Efficient Evaluation of Antifoam Solutions in the Process Industry

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Efficient Evaluation of Antifoam Solutions in the Process Industry Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

By utilizing the customer's filtrate or other process fluids, we can efficiently evaluate various antifoam solutions without the need for extensive and costly full-scale trials.

Purpose/Benefit:

By providing customized tests, we can assess how well different antifoam solutions perform in the customer's specific process environment without the need for extensive investments or disruption to the existing production process.

These evaluations allow us to identify and recommend the most effective antifoam solutions that meet the customer's needs and process requirements. By conducting tests using the customer's own fluids, we can ensure that the results are relevant and applicable to their operations.

By avoiding the need for full-scale trials, we can save both time and resources for our customers while guaranteeing that they receive high-quality and cost-effective antifoam solutions. This empowers our customers to make informed decisions about antifoaming in their production processes and ensures smooth and efficient operations.

In the process industry, both process chemistry and raw materials vary, meaning that an antifoam that is effective in one system may be ineffective in another. Therefore, each system requires individual optimization based on its specific conditions and requirements.

For paper mills and other industries, it is common to have an established supplier of antifoam, and changing suppliers often involves extensive analysis and testing. Reasons for considering a change may vary, such as the possibility of a more efficient or cost-effective product, issues with foam that the current product cannot handle, or the current product requiring excessively high and costly dosage levels.

By analyzing the current process filtrates, we can determine the causes of complex foaming issues and identify suitable solutions. It is also possible to evaluate different antifoams and study the behavior of silicone in antifoams. It is important that the silicone does not adhere or clump with resins and other contaminants, which can lead to production issues in both paper mills and printing facilities. Having a thorough understanding of these processes is crucial to ensuring smooth and efficient operations.

Lab-scale rod coating for quick screening trials

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Lab-scale rod coating for quick screening trials Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Traditionally, rod coating has been used to test surface adhesives and coatings for spreads on graphic paper. But the method has also proven to be valuable for testing coating of new chemical solutions. The method has therefore had a renaissance and is now used in several new application experiments, including nanocellulose.

Purpose/Benefit:

The effects of coating with viscose, nanocellulose and lye on different test surfaces are some examples of coating solutions that can be used. These solutions are applied to the sample using a rod. Different rods are available, ranging from smooth to grooved for different amounts of toppings and solutions. After coating, the sample is dried with, for example, IR dryer, but several drying methods are available. More layers can be applied or the sample can be tested directly in lab.

Various surface adhesives and creams can be boiled and prepared in jet boilers. Samples in A4 format are usually used for coating, but even smaller formats can be coated. Stick coating is a fast method that does not require large amounts of material. After coating, there are also many different options for testing the coated surface, such as contact angle, surface roughness and friction. A good complement to other analyzes of the surface are Cobb 60 and Cobb Unger. The strength properties of the test as well as air permeability and air permeability are examples of other interesting tests that can be performed.

The quality of the wood chips is critical to the production of pulp, and at RISE we offer several different analyses to ensure the quality of the wood chips. By carefully examining and evaluating various properties, we can identify any defects or deviations that may affect the production process and the quality of the resulting pulp.

Purpose/Benefit:

We analyse several key parameters in wood chips, including bark content, moisture content, bulk density and dimensions, to ensure high quality pulp production:

  • Bark content: Affects pulp quality by introducing impurities; measurement indicates how well the chips have been cleaned.
  • Bulk Density: Reflects the packing density of the chips and affects flowability and absorption of cooking chemicals.
  • Size and thickness: Consistent size distribution and optimum thickness are essential for effective impregnation, chemical absorption and uniform cooking quality.

Together, these parameters optimise the process and improve pulp quality and uniformity.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Analysis of colophony in products with skin contact

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Analysis of colophony in products with skin contact Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Colophony, also referred to as rosin, is a term used to describe a collection of resin acids that are naturally present in the extractives of pine, spruce, and larch trees. Given that pine oil is a common byproduct of the wood distillation process, colophony is often found in significant quantities in pine oil.

Purpose/Benefit:

It is acknowledged that traces of colophony may be present in pulp and, consequently, may be found in various products. However, it is generally accepted that this does not usually cause any problems. However, a Danish study of 2,000 eczema patients found that 3.7% had an allergy from skin contact with colophony. The greatest risk of exposure to these substances is associated with prolonged contact, typically occurring in cases of adhesives utilised in plasters, bandages, cosmetic products, and sanitary items. This allergy has the potential to persist throughout a person's lifetime.

In the context of regulatory frameworks pertaining to hygiene and cosmetic products, there has been an observed increase in the demand for analysis in order to ascertain colophony levels. At RISE, we specialise in the measurement of colophony content, with the objective of ensuring compliance with safety standards and minimising the risk of allergic reactions.

Colophony is a naturally occurring substance that is found in a variety of products, including cosmetics, adhesives, paints, soaps, and industrial chemicals. It is sometimes referred to by different names, such as rosin, resin oil, and tall oil resin. It is imperative to be cognizant of these synonyms to ensure precise identification and analysis.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The analysis of colophony levels in mass is achieved through the utilisation of gas chromatography for the purpose of examining resin acids. In certain instances, three particular resin acids – abietic acid, dehydroabietic acid, and 7-oxodehydroabietic acid – are employed as markers for colophony. In order to conduct this analysis, a minimum of 20 grams of mass is required.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

RISE is responsible for the production of a report, the content of which is presented in Excel format, together with relevant images and diagrams. The data has been compiled in accordance with recognised methods, incorporating a measurement uncertainty assessment to ensure the reliability of the results. The report encompasses all pertinent parameters, accompanied by comprehensive comments and elucidations to facilitate enhanced comprehension.

Microbiological Purity of Products in Food Contact

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Microbiological Purity of Products in Food Contact Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Microorganisms in liquids, paper, and cardboard can cause staining and contamination, impacting both the production process and the final product. In food-related manufacturing, it is particularly important to monitor and control this to ensure high standards of quality and hygiene.

Purpose/Benefit:

In the manufacturing of paper and cardboard intended for food contact, it is crucial to carefully monitor the bacterial content of the final product. High bacterial levels can not only impact food safety but also cause issues in the production process. Bacteria can contribute to operational disruptions by forming biofilms in pipelines and on machine components, leading to production downtime and increased maintenance costs. Moreover, microbial growth can result in discoloration or odors in the finished material, which in turn may lead to customer complaints and quality deviations.

To control bacterial levels, standardized testing methods are used to provide an indication of the microbial load in the paper or packaging. While these methods do not always give a complete picture of the specific microorganisms present, they serve as essential tools for ensuring compliance with hygiene standards. Regular monitoring and proper maintenance of production equipment are also crucial measures to minimize the risk of bacterial contamination and to ensure that paper and cardboard products are safe for food contact.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The method ISO8784-1:2014 do not say everything, we know e.g. not which ones grow, but the method is standardized and works well as a control to use even in mills.
