Analysis of phthalates according to ISO 14389 och OEKO-TEX

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Analysis of phthalates and plasticizers in textiles and plastics Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

It is important that the textiles on the market are free of harmful and regulated substances. Chemical analysis is a way to gain control over the products' chemical content. Plasticizers are used to make a stiff plastic, e.g. PVC, soft and flexible.

Purpose/Benefit:

Society and consumers set high demands on companies and their products. The legislation also means that you as an actor must have complete information and control over the chemicals in your product. It is especially important with products for children and goods with skin contact, such as clothes and accessories.
Plasticizers are used to make a stiff plastic, e.g. PVC, soft and flexible. Phthalates, such as DEHP, have been a common plasticizer, but today there are other environmentally better alternatives.

We help you interpret chemical legal requirements and restrictions that apply to goods made of textile materials and plastics and that are linked to e.g. REACH and POPs. We suggest what analyses you need to do based on legal requirements, but also other specifications such as eco-labels or procurement requirements,
Phthalates are limited in many different product groups but are still used in certain segments, although many have also switched to other alternatives. Contact us if you want to analyze alternative plasticizers.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Textiles - Determination of the phthalate content - Tetrahydrofuran method (ISO 14389:2014)

OEKO-TEX analytical method (method contains more than 20 phthalates and plasticizers, both regulated, SVHC and listed in OEKO-TEX)

Chemical and phase analysis with micro X-ray fluorescence and powder X

Micro X-ray fluorescence and X-ray diffr
Elemental map obtained by µXRF on a concrete sample

RISE is equipped with micro X-ray fluorescence (µXRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), two powerful techniques to characterise materials.

Micro X-ray fluorescence:

At RISE we use the M4 Tornado from Bruker. µXRF allowed us to obtain information (qualitative and semi quantitative) on the composition of a sample but also the elemental distribution.
The X-ray beam is highly focused, up to 20 µm in diameter, which gives excellent spatial resolution. The composition at any point can be determined, and the spatial distribution can be mapped when flat surface is analysed. Large samples can be placed in the chamber: up to 150 x 200 mm samples with a maximum height 120 mm and a maximum weight of 5 kg. The technology is optimized for analysis speed and a sample can be mapped within an hour (depending on its size and the resolution we want to obtain).

The vacuum chamber enables the detection of light elements although element with a molar mass lower than the one of sodium (e.g., carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, …) cannot be detected.

For elemental mapping a flat and levelled surface will give the best results. This preparation can be done by RISE.
Point analysis can be realised on a variety of samples: solids, powder, irregularly shaped objects, soils, …

Elemental mapping is very interesting to understand the changes in composition in a material due to for example its environment. For example, a μ-XRF can map substances onto a cross-sectional surface of concrete, which gives us the opportunity to follow the changes in the distribution of substances over the surface. This may be the key to elucidating some underlying mechanisms for the degradation of concrete.
The technology is of interest for many research areas, such as materials science (metals, cement and concrete, semiconductors, …), environmental science (sediment and soil, recycled materials, contamination analysis, …), electronics (printed circuit boards, chips.), Surface treatments, geology and archaeology.

X-ray diffraction:

We use a MiniFlex from Rigaku. XRD is mainly used for the qualitative analysis of the different crystalline phases that can compose a material (for example minerals or inorganic compounds). The characterisation of unknown solids is important in many fields, such as geology, environmental science, material science, engineering and biology.
XRD is a rapid technique (approx. 30 min) for the identification of a material.

A minimal sample preparation is required: the sample is only finely powdered and homogenized. This can be done at RISE.

Purpose/Benefit:

Precious metals jewelry /article weighing 1 gram or more shall be marked with a mark that indicates the fineness content. In addition, either a hallmark from our Assay office (the “kattfot”) or a registered responsibility mark is required.

  • We perform impartial analysis of the precious metal content. Control mark guarantees that the item keeps the indicated fineness content now and forever.
  • With “Kattfoten”, we, as an accredited independent notified body, take responsibility for the specified fineness being correct.

With the responsibility mark, without “Kattfot”, the manufacturer itself takes full responsibility for the article keeping the indicated fineness content.

This, of course, places special demands on both you who manufactures jewelry and you as a consumer and buyer of jewelry, baptism gifts and more.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

In the Assay Office we analyze the precious metal gold to secure the fineness for manufacturers, sellers, importers, private persons and more. We also implement analyzes of raw materials, semi-finished products and scrap containing gold.

Identification of elements that are present in different types of samples, and determination of approximate concentrations are often of great interest in many fields. Examples include identification of problems, solution of problems, damage investigations, screening of products, process and product Control, and identification of materials.

Purpose/Benefit:

This type of chemical characterisation is performed with the purpose of receiving a fast and efficient survey of the element composition of a sample, i.e. to identify what elements that are present and to estimate their concentrations.

In many cases the sample composition is totally unknown, and there is almost no information about the samples.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The choice of analytical techniques is based on the client issue and the sample type.

Typically, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is used in combination with some other chemical analysis techniques that will give an almost complete survey of the element composition. XRF generates results fast and efficiently, and can be used for totally unknown samples.

In addition to identification of the elements that are present, estimation of concentrations of the elements will also be possible (so called semi-quantitative evaluation).

The work include both accredited and non-accredited testing methods. The scope of accreditation is available upon request – please feel free to contact us for more information.
