Outcome-Based Contracts for Medtech Solutions

New medtech solutions can help improve quality of life and make healthcare better and more efficient. But how can healthcare providers invest in new technologies when their benefits are difficult to assess in advance? Outcome-based contracts offer a way to create better conditions for adopting innovative medtech solutions.

Medtech innovations have significant potential to improve healthcare. However, bringing new solutions to market and implementing them in healthcare settings can be challenging.

One challenge is that municipalities and regional authorities may perceive a high level of risk when the effects, costs and benefits of new technologies have not yet been sufficiently verified.

The project will therefore test outcome-based contracts as a way of sharing risks between the public sector and companies when introducing medtech solutions.

Payment linked to results

Outcome-based contracts are a model in which payment is fully or partially linked to the results achieved. By establishing shared goals, distributing risks and developing methods for monitoring and evaluation, the model can create new opportunities for collaboration between healthcare providers and medtech suppliers.

Two pilot projects

Two pilot projects will be carried out in real-world healthcare or social care settings, matching medtech innovations with the needs of municipalities or regional authorities. For each pilot, performance indicators, measurement methods and payment models will be developed.

The results will be analysed in terms of both effectiveness and potential benefits for healthcare organisations, patients and society. The pilots will provide recommendations on how outcome-based contracts can be used to bring medtech innovations to market more effectively.

Medtech4Health

The project is carried out within Medtech4Health, a Swedish strategic innovation programme jointly funded by Vinnova, Formas and the Swedish Energy Agency.
