Escape Room-Inspired Method Lab for Complex Societal Challenges

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Escape Room-Inspired Method Lab for Complex Societal Challenges Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

RISE offers an escape room–inspired method lab for organizations seeking to address complex societal challenges in an engaging and action-driven way. Through gamified system innovation, we strengthen learning, collaboration, and organizational capacity for action in areas such as AI, resilience, climate, and social sustainability.

Purpose/Benefit:

Complex societal challenges require more than traditional meetings and linear project plans. They demand a shared understanding of systems, trade-offs, and driving forces — along with a structure that enables organizations to move from analysis to action.

The purpose of the method lab is to:

  • Create shared understanding around a complex issue

  • Make system dependencies, risks, and development opportunities visible

  • Activate participants as co-creators rather than passive listeners

  • Build organizational capacity and resilience

The overall aim is to strengthen the organization’s ability to navigate uncertainty, manage change, and develop sustainable solutions across organizational boundaries.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The method lab is designed in close collaboration with the client, based on the specific societal challenge, target group, and level of ambition. It can focus on areas such as AI and digitalization, regional resilience, climate adaptation, skills supply, public safety, or other strategic priorities.

At its core is an escape room–inspired format where participants work with thematically adapted cases and assignments. Through a structured and stepwise process — with defined roles, time frames, and clear missions — participants explore the current situation, risks, and trade-offs before shifting toward system redesign and solution development.

The method can be combined with:

  • System mapping and analysis of drivers and interdependencies

  • Realization and implementation of strategies and roadmaps

  • Scenario development and future exploration

  • Reflective dialogue and norm-critical analysis

  • Prototyping and testing of new ways of working

  • Practical use of relevant tools (such as AI tools, policy tools, or simulation exercises)

The format can be delivered as a standalone method lab or as part of a longer development or transformation process. It may serve as a starting point for change, a deepening component within an ongoing initiative, or a catalyst in strategic decision-making. The work is carried out at the client’s premises, in regional contexts, or at RISE facilities.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Deliverables are defined in dialogue with the client and may include:

  • A summary of identified risks, system linkages, and development areas

  • A visualized system map or current-state analysis

  • Prioritized action proposals at individual, organizational, and system levels

  • Recommendations for redesign of processes, governance, or ways of working

  • Presentation and decision support material for management or steering groups

  • Recommendations for continued implementation and follow-up

The method lab may also be followed by in-depth analysis, pilot projects, strategic process support, research initiatives, or innovation projects depending on needs and ambition level.

The objective of the deliverable is not only documentation, but to create clear direction and sustained momentum in the organization’s development journey.

Simplified climate declaration for components according to FKG's methodology for climate data sheets

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Simplified climate declaration for components Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

You can now provide your company and customers with a competitive edge in a simple and cost-effective manner while contributing to sustainable transport. This method leverages established material and process data to report the climate impact of both current and future production articles.

Purpose/Benefit:

The purpose of the climate data sheet is to strengthen the competitiveness of environmentally conscious subcontractors and their customers by reporting the climate impact of an existing or future item that one intends to offer. The customer can thus make a conscious choice to increase the durability of their product. The reporting of the article's climate impact provides increased customer value, which benefits the suppliers who can attach a Climate Data Sheet to their articles.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The method is based on the company's climate impact from a simplified life cycle perspective (cradle to gate). Initial training and support is required for the development of the company and component specific calculation model.

The climate data sheet cannot be equated with a complete LCA or EPD, but the work that forms the basis of the report provides a very good insight and knowledge about the climate impact of the company and the articles from cradle to gate (from the origin of the raw material to delivery at the company's gate).

Process for producing climate data sheets:

  1. Workshop 1 Method introduction

The company gains basic knowledge about sustainability in general, and climate calculations specifically, in parallel with competence-developing exercises. A review takes place of the method and included tools and basis for producing climate data sheets.

  1. Workshop 2 Calculating climate impact

This workshop provides detailed and comprehensive knowledge about the methods for calculating environmental impact. It covers how to obtain data, the importance of identifying and using accurate data, and the steps involved in calculating your climate footprint. Following the workshop, the company will undertake its own efforts to identify and collect the necessary data for the climate data sheet.

  1. Company visit

This step is advantageously combined with Workshop 2. During this phase, RISE expert visits the supplier to examine processes and material flows, gaining a deeper understanding of the business. The visit primarily focuses on the company’s efforts to identify and collect data necessary for completing the inventory template, while also exploring opportunities to improve internal process flows. Following the visit, RISE expert collaborates with the company to finalise a model used in climate data calculations. As a result, the company will have a customised tool and model to calculate and report the climate impact of various products in the form of a climate data sheet.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The climate data sheet reports the climate impact in CO2eq (carbon dioxide equivalents). The calculations are based on energy, material, logistics and production data from the previous year. The calculation method can thus be used both for articles that are in production and for future articles where the product's material and manufacturing process are known. The method of producing a Climate Data Sheet follows a standardised process. After training and initial support, your staff can produce a Climate Data Sheet for any of your companys' articles.

If desired, a third-party validation of the method can be performed, which further increases the customer value of the Climate Data Sheet.

Energy exercise on hybrid threats and how they can affect the lokal energy system and its operators

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Crisis exercise: Local strength at power outages Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Today's security situation with cyber threats, malign information and sabotage, sometimes with an unclear sender and unknown purpose, increases demand on local energy companies and municipalities. RISE offers an exercise concept based on the local energy system and its operators, aiming to strengthen energy preparedness in the local energy system.

Purpose/Benefit:

The exercise will increase knowledge and awareness regarding the risks of hybrid threats. The content will be adjusted according to the participants

Enhances the ability to handle crisis situations and stimulates cooperation across operational functions to improve energy readiness and resilience of critical societal functions.

During the exercise, the group can identify future improvement areas.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The exercise is carried out over the course of a day. The basic version of the exercise will involve representatives from one municipality and the energy comapnies operating in this municipality. From the municipality, it can be safety coordinators, representatives from municipal management, rescue services and/or communicators who participate, about 3-5 people. It is desirable that both electricity grid companies and electricity producers participate with 3-5 people each. Regional grid owner, county administrative board and other civil defence actors can also participate in the exercise.

The exercise will be adapted to the actual municipality and can also be adapted for implementation with two or more municipalities together.

An introduction about hybrid threats and what these can cause in a crisis situation will be held in the beginning. The exercise groups is then faced with a scenario that leads to a series of challanges to reflect and collaborate on, and asks for communication between the groups.

The groups are both separated and mixed so that experience is exchanged between different organisations. All participants gather during the day for joint reviews and presentations of the group discussions.

RISE puts together an exercise plan, prepares and leads the exercise.

Workshop Digitalisation DIY - tools and inspiration for Digitalisation

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Workshop Digitalisation DIY Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Unsure on how to take the next step or which technology areas to invest in? In this workshop we offer both inspiration and concrete tools on how to develop services, products or a way of working with the support of digitalisation and new technologies.

The workshop suits those who have just begun their digitalisationjourney as well as those who want to have a deeper knowledge in the field.

Purpose/Benefit:

The concept of digitalisation can sometimes feel fuzzy and difficult to grasp. People talk about how important it is, but not always about why or how you can use it. In the DigiDIY workshop we lower the thresholds for working with digitalisation. Here you get both inspiration and concrete methods for developing your business (for example a product, service or a way of working) with the help of digitalisation and new technologies.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The workshop begins with an inspiring lecture about some of the possibilities with new technology and suggestions on how to face the challenges.

In the next step, you work in smaller groups with guidance from us at RISE. Based on information about digital technologies and their "superpowers", you generate ideas together on how to develop your offers or way of working. You also get to try different tools on how to develop and evaluate your ideas.

The workshop is about 3 hours long and takes place either at our premises in Piteå, Västerås or at another given location. We suggest that the participants have different functions within the company/organisation in order to share different perspectives and knowledge.

Since the workshop aims to lower the thresholds for digitisation, no prior knowledge in the field is required.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):
  • Inspiration - opportunities and challenges with digitalisation and new technologies
  • Method for developing you're business (for example a product, service or way of working) using digitalisation and new technology as a tool

Workshop The Experience - Practical introduction to user centered methods for product and service development

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Workshop The Experience Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

The workshop gives you concrete and inspiring tools to analyze the user's journey - before, during and after interaction with your product or service.

Purpose/Benefit:

People are different; who we are, what we need and what we experience. When developing a service or product it´s valuable to see from several perspectives. Do users encounter obstacles at any stage? Can we supplement the offer to meet more needs or enhance the experience?

For who?

The workshop suits companies, municipalities and organizations who want practical knowledge about how products and services can be developed based on the needs and experiences of the users (for example, customers, visitors or residents).

By understanding the user's experience we increase the possibility to create an attractive and accessible product, service or location.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

With support from our supervisors from RISE you will map your selected product/service step-by-step during the workshop. By looking at the offer from the users' perspective the strengths and opportunities for development often become more distinct.

The workshop takes about 3 hours and is held either at our premises in Piteå or at another given location. It is an advantage if the participants have different functions within the company/organization in order to share different perspectives and knowledge. The workshop is suitable for 3-20 people, but the more people participate, the more rewarding discussions and insights can be.

The workshop is based on short theoretical reviews and practical work with a case that the company itself has chosen to focus on.

With the support of RISE supervisors and methods, the following is developed:

  • A so called Persona that describes a representative of the users of the service/product
  • A Scenario that describes a sequence of an event
  • An Experience map of the user's interaction with the service/product
  • Identification of interactions that can be improved

Methods for further development and idea generation are also presented.

The workshop will give participants knowledge of the method, new insights about their own case and equipp them to be able to use the knowledge on their own, for example to look at the same service but from another user's perspective or to develop the weaknesses identified.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The participants gain a basic understanding of interaction design and user-driven design, including methods to:

  • understand the user
  • chart the user's experience and needs
  • work norm-critical
  • develop new ideas
