Calibration of pyranometer at The National Laboratory

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Calibration of pyranometer at The National Laboratory Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

The National Laboratory for Photometry and Radiometry offers calibration of pyranometers.

Purpose/Benefit:

The national laboratories are responsible for maintaining the national reference standards for each measurement quantity and  spreading metrological competens and traceability to industry and society at large. The national reference standards are the highest level of traceability in Sweden.

A calibration performed at a national laboratory fullfils all typical traceability and accreditation requirements that commonly exist in industry and society at large.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The calibration is performed indoors against a Hg(Xe)-lamp in comparison with a reference pyranometer. The method requires that the device under test and the reference match each other in make and model as closely as possible which puts some restraints on which types of pyranometers the method can be applied to. For example, photo diode pyranometers cannot be calibrated with this method. The calibration is performed at 500 W/m2. The calibration can be performed year round.

A calibration can also be performed directly against the sun as a source in compariton with a reference pyrheliometer. This method does not have the same restrictions on matching models. It does require a sunny and cloudless day during a time of year when the sun is high enough in the sky.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The calibration results are reported in a digital calibration certificate in Swedish or English which states that the calibration was performed at a national laboratory.

Calibration of capacitance

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Calibration of capacitance Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

The national Laboratory for electrical quantities offer calibration of capacitance standards (capacitance and dissipation factor) and different kinds of instruments. For example, electrometers, calibrators, and LCR-meters.

Purpose/Benefit:

RISE's calibration at the National Laboratory for electrical quantities is available to customers who require the best possible accuracy in their calibration or have requirements which involves development of new calibration methods. Our customers are found among industry, research institutes, and calibration companies. The national reference standards at the National Laboratory have the highest level of accuracy in Sweden. The traceability to the realisation of the unit is always ensured.

Calibration at a National Laboratory meets all the typical requirements for traceability and accreditation commonly found in industry and society at large.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The calibration resources for capacitance at low voltages (≤ 100 V) covers the interval 100 fF – 1 mF. The most commonly used method for calibration of capacitance standards in the interval 1 nF – 10 μF is substitution measurements where the object is compared to a known standard with the same nominal value. Such capacitance calibrations are carried out with an LCR-meter or a capacitance bridge. Calibrations can be performed at frequencies up to 10 kHz (in special cases higher). The measurement uncertainty is at best 10 μF/F at 1 kHz.

In cases where a reduced measurement uncertainty is required, or when the substitution method is not applicable, calibration of capacitance standards can instead be carried out with a manual capacitance bridge. The most common frequency at which the calibration is carried out is 1 kHz, but calibrations can also be performed at other frequencies, up to 10 kHz (sometimes higher). The measurement uncertainty at 1 kHz is at best 3 μF/F with a dissipation factor of 3∙10-6.

Measurement bridges and LCR-meters are calibrated by measurements against secondary capacitance standards.

Calibrations of high voltage capacitors can be performed up to 300 kV (for more information see the National Laboratory for high voltage and high currents)

Other types of measurements can also be performed, for example, measurements of temperature coefficients.

The measurement uncertainty given for a calibration depends, in addition to the calibration equipment’s performance, also on the calibration object’s performance (stability, temperature coefficient, voltage dependence and so on). In most cases, a preliminary estimate of the measurement uncertainty can be given from experience before the calibration.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Delivery upon agreement with customer. The results of the calibration are reported in a calibration certificate.

When becoming a client you will also get access to our customer website for calibration, where you may also place orders.

Calibration of electrical resistance

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Calibration of electrical resistance Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

The National Laboratory for electrical quantities offers calibration of resistance standards and various types of other instruments, such as calibrators, multimeters, LCR meters and certain types of temperature measuring instruments.

Purpose/Benefit:

RISE's calibration at the National Laboratory for electrical quantities is available to customers who require the best possible accuracy in their calibration or have requirements which involves development of new calibration methods. Our customers are found among industry, research institutes, and calibration companies. Our national standards have the highest level of accuracy in Sweden. The traceability to the realisation of the unit is always ensured.

Calibration at a National Laboratory meets all the requirements for traceability and accreditation commonly found in industry and society at large.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The calibration resources for resistance are in the range of 1 μΩ - 10 PΩ and calibration is usually carried out using resistance bridges or TΩ meters. Most types of instruments are calibrated against secondary resistance standards. The measurement uncertainty is at best 0.25 μΩ / Ω in these cases.

For resistance standards in the range 1 Ω - 10 kΩ, we can in some cases offer direct calibration against our primary resistance standards with our cryogenic current comparator (CCC). The measurement uncertainty will be 0.05 μΩ / Ω at best.

Calibration of AC resistance can be offered in the range 1 Ω - 100 MΩ for frequencies up to 10 kHz. The calibration is done with an ac-resistance bridge or LCR meter, so-called substitution measurement. The LCR meters have in turn been calibrated by measuring against secondary ac resistance standards. The measurement uncertainty is at best 5 μΩ / Ω.

Other types of measurements are also performed, such as determination of temperature coefficient and resistivity.

The measurement uncertainty given for a calibration depends, in addition to the calibration equipment's performance, also on the calibration object's performance (stability, temperature coefficient, voltage dependence and so on). In most cases, a preliminary estimate of the measurement uncertainty can be given from experience before the calibration.

For more information on our resistance standards and the realisation of the resistance unit, see our expertise page on electrical resistance.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Delivery upon agreement with customer. The results of the calibration are reported in a calibration certificate.

Calibration of anemometers

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Calibration of anemometers Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

We perform accredited calibration of anemometers in a range from 0.1 m/s to 35 m/s.

Purpose/Benefit:

There are several reasons to regularly calibrate your measuring instruments, with one being to increase the accuracy of the measurements taken. In addition, some applications require that the measuring instruments used are calibrated in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Examples of various types of anemometers that we routinely calibrate are hot-wire anemometers, pitot tube static anemometers and rotating vane anemometers. We also calibrate cup anemometers and ultrasonic anemometers but to a lesser extent.

We use two types of equipment when we calibrate anemometers, a wheel for low air velocities (0.1-4 m/s) and a wind tunnel for higher air velocities (0.3 - 35 m/s).

The lower measuring range setup is usually used to calibrate small sensors and hot-wire anemometers which are used to measure small air movements in rooms, draft. The sensor is calibrated upright in a horizontal airflow. We can also offer calibration in a vertical air flow, with horizontal sensor, to see the effect of self-convection from the sensor.

In the setup with the wind tunnel, air velocity sensors used in e.g. air ducts and ventilation systems are common. We can offer accredited calibration up to 35 m/s for most types of sensors, but for larger types of rotating vane anemometers accreditation is limited to a maximum of 10 m/s.

The calibration is performed at several selected measuring points within the sensor's measuring range. The measuring points can be specified by the customer when ordering.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The calibration results are delivered in a digital calibration certificate accredited in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025. The certificate can be written in either English or Swedish.

Optical calibration with international reference standards OCL (IR3s) from an authorized laboratory

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Optical reference standards OCL (IR3) Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Optical reference standards - why? To keep your equipment properly calibrated in order to get reliable measurement results. This applies to both optical properties of fluorescent and non-fluorescent pulp and paper products as well as other materials.

Purpose/Benefit:

The optical properties of paper and board such as reflectance, whiteness, brightness and opacity are important selling points for paper manufacturers. It is therefore essential to measure and report these values in a precise and standardized way. Proper instrument calibration is essential for accurate measurement. Although methods for measuring optical properties may vary for different applications and from country to country, proper calibration is essential for everyone.

IR3 reference standards

OCL (Optical Calibration Laboratory) can offer both fluorescent and non-fluorescent IR3 reference standards.

  • Non-fluorescent IR3 standards:
    • For calibration of the reflectance factors in your instrument.
  • Fluorescent IR3 standards:
    • For adjusting the UV content of the instrument's illuminant.
    • The non-fluorescent IR3 standards for calibrating the reflectance factors of your instrument are also needed before the UV adjustment step.

For your needs

Within the two main types of fluorescent and non-fluorescent, there are a number of variants that meet the requirements for different instruments. Contact us or read more about reference standards in the product description.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Our standards

Each reference standard consists of an opaque stack of very stable paper. The reported values apply only to the top, blank sheet in the stack. It is very important that the standards are handled and stored properly, see our general instructions (link to the right).

It is strongly recommended to use working standards, such as control tiles, for regular checks of the calibration of your instrument. In case of deviation, use the working standard for instrument calibration. The IR3 standard should only be used to check or calibrate the working standard.

The ISO calibration chain

ISO has established a calibration hierarchy in which there are three types of laboratories - standardization laboratories, authorized laboratories and test laboratories. The standardization laboratories calibrate their instruments towards an abstractly defined standard, "perfect reflecting diffuser", also called IR1. The standards manufactured at the standardization laboratories are called IR2 standards. IR2 standards are used by the authorized laboratories to calibrate their instruments.

At RISE, we use IR2 standards from the National Research Council (NRC) in Ottawa, which is the only, leading standardization laboratory. The standards manufactured by OCL at RISE, which is an authorized laboratory, are thus called IR3 standards, and are used by the test laboratories to calibrate their instruments.

Authorization and accreditation

The Optical Calibration Laboratory (OCL) is approved by ISO / TC6 to handle optical reference instruments according to ISO 4094 and to issue non-fluorescent reference standards (IR3) in accordance with ISO 2469 and ISO 22754. We also have the authority to issue fluorescent IR3 standards for adjustment of the UV content of the lighting in the instrument according to ISO 2470-1 and ISO 11475. Links to the ISO standards are to the right.

OCL is one of the five ISO / TC6 approved laboratories in the world. We have more than 35 years of experience in calibration services for the pulp and paper industry worldwide. A link to our authorization certificate is on the right.

Swedac accreditation

OCL is accredited by the Board of Accreditation and Technical Control, Swedac, in accordance with EN ISO 17025. Swedac is a Swedish authority and national accreditation body for Sweden. See our certificate of accreditation in the link to the right.
