NextGenProteins

In the global market, the demand for high quality protein for both food and feed is growing. Due to the growing world population, resource shortages and climate change, the demand for protein is becoming more difficult to meet.

Because of this high demand one of the more pressing issues of our time is to ensure a continuous and sustainable supply of proteins for both humans and animals. Alternative proteins supply chains should be developed according to the scientific principles of circular economy and life cycle assessment.

The NextGenProteins project focuses on the scale up and optimization of alternative proteins production. During the project the suitability of three different kinds alternative proteins (microalgae, insects and fungi (SCP)) as high-quality protein ingredients in feed and food products is assessed. Their inclusion in specific, targeted feed and food applications is explored and optimized, to meet customer needs and ensure consumer acceptance. During the project detailed life cycle assessment studies are conducted for different applications and raw materials as well as surveys on consumer acceptance.

The project will contribute to strengthening the food supply, sustainability, and self-sufficiency of EU protein production by demonstrating the suitability and economic viability of the next generation of proteins as part of the food and feed value chains; with less stress on natural resources and reduced environmental impact.

RISE's role in the project

RISE Processum's involvement focuses on scaling up and optimization of fungal protein production (called SCP: single cell protein) from underutilized forest biomass residues as well as on the downstream processes to meet industrial and regulatory requirements for feed applications. RISE Processum is also the work package leader for the production processes and the evaluation and optimization of functional and nutritional properties in the project.
