Transformation Partnership

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Transformation Partnership Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Transformation Partnerships, where RISE curates the synergic work of complex constellations of partners, gathered around a societal challenge, aimed at engaging in Transforming Practices to enable systemic change.

Purpose/Benefit:

Introduction to the Service

Nowadays, we observe a shift in the way the work of most companies and institutions is carried out. This shift is happening, due, for instance, to the digital transformation or the proliferation of AI, where relationships and agendas are becoming more and more interconnected and therefore complex. Actors that could work independently only a few years ago, today feel the need to connect and collaborate. Different agendas have to relate: social, economic, political agendas, as well as the civil society’s agenda; all of them have to also connect to the higher goal of environmental sustainability.

If we think about urban planning, for instance, and the possibility of having sensing and acting cities (so called smart cities), we immediately see how it is now necessary that all actors involved in this system are not working separately, but collaborate to produce transformations where all points of view are taken into account.

We are at the presence of systemic challenges that need to be acted upon with an approach that leads to Systemic Change.

This is a relatively new way of working and all sectors are dedicated to increasing and boosting the innovation and transformation capacities, related to Systemic Change.

At RISE, systemic transformation is in our DNA, being the Swedish multidisciplinary research institute with the governmental mandate of catalyzing collaborations. We have matured methodologies and tools that effectively contribute to increase capacities of Systemic Change through Transformation Partnerships.

Purpose

A transformation partnership is built upon design principles that stimulate new ways of thinking, acting, collaborating, planning and implementing transformations.

It is meant both for the challenges that our partners face within their organisation or in their external activities, in particular in multi-stakeholders situations.

The mentoring supports the opening up of the challenge in a holistic way, by taking into account the broader societal context, and it provides ways to map and collaboratively make sense of it.

Transformation Partnerships offers tools and methods to:

  • navigate complex challenges;
  • define the foundational values that will drive the transformation;
  • support and boost multi-stakeholder collaboration across organisations;
  • go forward with a shared value-based vision and concrete action plans to implement a roadmap for systemic change.

Benefits

In a Transformation Partnership, RISE will coach and support you in a specific transformation process, you will acquire methods and tools that will empower you towards:

  1. Be(coming) Change: learning to have the right mindset towards change, which implies attitudes like staying curious and embracing risk and complexity; being able to unpack end expand on the values that the transformation will empower.
  2. Work Change: making sense of your challenge, understanding each other in the stakeholder constellation that is operating the transformation; exploring the challenge from different perspectives (micro, meso, macro, chrono); creating future scenarios, through exploring experiential proposals; being able to regularly reflect and assess the process and implement the findings in the following iterations.
  3. Realise Change: creating concrete action plans to kickstart change/innovation/new pilot.

Thanks to the iterative and explorative characteristics of the tools used, you will be at ease in  exploring unknown territories, move beyond the standard, and truly touch upon new perspectives that can be used when a durable transformation is necessary.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The tools and methods that are offered through the transformation partnerships, have been developed at RISE, in close collaboration with Eindhoven University of Technology. They are a result of a year long applied research in Transforming Practices and Systemic Change. They capitalise on dozens of applications’ experiences across a broad number of sectors. They are grounded on design research and they promote a prototype-driven approach.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Depending on the partners’ requests and operating context, Transformation Partnerships consist out of a specifically designed set-up of workshops. During these sessions, mentors from RISE curate the process and coach the group of people through it.

The workshops are designed upon request, to fit the purpose and the motivation of your  organisation. Depending on the chosen duration of the collaboration, the process can result in a final report, specifying an action plan; it can have a follow-up to discuss the finding, reflect and assess the process.

A possible longer collaboration with RISE can also be a result of this service.

RISE Substitution Tool

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Identification of alternatives to unwanted chemicals Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

RISE offers support in the identification of relevant alternatives to substitute unwanted chemicals and substances in products and processes. RISE has developed an efficient internal substitution tool to easily screen a broad database of substances and select the most promising ones to solve complex substitution challenges.

Purpose/Benefit:

Many products and processes use today chemicals that need to be replaced due to their negative environmental impact, toxic properties or upcoming regulations. The substitution of a chemical is a complex process that need to account for the physical and chemical properties of the substance to be replaced as well as other critical parameters such as toxicology, environmental impact, cost or even colour and odour.

RISE has developed a unique internal substitution tool to easily identify potential substitutes to toxic chemicals. The tool capitalizes on the Hansen solubility parameters of substances, which provide an indication on the likeness between different substances with respect to their chemical structure and physical properties. The tool has been extended to include information on toxicity and hazard data, environmental effects, eye irritation, skin permeation, prices and odors. The combination of all these parameters in a single search allows for a facile screening of a broad range of substances.

By using the tool, highly relevant alternatives can easily be identified, which limits the number of trials to be performed and reduces the cost of the substitution process. The risk of performing regrettable substitution is greatly lowered.

The substitution tool has been proven to be very efficient for substitution of solvents but could also be used for the substitution of, for example, plasticizers.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The work always starts with discussion with the client to identify all the parameters that need to be accounted for in the search for alternatives for the specific product or process.  After identification of the most critical parameters to account for, a search is made by RISE in a broad database of substances using the substitution tool to identify promising candidates. The list is further refined according to secondary criteria and a list of potential alternatives is generated.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The client receives a list of potential alternatives to substitute the targeted toxic substance.

Delivery time:

The delivery time depends on the complexity of the challenge to be solved.

Geometry simulation of tolerance requirements

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Geometry simulation of tolerance requirements Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Through geometry simulation we can predict and visualize variation for a better end product. Analyzing variation and tolerance outcomes through efficient geometry simulation creates the right conditions for optimizing product requirements and manufacturing costs.

Purpose/Benefit:

The way to more robust product and production concepts goes through better methods for predicting and visualizing variation in product and process concepts.

Central to geometry hedging is to create robust geometry concepts that can withstand the production variation that can be expected. A first step is to analyze the robustness of the concept by means of stability analysis, and to analyze the conditions depending on the positioning systems (the reference system) for components.

With the help of statistical variation analysis, the expected variation in critical end dimensions can then be simulated and analyzed. A contribution analysis can also be performed, it shows a ranked list of the points and tolerances that contribute to variation in each critical measure.

Variation analysis

By means of statistical variation analysis, expected variation in critical final dimensions can be simulated and analyzed. The analysis of variance is based on Monte Carlo simulation, a well-known technique for statistical simulation of stochastic processes.

Offering

RISE offers tolerance and robustness simulations with the intention of better verifying the product and production concept taking into account expected tolerances and manufacturing variation.

Modelling, simulation, and optimization of casting processes

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Modelling, simulation, and optimization of casting processes Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Modelling and optimization are crucial tools during the design phase to ensure optimal design and function of the product. RISE has extensive experience of modelling, simulation, and optimization of casting processes.

Purpose/Benefit:

Casting simulations are primarily used for optimizing the casting configuration with respect to mould filling and solidification with the aim of minimizing defects typically occurring during the casting process ensuring thus time- and cost-effective product development.

The model, or the theoretical calculations, are based on a mathematical model of the physical processes resulting in a set of differential governing equations which are solved by appropriate numerical methods. These range from fluid flow problem during the mould filling to heat-conduction during the solidification phase, as well as the solid mechanics of the solidified body. These are then utilized for detailed analysis of the complete process ensuring an optimal design of product. These numerical studies are most often conducted using commercial codes specifically designed for each task containing necessary data such as material-data of the alloy and the mould. It also helps the casting company determining the most appropriate casting design parameter configurations. By optimization of the gating system regarding the type, size, and location, it is possible to gain deeper insight into quantities which are usually not know beforehand, e.g., velocities, permeability of the mould and how these could affect defects such as porosities and shrinkage.

Services offered:

  • Topology optimization, FEA & Heat-transfer & Thermomechanical analysis.
  • Casting simulations
  • Cast ability analysis & process optimization, CAD-CAM-CAE support

An environmental product declaration is a way of communicating the environmental properties of products that can be used on all kinds of goods and services. Environmental product declarations in accordance with ISO 14025 are based on life cycle assessment, LCA.

Purpose/Benefit:

RISE can help your company to efficient environmental communication. We have experience of both self-declared environmental claims, so-called type II declarations, and certified environmental product declarations of type III within the framework of ISO 14025.

An environmental product declaration based on life cycle assessment is a very good way of meeting customers' and authorities' demands for credible, easily understandable and comparable environmental information, for example in connection with public procurement. The underlying life cycle assessment is also an excellent basis for further improving the product's environmental properties.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

An environmental product declaration according to ISO 14025 is always based on a life cycle assessment, LCA, performed according to the product category rules that apply to the product. If there are no product category rules, we will develop them in conjunction with our doing the LCA. However, we recommend that you pre-certify the EPD before the product category rules are completed, as approval can take a long time.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Before the environmental product declaration  can be registered by the International EPD® system or other EPD program, it must be verified by a third independent party. This verification is not normally included in the delivery but must be ordered from a third party. RISE may also perform such third-party review, though not if we do LCA and EPD.
