RISE is Notified Body (NB) for Europe and a Telecommunication Certification Body (TCB) for USA.

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Notified body for EU and TCB for US Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

RISE is a Notified Body (NB) for Europe and a Telecommunication Certification Body (TCB) for the USA.

Purpose/Benefit:

For the EU, manufacturers can obtain an EC type examination Certificate as proof of an independent review of their technical documentation for their CE marking of the product.

In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) defines the regulations for placing electrical products on the market. Here, the requirements are not in standards issued by standardization organizations, but instead they are enrolled in the CFR (Code of Federal Regulations). The part that deals with EMC and radio requirements is called Title 47 Telecommunication.

The FCC has two approval procedures, Certification and Suppliers Declaration of Conformity (SDoC). For most types of radio transmitters, Certification applies with type approval via a Telecommunication Certification Body (TCB). Certification requires that a test report is issued by an FCC approved laboratory (FCC recognized laboratory). This means that accreditation according to IEC 17025 is not sufficient but is a prerequisite for being recognized.

For products that do not contain a radio transmitter, SDoC applies except for “exempted devices”. FCC only accepts test reports where the measurements have been performed according to FCC recognized measurement methods (ANSI standards) with US mains voltage (ex 120VAC / 60Hz). RISE is accredited and FCC recognized for the measurements required as a basis for SDoC.

In conjunction with measurements for the United States, the requirements for Canada can also be covered, since in most cases the same measurement methods also apply in Canada. RISE is accredited and "recognized" for several Canadian standards. The authority in Canada that handles the requirements for EMC and radio is called Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED).

RISE is, as the only organization in Sweden, appointed by the FCC to a TCB. This means that we can perform the certification required by the FCC for radio transmitters and obtain the grant of equipment authorization required to place the product on the US market.

RISE can also help with equivalent certification for Canada.

Notified Body - The manufacturer receives an independent review showing that the technical documentation of the product meets the essential requirements of the relevant Directive.

TCB - Manufacturer obtains a product certification, which is a prerequisite for placing the product on the market in the US.

Calibration of measuring tapes at The National Laboratory

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Calibration of measuring tapes at The National Laboratory Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

The National Laboratory for Length and Dimensional Metrology offers calibration of measuring tapes, dipping tapes and PI tapes.

Purpose/Benefit:

The National Laboratories are responsible for maintaining the national reference standards for each measurement quantity and spreading metrological competence and traceability to industry and society at large. The national reference standards are the highest level of traceability in Sweden.

A calibration performed at a national laboratory fulfils all typical traceability and accreditation requirements that commonly exist in industry and society at large.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

We perform calibration of most kinds of measuring tapes on the market. Our routine calibration at 20 °C includes ten measuring points evenly distributed over the tape. Off course we can calibrate other points on customer requests. We can calibrate each dm up to 5 m and after that every half meter. We calibrate each meter on dipping tapes and ullage level gauges as standard.

Measuring tapes can be made of different materials for example steel and nylon and with different tension forces, normally 50 N. The graduation can start 100 mm in (Type A), from the start of the hook (Type B) or from the hook (Type C). It’s very important that measuring tape with tension force have the same force at use as during the calibration, otherwise the corrections won’t be correct. If the measuring tape is used at other temperature or measuring force than marked at the tape, the length measurements should be corrected.

PI tapes are calibrated due to a different method and other measuring points than usual measuring tapes. This will be described in the certificate.

Measuring tapes are made in different tolerance classes, mainly due to SS 641112, SS 641113 and STAFS 2016:9.

The tolerance grade specifies the maximum allowed deviation on the specified type of measuring tape, but doesn’t say anything about the individual tape. The only way to find out the deviation on a specific tape is by calibration. The calibration is performed without any consideration regarding tolerance class.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The calibration results are reported in a digital calibration certificate in Swedish or English which states that the calibration was performed at a national laboratory.

BS 6807 -Fire testing of mattresses in UK

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): BS 6807 - Fire testing of mattresses in UK Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

BS 6807:2006 - Method of test for assessment of ignitability of mattresses, upholstered bed bases with flaming types of primary and secondary sources of ignition.

Purpose/Benefit:

The standard is used to assess the ignitability of mattresses, upholstered divans and upholstered bed bases, when subjected to different ignition sources of gas flames and small wooden cribs. The thermal output of the ignition sources shall approximate that of a burning match up to four sheets of a full-size newspaper.

The filling used in domestic mattresses, mattress pads, divans and bed bases (low hazard) are also subjected to Government Regulation the “Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988” with amendments.

In the United Kingdom, all non-domestic mattresses, mattress pads, divans and bed bases, are required to be classified by the hazard categories - low, medium, high and very high risk. Depending on the use of the mattress, mattress pad, divan or bed base, different test standards are referred to by BS 7177.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The tests are performed in a test cabinet with a calibrated air flow. The test specimen is located on top of a steel rig. The ignition sources are located on top of the mattress and on a specified distance below the mattress (the distance varies with the ignition source). There are six different ignition sources, numbered 2-7. ignition sources 2-3 are gas flames and ignition sources 4-7 are wooden cribs (the higher number the larger gas flame/crib).

During the gas flame tests the test assembly is not allowed to smoulder for more than 15 minutes from the start of the test (60 minutes for wooden cribs). The test assembly is not allowed to show evidence of charring more than 100 mm in any horizontal direction from the nearest part of the original position of the ignition source. The gas flames are removed after 40 seconds (ignition source 2) or 70 seconds (ignition source 3). No flaming is allowed to continue for more than 120 seconds after removal of the burner tube. No flaming is allowed to continue for more than 10 minutes after start of the test with ignition source 4-5 (13 minutes with ignition source 6-7).

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

A test report, in Swedish or English, is delivered with the test results after testing.

Calibration of gauge blocks at The National Laboratory

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Calibration of gauge blocks at The National Laboratory Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

The National Laboratory for Length and Dimensional Metrology offers interferometric and mechanical calibration of gauge blocks.

Gauge blocks are the universal standards that makes it possible to transfer the definition of the metre to a solid standard. We offer calibration of gauge blocks from 0,1 mm -1000 mm, made by steel, tungsten carbide or ceramic materials within three different uncertainty levels. Interferometrical calibration of gauge blocks is our most accurate measuring method, and a direct application of the definition of the central length of a gauge block. The gauge block is wrung to the plane surface of an auxiliary plate and the central length is defined as the perpendicular distance between the surface of the platen and the middle point of the gauge block's top surface. To determine this distance we are using several, different wave lengths of light.

Interferometrical measurements (method “A”) are used when the best accuracy is needed. One typical application is gauge blocks used as standards for mechanical calibration of other gauge blocks. Interferometrical calibration requires very high-quality gauge blocks. The gauge blocks should fulfil grade K according to EN ISO 3650 and have burr free measuring faces.

When the accuracy needed is slightly lower, the gauge block can be measured by mechanical comparison. This method is based on comparison between a standard gauge block and a customer gauge block. We offer two accuracy levels, methods B and C. We are able to calibrate the central length and the length at the four corners for all metric standard lengths from 0,1- 500 mm. That makes it possible to determine the variation in length. For gauge blocks above 500 mm to 1000 mm only the central length is measured.

Method B is intended mainly for gauge blocks used in a laboratory, where high accuracy is needed. Mostly gauge blocks that fulfil Grade 0 or 1, according to EN ISO 3650.

Method C is mostly used for gauge blocks used in an industrial environment, for example to calibrate handheld measuring tools. Mostly gauge blocks that fulfil Grade 1 or 2, according to EN ISO 3650.
