability and maneuverability in scenarios such as sudden wind shifts or quick course changes.

Energy-efficient and fossil-free – the shipping of the future

The Swedish shipping industry generates sales of just over SEK 85 billion, indirectly employs 100,000 people and transports more than 170 million tonnes of goods and 67 million passengers – every year. Now, international regulations require significantly reduced carbon dioxide emissions from shipping. Parallel to this, increasingly more suppliers and subcontractors are making increasingly explicit demands that any sea freight must be both environmentally friendly and economically viable. Can shipping be made fossil-free? And is society ready for the major transition shipping faces?

The project is working to develop both the design and control of wave energy systems, building on previous EU projects, IMPACT and VALID. The work includes modeling, predictive control, and verification in controlled test environments where performance and lifespan are evaluated.

RISE coordinates the project and leads the work on quality assurance, lifespan analysis, circular value chains, mechanical reliability, hydrodynamic modeling and communication. Together with Ocean Harvesting Technologies, VGA, NILU, Maynooth and Politecnico di Torino, new solutions are being developed and tested to reduce operational and maintenance costs, extend service intervals, and increase availability. Dry tests are conducted at the project’s partner organizations, with support from RISE in the analysis and evaluation of the results.

The project also explores opportunities to design the wave power-system for a circular economy. The potential to reduce resource consumption, extend service life, create circular resource flows and enhance ocean ecosystems through regenerative solutions is explored, using design methodologies and scenarios. In parallel, the project investigates how wave energy can generate value for different customer segments and key stakeholders. These are evaluated from several perspectives, including technical feasibility, environmental impact and business potential.

Through these efforts, INFINITY contributes to lowering the costs of wave power, increasing reliability, and strengthening the European development of sustainable marine energy.
