The project focuses on business models for end-of-life (EoL) electric vehicle (EV) batteries, with emphasis on enablers and barriers to circularity in the battery value chain.
Circular business models are typically classified as closed-loop or open-loop: closed-loop involves reuse within the same or similar actors in the value chain, while open-loop refers to repurposing batteries across different value chains and applications.
The project will investigate both business model archetypes through scenarios that vary in the distribution of ownership, risk, and value creation across the battery lifecycle. Key enablers of circularity include financial viability, regulatory approval, data access, and environmental factors, as identified by consortium stakeholders. The scenarios span one-off ownership transfers to second-life uses, fixed-term and performance-based leasing models, and service-based refurbishing where ownership remains upstream.
Based on these analyses, a decision-support framework will be developed to help actors in the EV battery value chain determine optimal timing and terms for engaging with EoL battery packs, supporting improved circularity.
The consortium is led by RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology, Rebattex, and SBR Sveriges Bilåtervinnares Riksförbund.
