Purpose
Surface texture is sometimes called surface topography or surface roughness. These are terms meaning the geometrical shape of a surface at small scales, often in the micro or nano meter range. Surface texture is important for the function and performance of components in many cases. Changes in processing often show as changes in the surface texture of processed components.
With control over the surface texture it is possible to secure that specifications are well defined and whether specifications are met. It also is possible to adjust manufacturing processes and to find specifications that ensure well-functioning surfaces.
Method
Non-contacting optical measurement using interferometry, confocal microscopy or focus variation depending on suitability. Also, the possibility for indirect measurement by using replica.
Measured areas can be up to several centimeters and the resolution can be down to parts of a micrometer laterally and nanometers vertically.
