Timber construction and timber structures

Timber constructions
Timber building in CLT during construction

The construction of timber structures has increased significantly since 1994, when changes to European structural standards meant that buildings taller than two storeys could be constructed using timber. Since then, interest in this field has grown considerably, with more tall timber buildings as well as timber bridges and towers being built.

An increased use of renewable materials and an efficient building process will create a more sustainable built environment. RISE has for many years worked with this development in different areas and has extensive expertise and services in timber engineering. Our experts can help with different types of issues at all stages of the building process and with issues from many different types of actors such as municipalities, property owners, architects, designers, contractors and building system suppliers. The employees at RISE have worked in projects aimed at several types of wood structures such as:

  • Multi-storey buildings - with frame in CLT, glulam, LVL, I-joist or stud frame
  • Tall timber buildings, more than 16 floors
  • Extensions, vertical and horizontal
  • Halls and arenas
  • Timber bridges
  • Special structures such as towers, wind turbines, etcetera.

Competence is available regarding design, calculation, modelling, testing (in the laboratory and in the field), standards and Eurocode 5 as well as maintenance and health monitoring and assessment. Our experts can contribute expertise in a number of the technical issues that are common to wood structures such as:

  • Choice of building system
  • Statics, stability and strength
  • Vibration, sway and acoustics
  • Fire resistance
  • Moisture safety
  • Industrial construction
  • Standards

RISE has also participated in the writing of several manuals and best practice guides on timber engineering, CLT structures, glulam, timber bridges and fire safety of wood structures. These manuals and best practice guides can be bought at Svensk byggtjänst and in some cases downloaded at Svenskt Trä.

RISE also has access to several laboratories for testing timber structures such as mechanical and dynamic properties, acoustics, moisture and fire. RISE also participates in several networks in the area such as Wood City Sweden, Träcentrum Norr and the Center byggande och boende i trä, WoodRise Alliance and others. We also collaborate with a number of universities and institutes in Sweden and the world, which provides a good network.

Education

RISE offers a wide range of training courses related to construction and wood materials. Several of these are available via NEB Academy, including courses such as:

  • Timber on Top

Can hospitals be built out of wood?

Hospital made of wood

The idea of building hospitals out of wood arouses both curiosity and scepticism, but the Vinnova-funded project Health in Wood shows that there are great opportunities. In a groundbreaking collaboration between the timber construction and hospital construction sectors, experts have tested the limits of wood as a construction material in healthcare environments. The results challenge old ideas about how the hospitals of the future can be built.

“Almost no one has done this before, but daring to think about wood in a hospital environment opens up completely new possibilities,” says Magnus Falk, project manager at RISE.

Wood offers much more than just sustainability and aesthetic value; it can also change how we build and experience healthcare environments. Through prefabrication, wooden elements can be manufactured elsewhere, quickly assembled on site, and reused, saving both time and resources.

"The low weight of wood makes it possible to build on or expand buildings without extensive foundation work, while improving the working environment thanks to shorter construction times and simpler installations. Imagine wood in entrances, reception areas, or healthcare wards, perhaps combined with concrete or steel. The possibilities are endless," says Kirsi Jarnerö, researcher and project manager at RISE.

It's about breaking old habits. We have to realize that we can't keep doing what we've always done.

Fire is a key aspect

Fire safety is, of course, one of the most discussed issues in timber construction. Fire safety is particularly important in hospitals, as they house activities that include the care of inpatients and functions that are critical to society.

The project shows that current knowledge makes it possible to build safely, even in hospital environments. Beams and columns can be dimensioned to withstand fire, and prefabricated modules can incorporate proven fire solutions. The challenge lies more in “mental regulations” and recommendations regarding non-combustible materials than in the technology itself.

“Many people believe that wood is automatically a risk. But today we have good methods for both calculating and limiting the impact of fire. It's a matter of using the right type of construction, the right dimensions, and smart solutions,” says Alar Just, fire researcher at RISE.

Where wood works, and where it doesn't

Operating rooms, with their sensitive equipment and extremely high vibration requirements, still require hybrid solutions using steel and concrete. But what about intensive care rooms and regular wards? Here, wood can stand on its own – with column-beam frames, stud frames, or cross-laminated timber.

“We see enormous potential in patient rooms and prefabricated modules. It is possible to build quickly, efficiently, and sustainably, while meeting all functional requirements,” says Cristiana Caira, Centrum för vårdens arkitektur (CVA) at Chalmers University of Technology.

One step at a time

“The key conclusions of the project are that the knowledge is there. And that wooden building systems can save both costs and the climate. It’s about breaking old habits. We have to realize that we can’t continue doing what we’ve always done,” says Tomas Alsmarker at Svenskt Trä.

Kirsi Jarnerö concludes:

“We just need to take one step at a time. Don't think of everything in terms of wood, but rather the possibilities of wood in combination with other materials. It's perfect for complex and cramped hospital environments.”

About the project

Health in Wood is a Vinnova-funded project that started in May 2023 and ran for 26 months. The project was coordinated by RISE. Other project participants: CVA – Centrum för vårdens arkitektur, Region Västerbotten Fastighet, Södra, Moelven Modulbyggnad, Moelven Töreboda, Masonite Beams, AFRY, Sitowise Sverige, CF Möller Arkitekter, White Arkitekter, ByggDialog, Svenskt Trä and AcouWood.

RISE has broad and deep expertise in timber construction. Through technical innovations, modularization, and clear procurement requirements, we are strengthening timber's position as a future-proof material – adapted for both climate change and aesthetics.

Wood has great potential in construction, but it remains underutilized. For wood to be able to compete seriously with climate-impacting materials such as concrete and steel, a concerted effort is required: technological development, new regulations, and increased market acceptance. Circular solutions must be implemented as early as the design phase, with a focus on demountable and reusable components. Public procurement needs to set requirements for sustainability and circularity so that wood is prioritized in construction projects. At the same time, it is necessary to ensure quality and safety in wooden buildings with proven solutions for, for example, moisture, fire safety, and acoustics.

For wood to take its natural place in the building environments of the future, digital tools, skills development initiatives, and a greater understanding of the advantages of wood among architects, planners, and property owners are also required. Through collaboration between technology, design, and policy, new standards and hybrid solutions can be developed that make wood a flexible, attractive, and long-term sustainable material choice.

RISE expertise in wood construction and circular design

RISE has broad and deep expertise in wood construction. We work with advanced building systems, fire-safe solutions, and tested models for moisture and acoustics. Through our test and demonstration environments and research projects, we support the development of innovative, modular timber components that enable reuse and circular flows.

We also develop design tools and digital solutions for wood details, making it easier for architects and designers to use wood in creative and sustainable ways. We support municipalities and public actors in developing procurement requirements that promote the use of wood, and offer advice on how hybrid building systems can be combined for increased functionality and load-bearing capacity.

By spreading knowledge, educating, and inspiring—and by working actively with both policy and innovation—we are creating the conditions for a construction industry where wood plays a key role in the transition to a climate-neutral society.

By developing flexible building systems, digital tools, and market structures, we can promote the reuse and recycling of wood, which reduces climate impact and conserves resources.

Despite wood's great potential in circular construction and production chains, effective systems for reuse and recycling are still lacking. Buildings and wood products are often designed for single use, which leads to large amounts of waste and scrap. For the wood industry to become more sustainable, a transition is needed where products can be easily dismantled, renovated, and reused. This requires standardization, modular designs, and incentives that make reuse economically attractive.

Markets and logistics infrastructures for recycled wood products are in many cases insufficiently developed, which hinders circular flows. Quality assurance and certification systems are also needed to ensure that reused wood meets building and safety requirements. Education and skills development are crucial to changing the culture of the industry and increasing understanding of the value of reuse.

RISE expertise in reuse and circular design

RISE drives the development of technical solutions and processes that enable flexible and modular wood products with a long service life. We work with digital twins and BIM-based tools that facilitate efficient maintenance, renovation, and material traceability. Through our research efforts, we support the development of certification systems and market structures for recycled wood products.

We collaborate with industry and the public sector to develop incentives and policy instruments that promote reuse in construction projects. Through training programs and knowledge dissemination, RISE contributes to increasing competence in circular flows, quality assurance, and sustainability aspects in the wood industry.

With a holistic approach to technology, market, and policy, we are creating the conditions for a future where wood products are used to their full potential, buildings last longer, and the value of wood is utilized in a circular economy.
