• Process optimisation

The goal is that through this integration the industry can shift from reactive quality control to proactive process optimization, resulting in more sustainable and resilient production processes, with energy savings, less waste, and improved product quality. We  explore how the use of advanced machine learning methods, automation, new sensor technologies, together with real-time and offline sample analysis can drive towards more efficient and sustainable production systems across several industries.

Example: During the autumn 2025  we start a collaboration with Oatly, ORKLA, Höganäs, Incipientus, RHI Magnesia, and Lantmännen with the goal of  enhancing processing industry efficiency and insights with AI and smart sensors.

• Predictive Maintenance

The goal of predictive maintenance is to identify imminent failures and intervene sufficiently early before they happen. Machine learning is the right tool when the understanding of fundamental principles of the system is not comprehensive, and the system is sufficiently complex that developing an accurate model is prohibitively expensive. Another benefit of machine learning tools is the generalizability of these models to similar subsystems without fully understanding the design details.

RISE has extensive experience in working together with companies with real challenges. We have deep domain knowledge and solid competence in AI, allowing AI to work in practice. We develop customized AI tools for all stages of the maintenance chain:

The partnership runs on an annual basis and renews every 12 months. 

Upon registration, your organization will be required to sign the partnership’s letter of intent. Participation requires commitment and engagement from two designated contact persons per organization. 

Optimized recipe for good fracture sealing in rock mass to ensure that environmental and maximal water ingress requirements are met.

The purpose of the development of cement-based grouting recipes in the laboratory is to ensure a well-functioning product on site during tunnel construction and prior to subsequent preliminary testing. A recipe developed by RISE and the client is checked and refined on site for optimal grouting in existing rock fracture systems before and during tunnel construction. The set of laboratory and field quality-assured testings are conducted as smoothly as possible, so that that the environmental requirements for water ingress during construction are met.

An optimized recipe, developed in a laboratory, contributes to good  grouting performance and after final field optimization a minimum amount of water flow is achieved that is added to the tunnel per unit of time, and often is expressed as a requirement per unit of time in number of liters or droplets per unit of time.

An optimized grout also acts as additional stabilization of fractured rock sections, where the cement-based grout contributes to traditional  rock mass stabilization  with rock bolts.

The following standards are taken into account when developing recipes: EN 14497, EN ISO 10414-1, EN ISO 10414-1, SS-EN ISO 17892-12:2018

The approach is based either on calibration of the existing recipe  in a laboratory conditions or developing composition from scratch, which can be refined in field conditions later.

The service also involves quality control of existing grout that is already used during ongoing grouting on site.

The customer is offered a quality-assured product from start to finish, where a report of variation in quality is reported.

Delivery is made according to agreement with the customer.

Recipes are developed in the RISE laboratory. Field tests are carried out with the client on site before pre-testing.

Reusing windows poses both technical and economic challenges, but the environmental benefits can be significant. By overcoming these challenges, the construction and real estate sector can contribute to a more sustainable future. One option may be to renovate the window in whole or in part. RISE offers quality assessment and action proposals.

Inventory
A stock assessment involves evaluating and documenting the current condition and function of windows. Representative windows are selected to provide an overview of the entire stock.

Mold and Rot Investigation
A laboratory investigation in the microbiology lab involves taking samples from suspected areas and analyzing them to identify the presence of mold and rot. This may include microscopy and other techniques to determine the type and extent of the damage.

Chemical contamination, e.g. PCBs
Sealants and other building materials may contain chemicals such as PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls). A chemical content investigation involves taking samples and analyzing them to determine the presence and concentration of these substances

Rain and Airtightness
Determining rain and air tightness involves testing the ability of windows to resist water ingress and air leakage.

Status determination of insulating glass
Assessment of the residual function of insulating glass involves evaluating the insulating ability of the glass and any damage or deterioration. This can include measuring the U-value and inspecting the tightness and condition of the glass. Testing the gas filling level. Investigation of the consumption of the desiccant contained in the spacer strips.

Thermal transmittance coefficient U-value
Determining the current U-value means measuring how well a window insulates heat and cold. A lower U-value indicates better insulation and reduced heat loss

Acoustic properties
If there are requirements for acoustic properties, this means evaluating the windows' ability to attenuate sound and reduce noise.

Proposed measures
Based on the above investigations and assessments, proposals for measures are prepared to improve the condition and function of the building's windows. This may include repairs, replacement of materials and other improvement measures.

RISE probably has Sweden's largest accreditation from Swedac regarding window testing.

A completed assignment is usually reported in a written report.

Resource mapping is a process aimed at identifying and analyzing the materials and resources present in existing buildings, before renovation or demolition. It is important to use these resources efficiently and sustainably, which can help reduce environmental impact and promote a circular economy.

In resource mapping, the focus is often on the parts of the building with the longest estimated lifespan and large volume components. By taking good care of these resources, significant CO2 savings can be made. This aligns with the resource hierarchy for the construction and civil engineering sector and taxonomy. To determine whether a material or product is interesting to preserve, reuse, or recycle, RISE assesses several aspects:

• Environmental and health aspects
• Possibility for disassembly
• Economic potential
• Potential for climate savings
• Quantity, properties, and homogeneity of the material group
• Condition and state
• Quality assurance, and testing

When conducting a resource mapping, we follow a process with activities that together provide a good overview of the building and the potential for reuse or recycling of its building products. The methodology is based on the process steps: preliminary work, material inventory, quality assurance, data analysis, and report, as shown in the figure above.

To assess whether the products or materials should be reused or recycled, an environmental and economic evaluation is carried out in terms of CO2 per m² and SEK per ton.

• A life cycle analysis (LCA) is used to assess a product's or service's environmental impact throughout its life cycle. This includes calculating global warming potential (GWP), expressed in carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e). Data from databases are used to calculate stored CO2. 
• Based on the quantities, the economic value of the building's materials and components is calculated. This helps to understand the economic potential in addition to the environmental benefits that can be achieved through the reuse or recycling of materials.

Report as agreed, with the following suggested content:

• Compilation of preliminary work describing the building's structure and history
• Results from material inventory and environmental and health sampling, corresponding to reuse inventory and meeting requirements according to the PBL control plan
• Compilation of the building's materials:
  • Stored CO2: The amount of carbon dioxide bound in the material, stated in kg CO2 equivalents per square meter.
  • Economy: The economic value of the material, stated in SEK/ton.
  • Resources: The amount of material, stated in tons.
• Quality assessment of materials, including test results

RISE offers the Universal Design service in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The service is a process-driven approach that is based on seeing the needs of actors with regard to different forms of accessibility within the framework of the community building process.

Universal design (Design for All Approach) is a way to add a clearer perspective of inclusion in the community building process. The aim is that owners of needs with different individual requirements should be involved as early as possible, through the entire process via design solutions in the form of services and products that meet the needs. Universal design is as much about social and experience-based inclusion as physical, it must not only be possible to enter and use an environment, it must also be experienced as safe and inviting. Co-creative initiatives with the support of universal design do not only apply to people with disabilities, but can also involve other groups in need of different support functions, e.g. groups in particularly vulnerable situations or positions.

RISE can support authorities (municipalities, regions, etc.) and private actors (centre owners, property owners and managers, etc.) in their work with accessibility issues. Above all, it is about highlighting universal challenge opportunities that can be attributed to the following factors:

• Organization – Management functions with division of responsibility and authority 
• Collaboration – Collaboration between parties within an organization and with external actors 
• Governance – Spaces for action based on horizontal forms of cooperation between actors. 
• Planning – Integration of universal design into the planning process via governing documents

RISE's role is partly to act as a guide in process control and various specialist areas, and partly to make evidence-based, qualitative analyzes and design solutions. RISE offers expertise in carbon footprint calculation according to the EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542.

Under the Battery Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2023/1542), there is a requirement that all electric vehicle batteries, rechargeable industrial batteries, and batteries for light transport vehicles placed on the EU market must have a carbon footprint calculated according to the guidelines set by the EU. At RISE, we have many years of expertise in life cycle assessments and carbon footprint calculations for batteries, and we can assist you in calculating the carbon footprint of your battery.

In our calculations, we use the guidelines for calculating the carbon footprint of batteries developed by the European Commission in a delegated act (currently a draft). The calculations cover the life cycle stages of raw materials, manufacturing, distribution, as well as end-of-life management and recycling. During the calculations, we collaborate with the client and preferably also with the battery manufacturer, if they are not the same entity. We will need relevant data such as materials used, product composition, manufacturing processes, and battery performance.

Please note that the final calculation rules have not yet been established, but RISE is monitoring the development.

Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 12 July 2023 concerning batteries and waste batteries, amending Directive 2008/98/EC and Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 and repealing Directive 2006/66/EC

The structural design and stability of the structure shall not be affected by the system or the design of the structure itself, such as the frame, foundation, roof or walls. RISE may make any or all of the following interpretations that may be necessary to prevent damage or to ensure that no damage occurs.

RISE's moisture experts provide the client with data on the condition of the building structures in terms of moisture and the indoor environment, which can form the basis of proposed measures or causes of damage in the event of a dispute, for example.

Benefit

Harmful moisture is rarely or never visible to the eyes, and moisture damage can be costly to repair. It can also adversely affect the health of occupants or the physical properties of materials, with potentially serious consequences. It is therefore important that the right research is carried out and that it is carried out by experts.

A damp proof building solution is a sustainable building structure. With our knowledge, experience and close teamwork, we can carry out the job in the best possible way. The work/investigation may be carried out on site in the building in question, or it may be carried out in our modern laboratory environment. Some of the damage investigation work can also be carried out in the office, for example, reviewing, assessing and compiling drawings. It is not uncommon for the investigation to need to be supplemented by relevant sampling, measurement and analysis of the building material in the laboratory or in the field.

As a client you will receives a final report containing relevant data and documentation according to the purpose and scope of the assignment.
